Advice for the 'raw' recruit
Greetings my fellow TGers,
Now, I'm not one for suggesting servers outside of the TG servers, but I figured I'd bend that rule slightly for this post. Please note this is for those who have NEVER played the BF series before. Lately, I have found myself going over to the Rank Restricted servers late at night after the TG servers go quiet. For those of you who don't know, the Rank Restricted servers will only let people rank 10 and lower to play on that server. This is good place to get some practice time in without a bunch of Majors with hella unlocks killing you all the time. Plus, these servers usually have less people on them (do to a lower maximum player limit..around 30 on most RR servers) Just last night, I went to a RR server to try my hand at the Commander's seat and got 2 Silver and 1 Gold star in three straight games as CO. (Though I MUST warn you that teamwork is usually quite lacking on the RR servers..it's definately not TG. As the CO..I had one squad of 5 and two one man squads...and 10 people not in a squad. But, all in all, you should try the RR servers from time to time to get in a little practice without a bunch of hardened TGers fragging you. ![]() |

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
This is a good idea. I SL'ed a little while ago when a TG BF2 regular who first tried BF2142 got in our squad and was asking all sorts of questions. He had no idea what unlocks were, even in BF2 he only played unranked TG servers. Anyway, I really noticed now that the game has matured, it's not very friendly to new recruits. The unlocks are not simply options, but rockets, mines, defusers, grenades and everything are a big advantage for regular players and now alot of people have them.

I really like the stock assault gun. It is my best K/D ratio. Like 6/1 in fact!

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
The unlock guns are an option compared to the default gun, and don't fall under what I'm talking about.
Just about everything else is not an alternative, but an upgrade or added item; per my examples, rockets, grenades, mines, advanced med and support boxes, sentry guns...

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
I'm a Voss fan.
But it is a good point. We all have a responsibility as seasoned players to aid newer players, but sometimes its a bit much. ESPECIALLY when you're trying to effectively lead a squad. I'm one for the ability to restrict rank 5 and up only. This way a soldier at least has the general knowledge of the game. Just my opinion though, not saying anyone under rank 5 is a douche or anything.

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
Hmmmm. I'm not sure how to feel about this. I rarely step into BF2142 no I have almost no unlocks. I also have very little clue about what the unlocks do. One of the things that I really don't like about this system is that it requires you play constantly to keep up with everyone else. Personally I prefer BF2 on unranked servers just for that reason. The few games of 2142 that I have actually enjoyed were the ones where I got into a TG squad that would actually explain what I needed to do. The others were just exercises in frustration.

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
What I try to do, when I'm paying attention, is to get the low ranked players in the vehicles since all ranks are equal when using the APC's mortar. Then I recomend they spread their time across all the kits.
That way the player quickly gets their basic badges and their armor badge which can be easily done in 2-4 rounds. That'll net a new player at least 150 points and 3-4 unlocks. That doesn't include ribbons and pins either which will bring in a few more points. If you keep it up the Silver badges will get you 500 points each. It's also a good idea to Squad Lead and CO. Those badges are so easy to get on TG it's almost ludicrous and they'll pretty much get you a free rank unless you're already a Major. The only other simple solution is to steal kits. Since I specialized too heavily off the start my usefulness was limited so I took other people's kits when I found them. Now that I have a lot of unlocks I find that it's still good practice and a good habit to get into. Steal all the kits you need except ones with the Best Buy unlock. It's freaking huge and if you see someone with it (and you can't miss it) circle to their right because that thing gives them a giant blind spot. Seriously, the thing is massive, if you're using it people will ask what you're compensating for.

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
SLing is an extremely effective way to get points even without the badges. On a good round as a SM I might make 80ish career points, but I don't have much trouble making 100+ as a SL all the time.

Re: Advice for the 'raw' recruit
Go into BFHQ and click on any of the badges and it will say the requirements for that badge. They are great for points. On an explosive gallantry badge I got 800 points. Combined with a really good round on a Titan map I totaled 1048 points. Good stuff.
