A couple 'noob' questions...
First off,
1 - As Commander, can you talk to your squad leaders using 'B' while you have the map up? By map, I mean the screen that allows the CO to send out UAV's, orbital strikes, etc. I find that nobody replies to me, so lately Ive been going into the normal game view, pressing B and then speaking. Makes things difficult.
2 - I notice the phrase, 'hold your spawn'. An easy thing to do. As soon as the squad leader spawns, I see the green dot immediately. How does the SL do this? Just by carrying the beacon in his kit? I always thought that the SL had to deploy the beacon and pick it up for you to spawn on him/her.
3 - Arty... I know what it is, but where did this term come from? Battlefield 2?
Just a few things that I need to clear up! Thanks

Re: A couple 'noob' questions...
1: I swiched my binds to the regular BF2 binds (B as talk to squad, V to CO talk), but the normal settings have these keys swiched. In the CO screen (without changing settings), the V key lets you talk to all squads, and the B key talks to the squad you have highlighted on the screen. So when you don't have the screen up, no squad is highlighted and you talk to nobody.
2: SM's can always spawn on their SL no matter what they are carrying in their kit. The Squad Beacon makes a stationary spawnpoint for a squad to spawn on, and takes away the spawn-on-SL ability. You cannot spawn on the SL with a beacon down.
3: It came from BF2.

Pilot, you should check out the Tactical Gamer University event happening on Jan 6th here at TG.
I t sounds like you would benefit greatly from the session. More info can be foung here in the 2142 forums.
P.S. Im pretty shure the word arty has been around for much longer than BF2
......i would imagine it was made up by real military men a long time ago.

Re: A couple 'noob' questions...
As far as I know, "arty" is just short for "artillery," which was a commander's asset in BF2.
