Unlock Advice Sought
Greetings all - a lot of useful info in this forum - good job! I have a few questions as to 'where to go next' on the unlock tree and I thought I would seek the collective wisdom on to what would make me a more valuable squad-mate.
I'm new to 2142 but have some BF esert Combat experience as sniper/gunship pilot.Currently I have unlocked the left tree (to Zeller-H) and the defib. My currently playing style: I realize I have probably overspecialized (and probably should have gone an assault path to be more useful) Recon: I tend to find a position overlooking the area the squad is assaulting and provide supporting fire and warning of incoming threats, with an emphasis on counter-sniper duties, and often will remain behind to guard the flag if it is in a heavily contested location. Assault: I also spend about 1/3 of time on ground as assault+defib flag-capping and as sometime medic Once our titan is boarded I switch to assault and use and defend it for the rest of the game. My dilemma: Should I go for a-Grenades and Sprint (seems generally useful esp. grenades on titan defence) b-right tree of recon (RDX detpacks to give anti-vehicle ability, + netbat to facilitate my 'spotter' role + Lambert to allow a close-medium weapon c-left tree assault to Baur (better multi-role med-long weapon?) I am a big fan heavy calibre semi-autos (and do reasonably with my SCAR set to semi at medium ranges) but i would like an equivalent to the old 7.62 semi so I can support team-mates a bit more close-in Or combo of above? PS: how long does level up take beyond Corporal? Is it worth starting another account as an assault specialist? PPS: I am not in the least interested in support or engineer roles but will consider them (esp. engineer as repairer on armour-heavy maps) Thanks! |

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
For me there is no choice but Grenades and both Sprints. The Sprint unlocks are REALLY noticeably and will get you into better cover and positions.
The RDX and Lambert are really nice but especially on TG you wont catch any vehicles with RDX unless you set up traps beforehand. So after the Sprints Id suggest the Baur way up since you really want those Rockets anyway if you love Assault. Take out whole sniper nests easily. Or get easy kills on heavily defended titan cores since you can shot in there and cause some havoc. As for ranking up - BF2142 doesnt leave any hugh gaps between rank ups. You should be able to go up the ranks in a steady pace. |

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
Priorities for you:
1. Grenades and Sprint 2. Rockets 3. Anything else you want I too got the full tree for Recon first before i came to TG. It's occasionally useful to have all that, so i'm glad i do have it, but personally i find medic/defib/rockets and engineer/pilum/motion mines the two best things for me. Other people do support, but i prefer to focus on my assault. |

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
you want sprint. you aren't nearly as an effective a teammate without it. You need it to keep up with your squad, you need it to reach revivable people, you need it to just generally play. In doing that, you'll get grenades which are very useful.
PS. if you play on TG servers, you'll find the more you play, the easier it gets to get points. I go up ranks about as fast as i did when i was a corporal, and it takes a lot more points. It's not worth it to start another character. You want the versatility in any game, and you want the sprint stuff. you won't be able to play without it once you get it. |

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
Sprints for sure. You can get the grenades as a field up grade. Singe you like to snipe go for the rockets. After that I am sure you will have a feel for what you like.

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
You'll find both benefits and disadvantages to everything in the game. Everyone has it bang on, sprints is WAY more important. Then you want to take a look at what you ENJOY doing. I love being a medic, so I went for the assault trees. I also wanted to be effective in all the roles, so as I ranked up, I went wide.. meaning I unlocked a lot of the tools before I went for any weapons. I suggest you stick to the tactical gamer servers. Main reason is that playing there you'll get a lot of points by operating as a squad. You'll also notice you'll improve as a player more quickly.

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
AS discussed in the unlok strat threads don't automatically go to the top of each tree. You need the player tree as far as sprint, get Rockets but don't feel pressed for the guns. IN TG squads field Unlocks are fast and you'll get plenty of time to pick and choose what you really feel you are good at.

This is good advice IMO. Snipers are the least useful squad members IMO again. I rarely fully unlock to the next weapon. Playing on the TG server will get you field upgrades faster then you can customize your kit, so you only need to go just below the next weapon. My thoughts, 1. The Lambert (right side recon unlock) is one of the best, as it makes the recon more assault style, and less sniperish. 2. Voss (right side assault) deadly in close quarter fights. 3. Rockets in my assault kit 95% of the time. 4. If you like taking out armor, motion mines and the pilum (left side of engineer) are the way to go. First get the sprint and grenades though. Speed is crucial in PvP games and the sprint upgrades give you a movement advantage.

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
This sums it up for me as well. Both sprint unlocks are extremely helpful.

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
@chaf3d - thanks for link.
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'm going with the general wisdom of sprint + grenades. People seemed more in favour of rockets than the Baur. Any reason why the Voss is preferred? (PS: I' more a H&K G3 than a P90 person) After that, I'll toss up: full recon-> Lambert (I kinda like the option of a kinda recon/assault mix) or Assault-> rockets/baur |

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
I made the mistake of falling into the hype about the Voss L-AR and regret unlocking it early. I suggest trying all of the assault rifles for an extended period of time to determine which best suits your style of play. However, if you prefer the feel of the SCAR 11 AR over the Krylov FA-37 AR, then the Baur H-AR might end up being a better choice.

Re: Unlock Advice Sought
Right now when I play assault all I use is the rockets/defib and Baur. It is much better than the default assault guns. The baur is probably not as good as the voss but when you are short on unlocks the left side of the assault tree is much more benefitial than the right. The right side has those smoke granades which are a wasted unlock. Like I said before you have to get rockets! And I still say save the grenades as a field unlock because after two minutes of playing on TG you will have them anyway.

Summary: I get where I am going faster, I can run longer then my chaser (if he doesnt have upgrades) and escape. My 2 cents. Edit: Officially I only have 1 gun unlocked, the Lambert, and I get field unlocks for the rest. I use my standard Assault rifle 80% of the time and do very well for such a "weak" weapon.
