Play Nice!

Hey guys!

I think it's about time for my regular post about improving the quality of the server, again. This time, it's about the way that problematic players are reported to admins.

Obviously, I am not an admin, but I've heard a lot of the 2142 admins get really upset when players report incidents by saying "You should...." or "Kick/Ban...". Not only does it make the admins upset (because they already know what the proper action is), but like ProjectNA's post in the PoE forum, it's really off putting to a visitor to have that hostility towards them (especially when things are phrased badly over global chat) when they probably didn't know they were upsetting someone or that what they were doing is potentially wrong.

So,
  1. Make sure YOU know the difference between server rules, SOPs, and the Gentleman's Agreements. A lot of "We need a BAN!" type of stuff gets reported over things that are not against the server rules, but just considered annoying.
  2. Take the time to make sure what they did wasn't an accident. Those types of things happen. Take the time to try and understand what happened. You never know - Maybe you misunderstood the situation.
  3. Be careful about the attitude you take when you confront a player. Are they new or a server regular? How sure are you that they have read and understand the rules? It doesn't hurt to be nice. Starting off with something like "WTH?@?!? Why'd you <insert offense here>! We need a kick!" isn't really the way to go if you want a positive response from someone.
  4. Be nice, and CORDIALLY explain the rules/your gripe first to the offending player. Then, what I do is to let an admin know that someone is breaking the rules and ask the admin to WATCH the player for a while. Give them a chance. Then, if the player gets snarky at you on the chat or are ignoring your warning and possibly and admin warning by now, let the admin know again and let them handle it.

I'm not saying to stop reporting problems. I'm just asking that we get better at reporting problems so that we don't start becoming highly exclusive to new players to the TG server. If you haven't already, make sure to take a look at Bommando's oft ignored and forgotten post on Reporting Infractions.

Remember, we want TG to grow, not to become and elitist clique.

Re: Play Nice!

on a related note, I am sometimes in a squad where the SL goes balistic when a player does something dumb. not against the rules, they simply made a mistake like forgot to change thier spawnpoint, ran into an apm while others were crouching past it. fired on an enemy while the squad was trying to be stealthy, threw a nade that took a bad bounce, moved the walker too far forward etc.

The squad leaders reaction to these mistakes is critical if we are to continue attracting members to TG. If the SL insults or whines about the player it can be a huge turnoff. wearing TG tags means you are a representative of all of us. This is a game, sure we take it seriously, but it is still a game. it is meant to be fun. lighten up! If you are tagged, please be considerate to the other players in your squad and team. insulting or whining about a teamate acomplishes nothing. learn to laugh at foolish mistakes and if your teamate does not understand what thier mistake was, help them to understand in a kind way.

and to those of you that are exemplary players and squadleaders, thanks for representing TG is such a classy way, there are too many of you to count.

Re: Play Nice!

So here's a hypothetical that I ran into last night...

You're in a squad, your SL suggests doing something against the rules (say... stealing armor from the enemy UCB). The rest of your squad seems to be for this.... how would you go about telling your SL its against the rules without sounding like a) you're rooting for the other team, and/or b) a total prick?

Again... totally a hypothetical

Re: Play Nice!

I just say, it's not allowed on this server. I've had to say it twice to SL's and both have been fine with it. I don't know if I sounded like prick or not. Maybe.

Specificaly I remember having to hold a team back from charging into PAC's UCB on Berlin's when PAC was getting a pounding.

Happened to me too. I just said it's against the rules and they were fine with it.

Re: Play Nice!

A player doesn't always break the rules because it's their preferred play style. Sometimes it's simply, as in the case of bunny-hopping, because it's the common practice on every other server. I know when I stumbled onto the TG CS server Root had to blow me up a few times before I figured out that the rules I had seen on a lot of other servers were actually enforced on this one.

After that good times were to be had by all. So a problem player can turn into a convert very quickly if you give them a chance
