There are only a handfull of really good SLs here. In my mind, anyone can CO. it's learning the interface and getting info to squads. Thats about all you can do anyway.
When I first started BF2142 I would grab command if/when I could on the pub servers. I slowly learned what the heck I was doing and now am useually able to do well (if my SL's Listen). I did not SL much as I hated getting my squad killed by my goofs.

I was playing as SL the other day in a Camp Gib game, and one of my squaddies got very upset as I was not leading like he thought I should. He never made suggestions but complained that I sucked. So he jumped out and started his own squad. Luckily almost no one else followed him, It was not my best effort but again I am still learning the role.

I drop beacons in sneaky locations, I often run as a support when I SL so I can place that auto gun at our backs to keep the ambush from being a total surprise, I will throw down an IDS to make sure we are clear. I have been a SM and suddenly found myself in the SL position because the SL got dropped or kicked. You folks are correct in that SL is much more difficult then Commander. But it is a task I wish to master.

Since I have become a Supporting Member I will be able to stay on the server and actually get to finish a game as SL. I always listen to a SM's advice when I am leading, I may not take it, but I DO Listen.

First and foremost, welcome to TG. When you have a player like this in your squad that refuses to listen or follow orders, or just an irrate complainer, boot them out of your squad. That will end in one of four ways:
  1. They will realize they are no longer in the squad and attempt to join again if there is space. When they join and ask what happened, explain why they were kicked from the squad but don't preach. This will either give them a reality check they need and they well will fall into line or they'll give you an attitude again at which you'll kick them again. Rinse and repeat.
  2. They will join someone else's squad and become their problem (or not, depending on how much they like their new squad leader).
  3. They will form their own squad
  4. They will not realize they were kicked, fail to create or join a squad and will subsequently be kicked from the server for not joining a squad within 90 seconds. There are many players I've kicked from my squad who I wish this one upon.

Also, if you're new to a role or map, don't hesitate to tell your squad. The majority of TG folks will understand and go out of their way to make it as easy and enjoyable for you as possible, just make sure to maintain control of the squad.

Lorax basically covered it, except for this. Please, PLEASE do not let this discourage you. We need as many dedicated SL's as we can get. Everyone starts out new and unsure, but only those who stick with it can become great.

Re: Experience Required...

I keep saying, if you need practice SLing, create a "New SL" squad. Assuming I see it, I'll join.

Re: Experience Required...

When SLing how do you come up with your battleplan to begin the round with? Do you talk to the CO and see what he wants your squad doing? Or do you just come up with an objective and evolve it incorporating the CO's orders and what the other squads are doing?

Re: Experience Required...

I usually have a plan and develope it with my SM's. As soo as we have a CO, I inform them of our plan. If they have a different objective, I will change up according to the CO. You have two minutes to get ready, I personally feel that if a SL has a plan and communicates it, the CO can get organized faster with the squads that do not.
PLus, I usually ask for load-outs based on my objective.
My communication in the beginngin is quick and to the point: "Commander, Squad 1 is going to take and hold Statue, we need an FAV for the start".

Re: Experience Required...

I have a question. I haven't really commanded for about a year except once and I honestly forgot how to issue orders to squads. Really did not want to command but all squads were locked and did not want to create a sinle man squad, thought I could at least try to help the team. Think I mainly kept the walker supplied with crates on the map Belgrade. A few orbitals and emp's on enemy apc and tanks. Tried getting UAV in the air as quickly as it was available also. I still felt so useless as a commander that night. Any help and sites to read up more on how to command would be nice.

Re: Experience Required...

If you hit Caps-lock while being the commander you should see the squads on the right as well as the different types of aid (EMP, UAV etc). Left-click on a squad and then right-click on the map anywhere you wish, and then select the appropriate order to give to the selected squad. An eksample. If you order them to capture a missile silo, then you left click on the squad and then right click on the silo, and then order them to capture it. The SL will automatically get a message to attack, if he accepts it he will automatically send a message to SMs to capture the silo. Done and done
