Sound quality set to either high or ultra high and I know for a fact you can clearly hear that knife unsheathe behind you.
Tactically, keep moving. Never stay in one place for long. Even if all your doing is turning every so often to check your surroundings. Work on your situational awareness.

On the other hand, I don't sweat it much. I've been knifed over 140 times and have only taken 6 tags myself. Although, I do take pleasure from catching the guy in the act and putting him down.

yea, getting knifed sucks, especially when the guy looks like he 10 feet away from you. The game mechanics for the knife are really screwed up.

Aye, I agree with this. About 80-95% of my kills could just as well have been made with a Baur, Voss, Krylov, Scar, Lambert, Shuko, Ganz, Bianchi, or the Engineer LMGs: it's all about getting into position. The twitch reflex and accuracy play such a small part in killing, it is ridiculous.
And there's no way to gain the placement advantage without experience. It's not something you can be taught.

For practical advice: check your six often. Do not go prone in fight unless you have a very specific reason to do so. If you are a sniper, do not make a hen's nest and snipe from there, no matter how static the fight lines may be: always stay on the move. From experience, 50-80% of my knifes are snipers and infantry prone and zoomed in far away. And same goes for my sniper kills.
Best way to avoid this is to get behind cover such that you are covered completely when you crouch, and partially when you are standing. Then, simply pop out, scan the area quickly, and pop back down. Second run, pop back up zoom in on a target, pop back down. Third run, pop up, headshot or body shot pop down. Fourth run, clean up.
This kind of bouncing around from behind cover ticks off snipers trying to get you -- you are not an easy kill so they give up, and it makes you less static and lethargic so that you see and hear infantry in your immediate vicinity and at your sniper's range.
    Fight!

I don't have much advice to give on the subject, but I would recommend this instructional video.

just keep moving, never stop, and don't stop. those are just good rules to follow in 2142 but even better for not getting knifed

During a firefight, check out the mini map, usually if you ahead of the rest of the team chances are an enemy is gonna flank you and notice an easy knife hit. Same goes for when your behind your allies.

Also when your firing and you can't really turn around every second instead keep an eye out for the mini map because the enemy may be spotted and you'll see there is a foe behind you.

One more, let it go, try to make some fun out of it just think perhaps the next time you knife someone it'll be the same guy who knifed you. Remember its not about who knifed first, its about who knifed last. Or defib is even funnier!

I know the proper thing to do when someone pulls a knife on you is to pull your knife rather than unload on them with an assault rifle. But, what if you turn and catch someone just before they go all Norman Bates on you. Is it ok to blast them then? What do you guys think is the proper battlefield etiquette?

There is nothing "proper" about pulling your knife against a knifer. I believe the "proper" thing to do is unload a clip of baur ammo into them and teach them not to bring a knife to a gun fight and then bless their dead body properly, at least that is what we do in the 8th!

Proper? .... Proper?!?! What is this word you speak of? :P

Maybe in BF2 it was considered slightly more honorable to pull a knife out on a knifer instead of just blowing him away. But with the dogtags system in 2142, and the introduction of people who run around simply trying to get dogtags, knifing anyone and everyone no matter how unlikely the kill; I say blast away. You have no obligation to satisfy their retarded thirst for dog tags.

This is war your job is to kill the enemy, if he wants to make it easier for you, take advantage of the opportunity.

    Re: Avoid Getting Knifed?

The knife has a delay of .25 seconds from click to hit, and a range of 1m. The defib has a slightly longer delay, while giving a longer range of 3m.

To avoid getting knifed, don't get into areas where you squad can't support you, and you don't know where enemies are. Just take time to play smarter, and you'll get knifed less, and perform better overall.

Or like I did the other night on the TG server when I was squadding with the 8th, someone was dogtag hungry, so I drew my knife, they stepped back, I threw down some RDX as I backpedaled, they approached with the knife, and they got a face full of RDX, but I still lived.

Just a warning to all you knifers who think recon players are easy knife kills.
