A requested Critique

Some of you know me from CS:S, I've been on and off the site quite a bit of the years. Because of the time off, I'm requesting constructive criticism about my Squad Leading. I am PCS Proven and do what I can to promote that in my Squad Members.

I will state that I do sometimes countermand a CO's orders when in heated situations and the order make no sense. Ex. Being the only squad at a flag defending against a hard push, and the commander sends order to attack a flag no where near where the push is coming from, there's a squad closer, or having another squad moving to take my place defending. In this situation I would reply negative to the orders, try and talk to the CO, and stay at the flag until another squad can relieve mine.

I use the map quite a bit to see what's going on, so if you see me standing and not moving, I'm looking at the flow of the battle and looking where my squad can be of the most use. I'll usually pre plan at the beginning and communicate it to my SM's. That way they have some idea and can plan their kit's accordingly. I usually don't dictate Kit's unless it's armor intensive map. As a SL, I'm not here to tell people how to play, just what goals are expected of them.

When I have the opportunity to squad lead, and I am playing with a bunch of regulars, I usually try to go with the "hands off" or casual approach as you mentioned. However with people new to TG (which there are a lot of these days), I find that strict discipline and order enforcement is required to have a decent game. You will regularly see squads with 3 or more snipers lonewolfing all over the map because some squad leaders, including ones who use VOIP and attempt to fill the role, are not assertive enough.

But I dunno, I haven't played SM under you so this may not apply to you

I think I played Commander while you were squad leading on a bunch of occasions. From commander perspective you really did a good job! You were probably the only squad at one point who would even acknowledge or turn down an order but you did it with respect and reason. Your communication was key, never too much, but you worked WITH the commander not for me. Which is definitely better than a squad that will blindly follow orders!! In my book you fall into the dependable squad leaders group!!

I SL quite a bit, sometimes not too well. It seems that you ahve a good grip on things. I will refuse an order from the CO also, but I usually explain over VOIP my reason. Ex: "Commander, We are defending against a heavy push and need reinforcements", whixh usually follows with a change of orders to defend. Mostly a non-issue with TG CO's.
As long as you communicate with the CO and your SM's then you should be fine. I do not often assign kits, I do ask for a certain number of load-outs and explain the immediate objective. Sometimes an SM with offer a suggestion and it sounds good. I always make it clear that you may change your load-out as the situation changes.
For instance, on Belgrade I usully go heavy enginees in the beginning and then we change up as the battle ensues.

Re: A requested Critique

Communicating the immediate situation to a CO is important when an order comes from that person which may not be tactically adviseable. Most CO's are not up in the thick of it (although that is not so true during the day lately) and need the feedback if an order is not the best for the squad you lead. Definitely do not disregard an order entirely. Not always possible to reply when you are in the heat of the action trying to survive but let the CO know ASAP your opinion (nicely!) and what may be better. As for your squad leading I have found it to be pretty good and appropriate for TG servers. No complaints from me when I'm in your squad.

I have had some problems with this, as I'm working on becoming more proficient with the Recon kit. This, for some reason, immediately says to PUBs that they can do this. I personally feel, if your going to be Recon, the SL position is about the best for it. You can stay back and cover your SM's, you can give intel to the CO, and you should be in a position for your SM's to respawn on you.

I'm hoping to change the outlook of a good Recon SM. They can be of great benefit if they actually stick with the squad. They can be sent to flank enemy positions, RDx chokepoints, claymore defensive positions in case they are rushed, and sneak into the rear to capture back bases to divert enemy resources to take them back. All of these could mean the difference in a game. The "Lonewolf" Recon has given those of us that actually try and work with the squad, a bad rap.

I have had some good luck lately RDx'ing areas where vehicles want to rush into. Blow the vehicle and anyone nearby sky high. So, if your in my squad and I say RDx down, please watch where you walk.
