You bring up a good point about close range. I've not had much luck personally with the Lambert, so I might be a bit bias against it. As for 2 supports, I started out with support, and one should be able to deal with reloading the engy and the recons. I know I could when I played the class, but I'm not everyone else. I never understood why 2142 limited the number of APM's a recon can lay to 2, even when re-supplied. Having 2 recons can get the 360 deg. coverage I am looking for with APM. If they have to slow to approach, it gives the squad time to respond and counter. Having the Lambert in the squad would help in close range and still get the APM coverage I'm looking for.

Yes, I suppose one support should be able to cover the whole squad, but you gave the example of defending statue at Belgrade, you could be approached at almost any angle, and you could end up being broken up into fireteams spontaneously to deal with multiple threats, or you may just have to split up in some way. Having two supports about is just more handy. And I do agree that two APMs only is just so annoying, when you can have 5 motion mines, and you can crouch/crawl to get by an APM, but you can't do anything to get past a motion mine while in a vehicle, talk about not being balanced. Anywho, yes, I personally have had quite a lot of luck with the Lambert (I've not used it for months now, but it's still my best weapon statistically), and it's weird how people forget that when you're recon, you don't necessarily need the sniper rifles, it's not the most used weapon here at TG, so most people forget about it (well that's my theory at least ) But yes, I do agree that this would definitely work as an alternative, and I understand your point about slowing people down, it prevents rushes (I used to hold chokepoints by putting RDX and APMs at chokepoints, when one would blow, people would know to crawl, I'd switch kits with a downed assault (get him up) and then fire rockets as they approach, but they wouldn't run for fear of being APMed, so it was easier to get them. And anyone foolish enough to do it would get blasted.) But also, you might consider the possibility of a sentry gun with your extra support, seeing it fire/get destroyed/hearing it fire/keeping a track of it and whether it's alive on your minimap, would also alert you to enemies, and the improved sentry gun fire might down some as well.

Edit: Sorry, yes, you didn't bring up Belgrade, it was Fubar, but it still got me thinking

After some time thinking about this, I found a one support solution. The SL calls in for an ammo drop ASAP or the support drops a box at a predetermined location for the other fireteam. Which I seldom see when people defend. Your support and medics carry 2-3 boxes, can't remember which right now. Either way it gives you 2 reload and heal rally points and mobile assets. You can spread the rally points out tactically enough to help the general defense of an area. On the attack, I have seen many squads drop everything right on the flag, just to stay alive. SL needs to remember the order of rally points so that when he create's new rally points he remembers which old one disappeared.

Re: Squad balance

I have to say that the squad you suggested Xen would only be good on defense. period. and that is with all your APMs. one support can resupply two squads of medics shooting rockets like there is no tomorrow, I did it last night, so no worries about needing a supply drop.

My squad (in general)

SL = me = support w/ clark, IDS, EMP/sentry
SMx4 = medics w/ AR, rockets, defib
eng maybe sniper but only with guardian or a similar style

if we need a break through (gib or berlin)
SL = infiltrator lambert, decoy, extended camo
everyone else = medics
maybe one engy on berlin such as the dreaded Arithea or Eroak to keep the APC of me as I get my squad to the back flag
