    Success with Walkers

Can anyone offer some tips on how to use Walkers effectively? I really like the machines, and would like to use them more, but I pass on them so that others can use them because I don't feel comfortable using them. All too often I get destroyed very quickly, before I can really help the team. I played BF1942 for quite a while, so I'm very familiar with tank strategy. I just want to master these new Battlewalkers. So please, any tips and tricks would be awesome.

    Re: Success with Walkers

First you need to learn your own weaknesses:

Your head has most armor. A hit will only cost your about 20. Legs are more vulnerable and you get hit for around 33. Your butt is weak and things will hit you for about 60 to 70. The vent under your butt if your absolute weakpoint. An Armor weapon will do about 90 damage there and Infantry can hit you there with normal weapons for approx 1 dmg each bullet.

Should your Walker ever touch the 15 health mark it will trip over - even if it is repaired up again!

A good walker driver looks out for cover for his legs. If only your head sticks out somewhere a normal supplybox will keep you up vs one enemy engineer easily.

The worst foe of a walker is EMP and Orbital Strike combo. If it hits you on the head you will get destroyed unless you have some suicidal engineers right under you. When you stand still and get repaired always look down on the floor and keep holding SHIFT. You can see the ground "sparkling" if there is EMP incoming - quickly press forward to make a step out of the central point of the strike and survive.

Right after there are EMP Grenades and Motion Mines. If you get stuck in a good EMP Grenade trap you are pretty much helpless - it happens to the best of us. Do not bail out just pray for your team to do something. Motion Mines will follow your walker and if they detonate will do anywhere from 20 to 80 damage. The Motion Mine Bait unlock makes so much difference when driving a Walker. After you practised some Walker you will get to know the "common" Motion mine spots - so you dont walk into them.

If you fight an enemy Rosch shot your Rockets at it. If it is still not dead aim for the left side of the Rosch - if you shot onto the Barrel the splash damage will slowly kill the gunner in it.

Your walker can run forward about twice as fast as you can walk backwards. Use this to your advantage and always keep an emegency path in your front so you can escape quickly if there is heavy fire incoming instead of having to crawl backwards and being an easy target. When your shieldcharge is down and you took even a sliver damage it is time to retreat and repair!

Try Squadding up with a good Squad and escort it with your Walker. You can help them as they can help you. You will scare the APCs away that try to eliminate them and they can take care of people EMPing you and recons rushing you. A good Squadleader calling in Supplies for you is always sweet. Sometimes there is also a nice gunenr to be found who will happily hop out to fix you up during the round.

Try to stay alive. Even if you do not get a big killscore it will still focus the enemy team on your walker. Not every tactic has to award "points" to be effective

Just practise the Walker. Some maps have a hugh respawn time like around 5 minutes on Camp G - not so suited. But maps like Highway Tampa have lots of walkers with a better respawn time - shouldnt make you feel so bad about helping your team when you should go down.

Driving a Walker and keeping it alive can be one of the most exciting things in BF 2142. When you accompany your troops you will be their "Avatar" and give them strength and willpower!

Also, whatever you do, DO NOT engage any vehicle (especially a tank) at long range. They can hit you with ease, and your rockets will just fly off to their sides.
Try and watch for APC/tank combos. The APC EMPs you, then the tanks pounds you into submission. If you get caught, try and take out the APC first, if you can.

I rarely drive the walker but when I do I always try to leave myself with a forward (most preferable) or backwards straight line escape route. It makes getaways much handier. Try to stay out of confined spaces where you will have to turn and walk at the same time to escape.

Always remember that squads communicate, they will try distract your attention while an engineer or recon tries to kill you undetected! Hit and run tactics will help you a lot.

I'm not a very vehicle-person, but from my experience in the Walker, if you are near Engineers or a Supply Box, a Walker is hard to take down. But nevertheless, Walkers are a big target, even from a distance. Walkers generally lose against tanks, but APCs and Infantry fear the Walker.

When driving a walker i always try to be more a "support" walker than a "frontline" walker. Its easier to find enginers and help of any kind.

I've fought and one a battle against two tanks, an apc, and a very lousy gunship. Don't underestimate it's power.

Almost always as a walker, i get a person in my squad to gun and hop out to repair when the walker s taking a beating. When fighting against a tank, keep circling around it so it can't get a clear shot.

    Re: Success with Walkers

If you have a two person crew for the walker, the pilot should go support with the IDS and the gunner as an engineer with bait. This combo allows the pilot to stay in the walker 99.9% of the time leaving the gunner to clear mines and make repairs.

If you are in a squad tasked with defending a CP (statue on Belgrade, for instance) ALWAYS have your SL request a supply drop for the walker.

If you are attempting to engage armor and it hasn't seen you yet, try and flank it and hit the sides or rear to do more damage. An APC or tank can't take many direct hits from there and survive for long.

The anti-armor rockets fire in a pattern: one side then the other. If you are close to armor, one of your shots may miss. Get used to slightly rotating and firing to keep the rockets firing as close to center as you can, this should help ensure that every shot taken counts.

On that note, do not fire the rockets as fast as you can, odds are you will miss a few and will then have to wait for the lauchers to reload. Instead gauge your shots and fire them with a purpose rather than spray and pray.

Always know which way your feet are pointing.

Always go down with the ship - don't be the guy that gives the enemy the walker rather than dying.

Thanks a lot for the tips everyone! I will definitely be playing the walker in the near future.

Unfortunately, the one unlock tree I decided not to do anything with is Engineering. I'll have to work on that, or start another alt, lol.

Yeah..the Admin Team should make this an insta-ban. Or at the very least allow the person to be mercilessly given wet-willies, pink-bellies, Indian burns and the like.

Bailing out of a gunship is a different story

If you ask "What?" after I say "EJECT EJECT EJECT", you'll only be talking to yourself.

Two things nubs are the most guilty of:

Don't forget that your walker can 'sprint' indefinitely (why you'd ever walk forward at the regular pace is beyond me) which makes it about as fast as a tank.

The walker can also crouch. IIRC if someone is standing under you, this will instantly squish them. A nice defense if you get caught by someone trying to fire a surprise into your Skywalkers. This also lowers the profile somewhat to protect your vulnerable legs behind sparse cover.

I knew about the crouch but using it to kill someone trying to get under you is a great idea, I never knew you could do that. This has been a great thread.
