In more than 1 way:

yes, as an SL you should set goals and targets but be flexible and willing to improvise based on your squads performance and coordination level. You should be vigilant to find your squad's strengths and weaknesses.

On a second level, the SL should know his limitations and ability to watch the situations. Orders should be tactically sound and based on intel (if you get any at all). The SL's knowledge of his limitations should be to the extent of, as already mentioned, ability to defend/attack.

Re: 2142 squad leading basics

Great outline!

I'd just like to make the following small grammatical correction:

On page 34, Section 2, Paragraph 4, Sub-paragraph B, third line, fourteenth word:
"the"

Aces baby, keep it up!

c. Unpredictable (randomly boot squadies you don't like)
e. cuss your squad out frequently, especially when they miss a revive
i. They need to know when they are doing things right, not just when they are doing things wrong.
f. Decisive (decide quickly which one you will use as a scape goat when things go wrong)

b. crossing the street and seeing the high arc of a mortar shell coming from that apc you did not notice makes for an unhappy squad. (blame them for not warning you about the apc)
3. Encourage contact reports: your squad is your eyes an ears. (if you die it is always your sm's fault)
h. Be firm but unemotional when players are not following orders. (scream at them)
i. You need to follow orders or you will be removed from the squad. Then restate the order they need to follow. (The second they disobey give them the boot)
ii. Be forgiving. Don’t mistake newness for insubordination. (noobs don't deserve to be in your squad, boot them)
i. The intangibles
i. Lead your squad, give them orders, be charismatic, play to your personality strengths and leadership style. (if they don't listen scream more)
i. Spanky is fun, not all that useful. (spanky is god, praise him)
e. Light vs heavy armor (who uses heavy? Only noobs)

1. Verbal coms are kept simple and short. (wrong, make it as lengthy as possible with lots of mouth breathing and language)

i. “If you do not have voip get out of the squad, turn off your comp and go get a 5 dollar mic.”

e. Ask for kit volunteers (give the squad 10 seconds to comply and if no one does boot them all) (be specific here)
Just a little revision. Thought you lot might want a bit out of the strategy compendium of the 7th.

In seriousness, great guide science. Squadleading is a hard thing to do, but a truly great squadleader will make his squadmembers play like they have never played before. I consider myself truly lucky to have been in the company of great squadleaders like argh, silver, and many other wonderful squadleads that tg has produced.

Re: 2142 squad leading basics

Amazing read, definitely need to keep this in mind when I actually feel comfortable stepping up to the SL position. Prior to me finding TG, I always thought I was a good SL, but after playing here for the past few weeks, I feel like a total noob.

It's funny, really: I feel completely comfortable taking commander, especially on smaller maps, but I cannot bring myself to try and run a TG squad.
