yes, as an SL you should set goals and targets but be flexible and willing to improvise based on your squads performance and coordination level. You should be vigilant to find your squad's strengths and weaknesses.
On a second level, the SL should know his limitations and ability to watch the situations. Orders should be tactically sound and based on intel (if you get any at all). The SL's knowledge of his limitations should be to the extent of, as already mentioned, ability to defend/attack.

Re: 2142 squad leading basics
Great outline!
I'd just like to make the following small grammatical correction:
On page 34, Section 2, Paragraph 4, Sub-paragraph B, third line, fourteenth word:
"the"
Aces baby, keep it up!

Just a little revision. Thought you lot might want a bit out of the strategy compendium of the 7th.
In seriousness, great guide science. Squadleading is a hard thing to do, but a truly great squadleader will make his squadmembers play like they have never played before. I consider myself truly lucky to have been in the company of great squadleaders like argh, silver, and many other wonderful squadleads that tg has produced.

Re: 2142 squad leading basics
Amazing read, definitely need to keep this in mind when I actually feel comfortable stepping up to the SL position. Prior to me finding TG, I always thought I was a good SL, but after playing here for the past few weeks, I feel like a total noob.
It's funny, really: I feel completely comfortable taking commander, especially on smaller maps, but I cannot bring myself to try and run a TG squad.
