Defensive Strategy Discussion: Wake Island

Again, sorry about getting this posted so late in the week--we went out of town this past weekend and are still recovering. In light of the final battle of the Shockwave Payback! campaign, I'll be posting discussions for Wake Island, the map of choice.

The EU has had some limited success in its counterattack campaign against the PAC. However, for their success to continue, they must be able to hold their Pacific resupply station at Wake Island. The Americans were able to defend it from a heavy Japanese invasion in WWII, but much has changed since then, and the weapons and vehicles used by both sides have changed the face of war.

As the defenders, how do you keep the invading forces from taking the island? Do you allow them to run amok at the ends of the island and hold the core, hoping bleed will win the game? Or do you try to keep every last control point from the PAC's grip?

Discuss.

Re: Defensive Strategy Discussion: Wake Island

Like Dr.Beat said in the offensive thread, the Titan is key to this map.

I usually have my squads do a full Titan defense right from the start, have 2 engies with SAAW, motion mines and sensors. Have one engie mine the hanger, and the other mine the two back decks. Have a support guy with IDS drop an IDS in the trench at the back of hanger, and drop a supply box up front for the engies. That support guy then mans the Titan guns if nobody else is. Everyone else takes assault and waits in the ramps between the hanger and the core. If the engies get owned, run up to revive, otherwise sit tight and get ready to collapse on the consoles if a rush starts. In the case of a full squad rushing, the Support guy would fall back and the engie with the hanger bay MMines takes over the AA gun.

Generally this setup will get a single squad a ton of action and they should be able to defend the titan against alot of forces. If the defenses get run over, the squad should give a sitrep to the commander, who hopefully is competent enough to realize the value of holding the titan and sends a squad or two back to the Titan to help lock it down, depending on the size of the offense. If PAC isn't attacking the Titan for awhile, then the consistent vigilance of of the squad on defense will prevent the enemy from being able to mount a successful rush.

The Titan is especially hard to take down if you let PAC push you back into the central dock area. Once you get pushed back that fair, you can severely cut off their avenues of attack, and force them to abandon the other flags to launch a meaningful assault, which can then be recaptured by a squad podding out from the Titan and making a run for them. Any manpower PAC delegates to back flag defense reduces the effectiveness of the Titan/Dock assault which is critical to PAC's victory.

The key to EU's success on this map is to bait PAC's attention away from the Titan and Central Dock area, and to hold them off if they aren't falling for the bait. The best way I've seen to bait PAC away from the central area is to completely abandon the side flags. PAC gets very little meaningful benefit from taking those flags, so by abandoning them, you're giving PAC the oppurtunity to slow down their own assault, and dig their own graves, plus if they don't fall for it and do a full out assault on the Titan/Dock flags, you have all your forces ready and waiting for them.

What I said in the offensive discussion applies here too, the titan is the prize. You want to make sure no air transports land enemies on your titan, so make sure that your gunship takes down incoming air units, with priority towards transports. Have gunners in the titan to also help defend against air threats. This should take 1 squad. Place another 2 squads near docks, one closer to the titan, and one closer to the entrance of the inside docking area. These 2 squads are in reserve, the squad near the entrance should move to the flag where the armour spawns incase enemies go on that flag, the squad close to the titan should move into titan in a case that enemies land and get inside the titan. Have another squad at the armour spawn flag to take up defense there. So you basically have 4 squads defending the middle flags. Have your armour split up and defend the outer flag that is CLOSEST to the docks, use the foward ones as delaying positions and lay some nasty suprises for the enemy, the advantage with defending the two closer flags is that you have a tighter defense and it is hard for your enemy to get behind your lines. I am talking large scale 64/48 players here. With less players, just make defense tighter around the middle flags.
