    Countering the damn ROFLCOPTER

There are not many round on TG where I don't have fun. I've said it before, I don't need to win to have fun. Hell last night our squad had the best time on no vehicles tiny verdun and lost by what 40+ tickets. The only time I don't have fun is when I can't spawn and live more than 3 seconds. Well my good friends this was my problem last night. Titan map and I see the effing ROFLCOPTER, well I didn't so much as see it as get killed by it.

Several of us spawned in with SAAWs to try to take it down. The problem I kept having was even sighting it. I'd get a lock, but the transport was 300-350 meters away and out of my field of vision or barely within vision. One time I launched 3 volleys at it in a row and never got a hit indication. The other times, I'd spawn in and I'd lock on to the transport barely within visual sight and be taken out by the guns within a second of spotting or locking onto the transport.

So as opposed to continuing to just bitch about it, I want to try to find a way to counter the ROFLCOPTER.

I'd like some serious suggestions on how to counter the ROFLCOPTER. We tried with the SAAWs and it didn't work. We probably could have tried to counter with our own transport, but I don't think our pilots are used to flying the transports.

That is a good question... Roflcopters are very good in the right hands.. Only way i've ever taken them down was by using the gunship. Anything else, they just move out of range, repair, and come back. Gotta say a few times we did almost die due to your massive amount of SAAW's, and one time we almost smashed into the ground be cause we got EMP'd by an AA gun.

    Re: Countering the damn ROFLCOPTER

I can give you reasons why the Roflcopter owned so much that rounds - many of them donīt even directly relate to the Roflcopter itself. The natural Nemesis of a Roflcopter is a Gunship.

    A) The PAC Team only gets 1 Gunship on the Titan Spawn
    B) The PAC Gunship is so much worse than the EU Gunship
    C) The EU Team had very good pilots in their Gunship
    D) The SAWW still bugs out too often

Once the Roflcopter has no real natural Enemy he can just go around and do what he wants. Sort of like the Rabbits in Australia did. A good Gunship can demliosh even the best Roflcopter. Back then on Squadplay I killed the No1 Transporting crew worldwide often by just tossing TV missiles at them from far.

    E) Having one of the best Transport Teams worldwide on the other does not really help balancing:

While awards in the game donīt say much usually both Reaper and me made our Aircraft Combat Medal which needs a whole lot of 8000 Kills in Airvehicles.

Now enough with dancing around the "problem". While I love driving a Walker I am still always preaching the usage of EMP Grenades which usually would be counterproductive to my kills and lifetime. But I like challenges so I will give you some insight on the Roflcopters weaknesses.

    A) Anything being above a roflcopter has a hugh advantage since the Transport guns do not have a very large angle to shot upwards. A Gunship coming from above usually means a sure death. But even an enemy Transport being brought up to a height can totally destroy another Transport being below. Even more if there are 1-2 SAWWs in its side to support the Gun fire.

    B) Anything being on the right side of the EU transport is safe usually. The right gun (left if you look at it from the front) is borked and wonīt deal any damage unless it has a freak moment. Flying a PAC Gunship or Transport I always try to attack from that side.

    C) Walkers are a big area denial for the Roflcopter. The Roflcopter cannot harm them while they have very fast traveling projectiles that will ignore shields plus EMP to support them. This factor will be ruled out tho if the Transport has excellent Gunship support to get rid of the Walkers on the map.

    D) Hide in APCs to protect yourself. The Roflcopter cannot harm any armor. Again this factor gets dangerous when the Gunship support is there. The driver seat of the APC has a wide arc up. You can try to shot out a passenger with your main gun or even EMP the transport with a luck shot.

    E) SAWWs hidden in unusual places. Search yourself some bush aside like normally only a lonewolf Sniper would. Keep targetting the transport but do not fire. I am sure the pilot will get nervous after a while

    F) If you see a possbile map upcoming that is prone to being Roflcoptered and you seee a possible Roflcopter Squad on the enemy team make the right choices of the flags to initially aim for. For example on Sidi: Aim to get a good Pilot into the Gunship at Reactor Core. Keep the Gunship alive at all cost herassing the Transport. Also aim for Warehouse or Offices corresponding to whatever side spawns the Walker for you.

    G) Stop spawning on the Silo or Flag that is camped. While this is not solving the problem of the Tranport directly it is often the better choice. Spawning in on a flag or silo that is camped is similar to spawning into a flag that is under fire by an APC or repeatenly rushing into corridor 1 or 2 when there is RDX all over.

Head for another silo or flag and set up an anti air defense there before the Transport makes it its home.

First, thank you Lyra. I'm always amazed at how much you are willing to contribute even if it means a more difficult round for you. While I think most of us would be more likely to guard our weakness, you put them out for everyone to take advantage of.

I think to most people this probably seems simple and common place, but damn if I never thought about it. I never think to myself. OK the transport doesn't have missiles so I'll be safe in armour. These two tips NEVER occured to me

Again another good point. I was fairly well hidden a couple of times last night, but I chose to give my position away and leave myself open to be cut down. I'm sure that lock on sound after awhile would drive anyone a little nuts.

Again a great point, I often get sucked into the thought process that I MUST TAKE DOWN THE ROFLCOPTER, and I spawn and spawn and spawn and soon I'm frustrated and have blinders on to the rest of the game.

The APC drivers gun has almost perfect accuracy. Meaning little to no spray even at distance. I shot a few people out of the transport the other night when it was hovering overhead. Another example: last night a gunship was shot out of the sky over head when defending a silo. I was able to kill the bailed out pilot, still falling in his parachute using that gun. My overall accuracy is only about 15% but that gun is dead on even in my hands.

I agree that Armor is the best tool against the Copter (other then the gunship)... Just be sure someone in your squad has Motion Mine Bait, as those copters can do 'fly by' mining operations against armor.

    Re: Countering the damn ROFLCOPTER

Awesome tips, I will definitely keep some of those in mind....

Typically, if I know aircraft are coming and I'm near a capture-point, I'll just hide until it is positioning to land. For most pilots except those who are skilled, this takes a moment or two of slower movement. One to two hits from a Pilum will take it down.

The tank turrets don't arc up high enough... unless you're on an embankment. If I find myself under fire from a Gunship or Roflcopter, I'll try to position my armor (especially tanks...) on an embankment so I can get a higher arc. Believe it or not, I've shot down my share of aircraft with tanks... this tacticl becomes relatively invalidated though, especially with the gunship, when the pilot isn't the type to just linger around or has a one-target mindset. All of that turning around and repositioning to blow little 'ol me off the ground gives me more time to reposition and to create an evasive tactic (especially with the PAC tank) but if they throw down some missles then... keep... on... going....somewhere... else...

Those are just minor items, but I think they should be touched on, too. Most people drive a tank and just shoot forward or to the side and that's it.

    Re: Countering the damn ROFLCOPTER

Since a ROFLCOPTER is typically up high in the air, it usually isn't focused on taking flags, rather it's focus is typically area denial. With that in mind, the way I deal with the ROFLCOPTER is to usually ignore it. The only time it's worthwhile to stick around under a ROFLCOPTER and that flag or silo is critical to our team, otherwise, spawn somewhere else, take another flag, etc.

Also, something that hasn't been mentioned:

If you see a ROFLCOPTER in the sky, remember to do these three things in any order:
    1. Q-Spot the ROFLCOPTER
    2. Q-Spot the ROFLCOPTER
    3. Q-Spot the ROFLCOPTER

You should also pass along it's location to your SL, who should consider relaying it to the CO.

Thank God there is a way to get rid of that pest! I wonder if EMP-striking it would help get rid of it.

    Re: Countering the damn ROFLCOPTER

EMP strike will help if you can hit it..

I've had a bit of fun shooting my Pilum at any Transports or Gunships recently, and I'm surprised how well it works (When they are fairly stationary/hovering and not too high). It can do enough damage for them to have to leave for repair, and if they still hang around getting repairs from someone inside, then it's only 1 more shot away from going down! Ideally you want someone in the air defense, or SAWW to back this up, as it's not the most accurate way to take it down, but satisfying when it works! The Pilum is pretty good on accuracy if your not moving, and the transport is a big lump of metal, so take aim!!

I'm not that great with the SAWW, but it's handy to scare them as Lyra mentioned. Any SAWW tips?

My favorite, because this is my weapon of choice as an Engy, is to shoot it with the Pilum. There is no warning, one shot does alot of damage and makes it go away. If you hit it in the opening, you kill at least one person.
If you are assault and can not find good cover, shoot rockets at the infantry inside. They can't repair if the engy's are dead.

I've blown ROFLCOPTERS using the default rockets for the engineers without much problem. It does more damage than a SAAWs and i've gotten the tracking system to do some crazy stuff.

Land on it with a pod.

It works! Though is that technically 'ramming'?

If you go nitpicking you could say yes.

But everyone using common sense would say that podding on something with a dispensable Pod while the Pilot survives could be a valid tactic in this war.

An expection would be when people pod on transports or gunships that are repairing on the Titan. Because they will fall into the Titan shield after and die. That is a suicide tactic.

Thanks Lyra and Catman for bringing it up - this was some great, informative reading for me to wake up with! Last night I did come up against your roflcopter squad (lyra & reaper) and if this information was with me, would have had much better success.

I did manage to take it down the the saaw once, after about 15 tries.
