Transferring In - Tips for people new to the TG Server

Hi, I started playing on your servers a few days ago. Now, I'd found the site before and amused myself lurking and reading up on how things are done, the TG way and the Gentleman's Agreement. All good stuff that I am happy to abide by as best I can.

However, merely reading up on how people play on the TG Server, tactics and protocol, doesn't really prepare you for jumping into the frey here. What I want to discuss in this thread then is tips for people who aren't new to BF2142, but haven't played here, or in properly managed squads before.

Yes, I'm mostly trying to get advice for myself, but I figure it might help everyone else too

Okay, to get the ball rolling:

Be advised:
When someone tells you a better way to do something, listen, learn and try to pick it up. Most people here (at least those with tags or from IHS) are more experienced and really do know what they are talking about.

Know your role:
I, for one, don't have all the unlocks, and am not great at all the classes. So if the SL asks for something I don't have, I let him know, so he can adapt his plan. A simple 'Sorry, don't have (insert weapon the SL is asking for)' means that while you aren't gonna look great, your SL can put you to use where you can make a difference.

Don't get scared:
See that empty tank there? Better that you take it than an enemy does. Of course, I don't mean butt in line, or run screaming 'mineminemineminemine!' at it, but often grabbing that empty, abandoned tank at an outlying flag, then using it to support your squad sure beats leaving it there for an enemy soldier to grab. (If there's an armour squad, or if ordered not to, then leave it, this is just a general hint, not gospel)

The point is, don't be scared to use the assets you've got.

'Sorry' goes a long way:
I got booted from a squad the other day for not following orders. I got lost on Belgrade and ended up at the wrong point, and was kicked from the squad for not obeying orders. I was confused, and a little annoyed, until I realised I had gone to totally the wrong end of the map, and the guy I was following was not my SL, but the leader of another squad.

Did I complain? No, I apologised and noted that I had gotten lost without realising. The SL kindly reinvited me to the squad and we went on to kick butt and win the round. Moral of the story? When you get something wrong and piss someone off, saying 'sorry' costs nothing and may make a big difference to how you look to the other players.

Vorlon? Vorlon? Oh geez you must be one of those Babylon 5 fanatics to have taken that name. Next thing we know your kids are named Sheridan or Londo. But then again since I have all 5 years and each of the extra TV Movies on DVD I am as much a fanatic as anyone can be.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. I've got some more thoughts along these lines, I just need to get 'em in some kind of writeable order. I'll post them in the thread and if met with general approval I'll edit them into the original post, save people hunting through for the best stuff. And as I said in the original post, I welcome anyone elses wisdom on this topic.

Here's one for now -

You have a brain:
Unlike many servers, which degenerate swiftly into a hopeless meat grinder whenever there's competition for a flag, on the TG server thinking is rewarded with the really good squad scores. Think 'can I hit that guy?' before giving away your position blazing away at an entrenched enemy. Think 'can my team afford to lose me?' before charging into close combat. Think 'is someone camping this pile of dead bodies?' before rushing for the revive.

Nice post Vorlon! Great perceptions and maybe will change the way people act when they first come to TG. I know for myself, I was in shock! I got my butt handed to me until I realized some of things for myself. Thanks and welcome!

Ask questions, why do they do what they do? Squad with different leaders, we all have our own way. Don't be shy!

Practice swapping kits, this is a great way to become proficient with other weapons that you may not have yet. Also, very important in the field for health and ammo.

In my opinion, there should never be empty armor on the battlefield. I often ask my SM's to bring armor up on maps like Suez, Belgrade, etc. Empty armor is waste armor!

I will usually ask why you are not with us, always gives you a chance to realize you are not where you should be. Also, you may have seen something that I missed and I want to know about it.
Always call out enemy movement.
The last bit of advice is:
If you haven't already done so, then join us on TS. Here you can ask for invites to squads and ask questions between rounds. Also, the between round banter can be alot of fun.
