Positions and Tactics
WARNING: THIS GUIDE DOESN’T INCLUDE ARMOR SQUADS
(Maybe I’ll do that next…)
Okay everyone, I am bored here and decided to write another guide at work to pass the time by,
In this Thread/Discussion/Guide I wish to talk about… Here it comes, Squad Leaders.
Now there aren’t many people who enjoy it due to several facts/opinions (please feel free to quote this part and add more reasons/excuses then your personal opinion with a “I don’t SL because….." [response goes here])
"I don’t SL because it’s too much work"[Yes its more work but a SL is a normal soldier, just one that has more responsibilities and makes more decisions]
"I don’t SL because I can never get enough points" [True depending on your style of SL you are and I will explain this later, but it heavily depends on the actions of your teammates]
"I don’t SL because people don’t listen to me or join my squad"[I used to have a problem with this when I first started playing on BF2 and BF2142, just takes some experience and credit, once you’ve established this people will LOVE to join your squad]
"I don’t SL because I don’t have a mic"[This is ultimately the WORST excuse EVER! I have been a SL plenty of times when I didn’t have my headset and refused to use my Comp’s built in mic, they didn’t invent a Squad Chat key for nothing! And we still dominated!]
"I die too much to be a squad leader"[I’ve had this problem in the past, current now if you see me, I will average 20-30+ K / 5-8 D ration, why? Well I know where to be and when to move lol]
"I don’t SL because we don’t have a commander"[So….]
"I don’t SL because some people in my squad listen to me"[Easy fix, kick ‘em]
Now this is the main part:
Recently I have been experimenting on the live server rather than a different or private server so I can get maximum experience to write this. There are more styles of Squad Leading I’ve recently played through and got very high effects from them. They types spread across from Long Range, Mid, Close Range and on Kit situation. Each range is biased off the distance from the flag.
Assault:
While a squad leader as an Assault your Primary role is your directive from your Commander and your Secondary is Healing/Reviving
Long distance SL:
From this position, least favorite with this kit, your eyes are up and your troops are fighting while you stay safe, in the event where your troops are outmatched this leave you plenty of time to get up and pull back remaining yourself to be a mobile spawn for squad mates to respawn and high off the ones chasing, also if you are one skilled with using the Baur on single, you can aid with suppressing fire helping you at least get some assist points in.
Mid distance SL:
From this position, you are able to be downed with some effort, but you are a forward spawn point, from this position you can at least attempt to revive some allies without exposing yourself too close, I’d prefer to take along some smokes too they will be handy for running up, reviving and then pulling back
Close distance SL:
From this position, you are going all out Rambo, in this position you a pure target, keep running and don’t stop to shoot if you in a wide open spot or else, keep your allies alive at all cost and stay next to at least 2 squad mates for instant revives to keep up your spawn point.
Support:
While a squad leader as a Support your Primary role is your directive from the CO and your Secondary is to keep ammo out and suppressing power
Long distance SL:
From this position you can do one of two things, you can be a distance spawn for your guys and give supportive fire from a distance on targets or you can throw emps out like a mad man while your troops move up, just remember you can be flanked so I’d advised a turret behind you to watch your back or leave a nasty surprise around the corner when your are pulling back
Mid distance SL:
From this distance you are a vital soldier in the squad, not only are you a advance spawn, you are also defending a vital area, just bunker down in a area and defend that area while the other troops move up and attack, I would also like to advise that this would be the perfect opportunity to use a RDX shotgun =P
Close distance SL:
From this position you are ahead of the pack, attracting all the attention and asking to be shot down, when in close range, you should at least bring an IDS along, the only way I get over 70% of my Ks is because I watch my radar like a hawk and ambush those who runs around the corner
Engineer:
While a squad leader as a Engineer your Primary role is to repair vital armor and your Secondary is to follow the CO’s directive
Long distance SL:
From this position, you are considered a repair post. Unless you are good with aiming rockets or have impeccable timing with the pilum, this position is useless because not many engys are effective from a long range unless it’s a SAWW.
Mid distance SL:
From this position, you can be a very lethal anti-vehicle unit and someone okay from mid-range combat, but against a rifle you are out matched. In mid distance I advise you stand in a narrow area to make good use of the SMG, also, if you’re a pro at this, you can always lay your own mines then throw mine bait on the armor to have the effect of your mines attacking someone (this murders infantry)
Short distance SL:
From this position you are considered and these are my words, a Anti-Vehicle Ninja! The SMG can hold you up against a considerable amount of people today with the upgrade so defending yourself shouldn’t be hard, as your main focus should be staying alive defending a single location rather than jumping around fighting like a person who wants to be taken out also you can use motion mines as traps for infantry if you carry along Motion Mine Bait as well.
Recon
While a Squad leader as a Recon your Primary role is logistic for your squad and your Secondary role is the CO’s directive
Long Distance SL:
From this position you are far by the most valuable asset to the squad, you are a distant unit who can lay down impressive firepower from a long range, only problem is getting the point, the way to get so many point with a recon is to get assist not kills, just get some body shots, soften up the targets and let your squad wipe them down. I don’t advise a Lambert at all!
Mid Distance SL:
From this position you can cover your units as they attack as well as defend a tight area, also with the quickness of a light armored, camo recon, you can run outta there REAL fast.
Close Distance SL:
From this position you are playing like me. Close range Lambert carrying Recon, one of the most annoying troops on the battlefield due to their weak guns and their constant firing weapons, lol, in all seriousness you can run around a flag area in circle before you are shot down, constantly moving evading and letting your troops spawn rather than fighting to your death.
I dunno what I will right about next, but just keep this is mind, I switch up from these tactics constantly, and hey look at me now, 30+ kills a round as a inf and less than 8 deaths

Re: Positions and Tactics
Good info. I got a laugh out of the following line...
I don’t SL because some people in my squad listen to me"[Easy fix, kick ‘em]
I think I actually have been kicked out for that before ;-)

Re: Positions and Tactics
This is a very good guide!! 'couse wen I use the support kit been a SL I stay on the back, providing fire cover, while the rest of the crew rush the flag or wen they have to pull back. And wen I have to rush a flag, I play as Rambo, with the crew behind me.
So this guide works.ˇˇWen the time comes I do wath I have to do!!

Re: Positions and Tactics
Good post
Just one thing- I only use the recon kit when squad leading only to sneak past enemies. A cloaked and ghosted SL is one of the most dangerous things you can encounter. He can easily flank you and cap a back flag, or flank you and call in 5 more people to slaughter your squad and THEN cap your flag.
A SL should attempt to avoid battle when going recon. He is a moving spawn point, capable of exploiting enemy weaknesses to great effect.|TG-Irr|Adaxa

Re: Positions and Tactics
Thanks for the feed back.
To be honest in my general style of playing, I normally stay back I rarely rush much becuase I consider it sometimes a waste of tickets, thus I mostly attack in Infantry squad that consist of a single 'hard push'. Yes i know it is a dangerous tactic, but when used properly like I have done as the PAC on Camp Gibby, the PAC can just use the cover on the Left or Right side and push up on the sides (not railways) and are fully protected from rockets to a certian degree, Only explosives I'd worry about are grenades but the barriers can deflect those. Instead of staying back, throwing grenades and waiting for some other squad to rush in my squad moved as one inside the area and dominated.
I cant remember who was in my squad at this time, but we attempted this twice while i was using an Assault (Mid Distance) and on the second push we overran Toll Station with ease and only suffered at least 7 castualies in our squad. Please Be Warned...

Re: Positions and Tactics
Great information. Staying back is a pretty good idea for a squad leader sometimes, even if your squad is being demolished no more than 50 yards away from you. It allows them to spawn right back on you when they die, and allows you as a SL to rethink your plan of action and try something new.

Re: Positions and Tactics
Great guide, and yea it's a good idea to stand back a little as SL, but then again you don't wanna have ur whole squad go on suicide runs while u sit back and attempt to take out reinforcments. Get involved, that's real teamwork
