    Re: The importance of Recon

I'll take a shot (ha) at adding something different -

Using the Recon kit as a squad leader has been discussed. Usually the camo is used by PAC on the linear maps like Fall of Berlin, to bypass the other team and cap a back flag. This is a good tactic, and fun to do (when it works...).

Recently I was in a squad with an SL who carried the Recon kit. He gave some explanation for his choice which was interesting. He wanted it mainly for the Recon helmet unlock. I believe when this is used with the Otus drone, it puts dots on the mini-map in addition to the diamonds in the HUD. Someone can correct or clarify this please. It works this way as long as you have a Recon in your squad - it doesn't have to be the SL, but there are other advantages to the Recon SL.

This SL was good with the stock sniper rifle on the move, and used the camo to hide and stay alive as a mobile spawn point. All-in-all it was pretty darned effective. I've been meaning to try it, but haven't yet. Any thoughts?

    Now, what about sniper squads?

It's always been my observation that snipers working in tandem can be devastating in situations like Camp G. It's a very rare squad make-up, but it can be really debilitating.

My opinion, from yet another thread about snipers.

I would love to see a pair of snipers do something good for their team. Please, prove me wrong.

There have been plenty of sniper teams that have made solid contributions to their teams. While they may not have dominated the battlefield or been able to steamroll over their opponents, these squads have certainly played a part in their teams’ successes. It would be great to see someone step up and provide the community with some suggestions about effectively running two-man sniper squads, rather than dismissing them altogether.

Personally, I hate that for a couple of reasons:

    1) When snipers snipe next to me...(no matter how good they are)...I sit there thinking.

"Who is this jackass and why is he next to me?"

Its like using a urinal in an empty bathroom and the next guy comes in and picks the one right next to you.

    2) I don't think i'm the only one with the problem in 1 sooo what it typically ends up with two snipers in the same "squad" acting almost independent of eatchother. While they are both following orders.....it pretty much boils down to lone-wolfing. There is really no "support" action taken by either member.

Basically. I think sniper squads are generally a poor idea.
    Shhhh I'm being made

    Re: The importance of Recon

I had an awful lot of fun in Tribes sniping with a buddy. The ruby laser pointer was the only weapon that could really hurt you at distance, since almost everything else took a long time to get where it was going or was wildly inaccurate. A headshot would kill, but in almost every instance your target was way above you so their head wasn't an option. Having my friend in the same room made it easy to coordinate shots before the development of VOIP. Those were good days.

2142 is a completely different game though, and being able to kill instantly from far away every 10 seconds or so just doesn't mean what it used to.

Too true, I used to feel the satisfaction of getting the headshot and seeing the target drop dead and stay dead. Now in the year 2142 they even have a cure for getting your brains blown out the back of your head. It's just not as fun, now that they could just get right back up again and keep running and/or shooting .
300 to 1? No problem. Might need more bullets though...

    Speaking of sniper usefullness.

On the scrim I devastated a squad that kept trying to sneak into our Titan. I used hidden RDX and sneaky APM-mines, and it wreaked havoc.

    Re: The importance of Recon

That would be RECON usefulness, unless you sniped them as well?

[TG] should stop being so selective by saying only "assualt medic". What if I want to be assault with rocket and shotgun? What if I want to be support with EMP and Dystek scanner?

    Re: The importance of Recon

That is a pretty blanket statment about |TG|. We have many accomplished support, engys, recons and snipers. You make us all sound like a bunch of assault, defib and rocket mongers. We are very well balanced with the scale tipping to assault medics a touch but our tactics and abilities speak for themselves. Open your eyes to the world of Team play and tactics and you will have a greater understanding of what we are all about. I would also suggest you take the time to read the required reading in my sig to have a better understanding what |TG| is all about.

There is one MASSIVE reason why Assault is the kit to play: To keep your team alive, which keeps your tickets up, then gives you extra fighting power, equalling a better chance at taking the flag, and in the end, you spend less time being dead and more time in the game. I can create a diagram in paint! <-- Teamwork!

If you want to go Rambo and score a bunch of kills if it means that much, then go pubbing!
