Re: Commander as an Asset
The single most important thing any commander can do and should always do: spot everything
you do not to to SatTrack to spot people, just right click and chose spot and there you goReapator, overlord of ponies

Re: Commander as an Asset
Fixed yer Haiku for ya.
Trying to do that more although the round of *cough* I was in and had decided to just up and practice sniping again I ended up with a 5/6 squad, an active CO who had a plan with my squad and one other as the spearhead. Heh, tried to communicate to the both my squad and the CO as best I could. Learned that B on SL goes to the CO.

Re: Commander as an Asset
What Reaper said.
There is a mechanical side and a social side to COing.
The mechanical side is rather short usually. Playe UAV, EMP, Orbital. But of course you can also spot people. Itīs a shame mass spotting creates a lot of noise if you havenīt turned of the commentary volume. But it often helps experienced soldiers way more than some words.
I go as far as saying spotting people as commander on hotspots when the UAV is down can be one of THE game deciding factors.
- Recon Rush? SPOT THAT GUY! Now visible to everyone he should fall soon
- Your Squad breaking thru toll being in hot area around ruins? SPOT THE ENEMIES! This will make minimap trained players 200% better.
There are 2 ways to Spotting:
- Zoom In: Zoom all the way in and spot each of those little ants out. This way you can catch everyone of that enemy Squad. The bad thing to this is that you lose the other areas out of your sight
-"Blind" Spot: You can spot on your map and if anything is in 15 ish pixels yuo will spot it. If nothing is there a questionmark will appear. If you found a guy spot around him in a triangle to "probe out" other players close to him

Re: Commander as an Asset
When I CO I always try to let the squads do their thing, and spot or place UAV's wherever they are headed. If I see something of interest, such as a hole in the enemy's defenses or a buggy rush, I announce it to the entire team, and then announce who is closest that I would like to react. That way, everyone knows what's going on.
Most of the time, I do not speak to a particular squad unless I want to talk about a strategy with them. Most of what I do is damage control, if a squad needs backup or something, and spotting for advancing and defending CO's. I drop orbitals/emp on walkers, and try to spot gunships as much as possible.
I have a similar style to Zhohar's CO'ing, and I see my main job for the SL's as providing up-to-the-second intel on enemy positions.

Re: Commander as an Asset
I enjoy being the commander, but I tend to be too chatty. Even to the point of having my wife on room over tell me to shut it the other night.
I think a good commander rocks everything.
On this server I plan to boss around tagless and then just let the experienced SLes with TG tags to run their squads and ask me for the support they need. Either way I try and use my assets to mold the battle.

I think I should learn how to be quiet too. You're not alone Link

Re: Commander as an Asset
Bah, as long as what you're saying is understandable and relevant to the game I think it's all good. I've been in your squads, squads with SL that talk about the weather, their favorite band, how their last batch of nachos is making 'em far and in squads there the SL talkedsodamnfastandsoquietyoucouldn'thearcrapunles syouturnedthegamesoundscompletelyoffandeventhenyou havetowaitfora *GAAAAAAAAAASP* breathtogetawordinedgewise. You're not the latter two so that puts you ahead of the curve.

Re: Commander as an Asset
Learn to use the V and B keys effectively:
V= Select a squad and press V to speak only to that Squad Leader. ( Pressing the actual number key of the squad you want will also select a specific squad)
B= Speak to the entire team
You can be an effective communicator by using these buttons effectively, get your message across to the squad that needs it without drowning out the other squads.|TG| RoadWarrior

Re: Commander as an Asset
I stick to B. Having the entire team know exactly who is doing what is nice. If a squad needs talking to (like the guy who was refusing orders and ran back to me and blew me up...) I'll go to V.

Re: Commander as an Asset
Having the team know what is going on is good. However, one thing you need to consider with this approach is that, as commander, you don't know how much squad chat is going on in each of your squads and you become another voice in the crowd. An overly chatty commander will overspeak on the squad members talking and confuses the SL.
On more than one occasion I have asked the CO to stop talking so much as I couldn't concentrate on my squad.

Re: Commander as an Asset
Agreed. Easy on the B, please. Most of the time, I'd rather hear what my SMs are saying than the CO unless it's pretty darn important. Even more to the point, I can't both listen and talk at the same time, so as a SL, I don't want to try to talk to my squad at the same time the CO is pressing B.
If you're spotting as much as you should, it makes much of the B type communication redundant. If it's a breakthrough on a map where this makes a big difference, by all means mention it. Otherwise, trust your SLs to be aware of their minimap.
