Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

The one with Rage is the better one. Almost all those dogfights are against top 100 pilots (Fast, Jaws8you, Roth140, Diry-Lex, Gigienzo, Soulzz). Plus it was a year later than the first one, so I got better by the time I made it lol. Oh and Tc^Meat is another TBG guy, was in the top 5 before he left for Iraq.

Sliding is a combination of hover and acceleration to make the gunship move backwards or sideways.

Your question depends on speed and which gunship you're flying. If you're in EU and going fast I'd just get out of there, if you're going slow then you're best bet is to try and spin the rockets off you. In Pac you should almost never be going fast enough to ditch a dog fight so stick it out and get really close to the enemy and try and dodge that way. Autocorrecting the rockets off is also an option, but unless you're really good at controlling the autocorrect I wouldn't recommend it.

@CTFalcon
Thanks for your explanations here. I've seen your video and found it very impressing.
Regarding your posts here, I've still got some questions:

1.

Could you please explain that a bit further.. I mean, hovering is done by pressing and holding "S", and acceleration but pushing "W". Pressing both keys at a time is contradicting, so I guess you mean something else, but what?

What is "autocorrection"? I have no clue.

3. Let's assume your'e taking off the PAC Titan in Suez and suddenly the EU-Gunship appears right infront of you. Both pilots spot them at the same time. How would you handle this situation?
The common reaction would be to activate your shields and fire all missiles you have. But except being a bit brainless, you normally lose this way with the PAC-ship.
Whats your advice?

Greetings, FF.

P.S. By the way, I see no harm if you'd "going off on a gunship dissertation". Good advice is always welcomed!

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

1. Sliding is mostly with the hover key, but for quick adjustments you sometimes have to hit the acceleration key.

2. Autocorrect is what I call it when the gunship snap rolls when you're turning at certain angles. I'm sure you've had it where you're upside down and trying to lift the nose and the gunship freaks out and bounces in some odd direction, that's autocorrecting.

3. This spot is tricky obviously lol. First things first you want to get some angle on him, you don't want your gunship pointed directly at his. Next you want to kill any forward momentum you have, a Pac ship moving at an EU ship will get ripped to pieces (shields or no shields). Now you have two options, burn your shields or don't lol. It depends on the angle of attack and how comfortable you are at being able to dodge rockets. If you can bank on dodging his rockets then do so, usually for me this means sliding towards his attack and off to the side a little while shooting my volley low and off to his opposite side. If you have to burn your shields then you need to do your best to make him pop his. Once you've survived that initial pass get in tight with his gunship. The key in this spot is your rocket targeting, unless his gunship isn't moving or presents itself broadside you should never shoot directly at it, always intentionally place your rockets off his ship so they can turn into him (that's a general rule of thumb, there's so many different scenarios and they each have a specific area you should be targeting).

Hope that makes sense, there's just so many different things that play into a dog fight that it's impossible to make a guideline for how to win one lol.

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Hello CTFalcon,

thanks, this helped a lot, especially what you said about shooting not at the target but on the opposite side. I'll try this out!

In the given scenario you said that "you want to kill any forward momentum". I see the point with the PAC-Shield at high speed, but doesn't that cause another problem: zero speed will make me a "sitting duck" so "getting in tight with his gunship" will only work if he kills his airspeed too. I ask, because I made the experience that always when I lost speed I ended up "parking" in the air, frantically looking around unable to spot the enemy (and getting killed shortly after :-) ).

I've got another question regarding your video ("CTFalcon Battlefield 2142 Gunship Solo Dogfights"). At 1:55 min you are chasing a Talon and he does this move again, that looks like beeing reflected by an invisible wall. I've seen this live on a server and tried to mimick it, but it doesn't work. They all seem to fly strait up, get a bit inverted and then doing "something" that makes them bounce this way. What is that? All I could achieve where some very small relocations, but what I've seen some people can "beam" them over distances of about 20m.. Do I need special hardware for this.. ?

Thanks in advance, FF.

That is what "autocorrection" is, when the GS just bounces in a random direction. Its a glitch in the game's mechanics I think.

Well if you want specific questions then heres two. How exactly do you skid sideways? Do you hover and left/right? Im pretty comfortable with it now so what sensitivity should I set it to? Also, if I up the sensitivity, then won't that allow me to podserf? (I hate podsurfing so Im not going to do it!)

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

I'm fairly positive pod surfing is impossible after the most recent patch, but I could be wrong on that.

As to sensitivity I can't make a suggestion, it's just whatever you're comfortable with. I fly with maxed sensitivities just because that's what I got used to, Fast on the other hand flies with default.

Sliding sideways is a combination of hover, left/right key and your mouse.

Autocorrection is really difficult to control, I still screw it up all the time. To get the nose to flip over like you saw just invert and lift the nose up pretty quickly, it usually will snap over for you.

What exactly does sliding look like in action? Dropping to one side or another? Or something else?

About the same thing as you would run forward and press strafe left/right as a infantery-soldier.

And sliding allows you to dodge missiles, but what if your enemy does this? You just won't be able to hit him? Is there any way to get him while he is doing this (other than the TV missile of course).
Also, what is the best way to get good at solo-piloting? Aim at ground targets and deal with enemy gunships normally, or use TVMs on them too?

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

There's no be all and end all to dogfighting maneuvers, I've just found that in some situations the sideways movement of the gunship can dislodge rockets.

As for getting good at soloing I recommend getting good at flying and TV'ing separately then gradually introducing solo shots into your game.

Cool, thanks. What I've been doing is just creating local games and nuking the armor that spawns in the uncaps, but that can't really compare to moving targets and especially the lag on various servers.

@Deterhek

Sliding doesn't allow you to get rid of ALL enemy missiles, just a certain percentage as far as I experienced. But I'm still a gunship-apprentice..

Regarding soloing, the method of testing it on a local server and practising on the spawning vehicles worked fine for me. You get the key sequence "wired" in your brain and develop a feeling how much time you have.
The suez PAC base has everything you need. You can even practise soloing with the MG - the Jeep is best suited for that.
One difference to a real server is the delay when switching to gunner and further to TV rocket. Depending on the server it will cost additional time.
