Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Lately I've been noticing that my piloting skills are being needed more and more and I guess im competent but If I'm up against someone who really knows what they are doing then I usually get destroyed. Before anyone says anything related to "You have to practice, practice, practice, practice!" I get it, but I need some tips like how to do barrel rolls or other evasive maneuvers. I was also wondering about changing vehicle sensitivity and if so, to what degree? Thanks!

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

There are quite a few threads dealing with this already. The top pilots are using v.sensitive mouse settings. You can also use arrow keys. If you want to understand evasive maneuvers, jump in a gunship and flip upside down, then try and right yourself. Basically flip every which way you can think of, and you'll start to understand what you can do in a dogfight.

Tip: Full power and nose down (Arrow-up or Mouse forward) is crucial.

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

I made this just for personal use/reference on Word (I know, total dork) so it may be a bit hazy, but you should get the general ideas.
FAKE-OUT:
FLY UP HIGH (200+ FEET), BAIL OUT OF THE GS, WAIT FOR IT TO FALL BACK AND THEN WHEN WANTED ENTER THE GS AGAIN. DON’T LET THE GS HIT YOU HARD WHEN FALLING OR IT WILL KILL YOU.

QUICK TURN:
PRESS ARROW KEY TO GO WHATEVER WAY YOU WANT, BUT AT THE SAME TIME ANGLE THE MOUSE OTHER WAY TO TURN SO THAT BOTTOM OF GS IS ANGLED TOWARD CENTER OF TURN.

LOOPING:
FLY UP, THEN ANGLE MOUSE SO THAT YOU COME AROUND IN A FULL LOOP. FOR LOWER ALTITUDE LOOPS CUT POWER WHEN FULLY UPSIDE DOWN. DUH!

FLYING UPSIDE DOWN:
FLY UP TO 100+ FEET, FORCE GS INTO UPSIDE DOWN POSITION (EITHER BY DOING HALF-LOOP OR OTHERWISE) ANGLE MOUSE SO THAT YOU SEE THE SKY, CONTINUE FLYING. TO RIGHT GS ANGLE MOUSE FARTHER UP TO YOU ARE RIGHT SIDE UP. TO TURN GS ANGLE MOUSE TO SIDE WITHOUT ENDING UP COMPLETELY UPSIDE DOWN.

FAKEOUT LOOP:
GO UP 300+ FEET WHEN BEING DIRECTLY FOLLOWED, BEGIN DOING LOOP BUT STAY UPSIDE DOWN FOR 100 FEET AND COME DOWN, THE FOLLOWER WILL HAVE THOUGHT THAT WHEN YOU STARTED THE LOOP YOU WOULD HAVE DONE IT IMMEDIATELY AND BEGAN GOING BACK DOWN TO EARTH, LOSING YOU IN THE FOG.

FAKEOUT LOOP VARIATION:
WHEN BEING DIRECTLY FOLLOWED GO UP 300+ FEET, GO UPSIDE DOWN BUT FLY UPSIDE DOWN FOR 100+ FEET AND THEN COME UP FARTHER, GIVING YOU HIGHER ALTITUDE AND MAKING THEM LOSE YOU IN THE FOG.
You always want to be behind your enemy ideally. Coming from above also works well.
Tip: When you have to reload while you and your enemy are in close proximity, just head straight up and start looping around and stuff, anything to keep them off your back.
Tip: When you think you're in danger of crashing, just remember that as long as you have your nose pointed towards the sky you at least won't lose any altitude so long. as you keep that positions sustained.
There are lots of things that I haven't mentioned here or thought about, just improv is good.

Another good way to find stuff out (This is how I found all my tips out) is just by going on Youtube and Google Videos and typing in BF2142 Gunship...tips/moves/tactics.
Pay close atttention to any video you see that mentions the names AFeX^ (the clan's real name) or AFEX (the misspelling). They are probably the best Gunship clan out there. Top people there are KnifeOwnage, Crazy_Horze, and MillWall_UK and they appear in most of the videos. All three are in the top 100 Gunship category on the EA website I believe.
Sorry, ranting on here, but you could also ask some of the 11th about tricks and moves, the AIR are deadly.
Hope this helps

Beware the lightpost for it has caused the untimely end to more pilots then anything else.

You reckon you could pull that off?

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Oooohhhhh yeah. I get SOOOO lucky that way. Maybe for someone who doesn't think by now that they're being protected by every deity in existence, then you should go up a little higher, but I have done it before. I believe my lowest on record was 130 feet or so when I bailed, but I got back in at about 30 feet and JUST pulled up in time to survive.
Note: MUCH easier to do with the Doragon, the EU just doesn't have enough of something to get it parell to the ground, it aalways just nose-dives when I try and it's much harder to get back in that way. Best bet is to get under the bottom of the nose and keep mashing E. It'll work eventually.
One more thing: for general cruising altitudes stick to 2-3 hundred feet. Your on the very brink of the fog on most maps, AAs don't look there as much (they mostly follow the horizon), you can see enemy armor and spot it easily, and you are above some, if not most of the enemy gunships (I have found anyways).

If someone is in an AA or is carrying a SAAW, they will take any shot they can get because they are probably bored out of their minds. AA looks up!

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Hmm, I'm not sure I agree. The only times I can think of as being shot down/EMPed by an AA or SAAW were when I was below the fog. The AAs sights cannot penetrate (see through I mean) the fog so you're relatively safe there. Then again, you probably have WAY more experience so I'll just back down here :P

DrBeat is one of the nicest people in TG so it would be very hard to disagree with her

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Gotta disagree with naming Afex the best gunship clan out there, I'll put in plug for TBG. As far as tips are concerned, don't worry about sensitivity until you get comfortable flying the thing. Work on dodging rockets in dog fights and conserving your shields, very important in a tough situation. Just get on the field and play against good pilots, it's really the only way to get better.

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Cool to have someone in the EA top 5 (your number...3 I think, am I right?) comment here.
Yes, TBG is also awesomely awesome, I just have seen more AfeX vids so I jumped to the conclusion that they're the best, because they do so many of them. I've only seen a few TBG vids, so no offence I hope.
Man, I ca't imagine a TBG VS AfeX gunship-only battle. That would be epic.
Dodging rockets you say? How exactly is that done, just by getting out of their tracking range?

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Afex probably has more "good" pilots than we do, but I'd have to say we have the three best (Fast, Tc^Meat and myself in some order) in my biased opinion lol. Fast and I have scrimmed Idris, I think you know him as Crazy Horse, and his gunner Millwall and have beaten them all four times we did it. I scrimmed Idris and Millwall with Soulzz gunning for me and beat him 7-1 and 7-4.

Anyways lol, dodging rockets... I'm not talking about veering out the way to cause them to never track, I'm talking about being able to shake them off you when they're tracking. Obviously this is easier done in the EU ship but it can also be done with Pac. Without going into way too much detail the best way to do it is usually to slide sideways in some fashion or another. If you have a specific question I'd love to help out, I just want to avoid going off on a gunship dissertation (which I would do without specific questions lol).

Oh and about vids, I have two and Fast has two up. My first one was kind of horrible, so I'd suggest you ignore that one... If you want to see the second one search "CTFalcon battlefield 2142 gunship," on youtube. The good one was put up in May I think.

Re: Gunship Piloting Tips Please

Cool, yeah I saw that Crazy_Horze's youtube name is Idris. I've never heard of Tc^Meat before though.
TBG certainly has quite a few of the really good gunship pilots in BF though, I think I've flown with Soulzz before and I know Fast is the top in the world.
What exactly do you mean by "sliding" though? Just dropping to one side or another?
Also, I typed in what you said to but there are still 2 videos. Is the good one the one with "Killing in the Name" (Rage Against the Machine) playing? Or is it the other one? They both seem pretty dang good, better than 99.9% of the pilots out there would be able to do.
First question: in a 1vs1 dogfight what would you consider the best way to avoid getting killed when you are reloading both shields and rockets? Sliding to "dodge" them or just getting out of their line of fire?
