    Marking Targets

I was playing on a pubbie highway tampa server a few days ago and I saw something very interesting, there was a squad the was being pinned down behind a large grouping of rocks by another squad. Im not sure what they said but someone in that squad threw a smoke grenade in the middle of the squad that was firing on them. Meanwhile im sitting in my snipers post going HUH? but they kept throwing smoke grenades into that same spot then after a minute a transport ship and gunship pop out of nowhere and start annihilating that area of smoke. Then I realized they were using the smoke as a marker for the ships and so the squad on the ground couldn't see who was shooting at them. This got me thinking about any other ways to use marking, be it smoke, the "move to" command beeping thing, or anything else that sticks out to coordinate "air strikes" or artillery bombardments from tanks.
Any other ideas on how to use this concept to a teams advantage?

Very nice find, hellface. A similar tactic I've seen is to mark a specific target by 'spotting' an air transport or tank in the area to be attacked... Although that only works if there otherwise wouldn't be that vehicle on that given map.

Another plus to using smoke to signal an aircraft is you an also use it organize a evac from a hot zone. pop smoke, transport dives down, squad gets in, regroups, then retaliates.

Then again you could always just type over the team-chat "Squad blahblah needs blahblah support, or if the people in the airtrans are on TeamSpeak you could use that too.

The move command and spot functions are not limited by throwing distance, can be accessed through the caps-lock map, are more precise, and do not give away your location. Teamspeak, a move marker, and a good commander will certainly serve equally well or better than replacing a rocket-wielding soldier with one that carries smoke.

The SL can carry smoke, he doesn't need rockets. Also, no one reads team chat in game (as proved on many occasions), and only your own squad can see move markers. The smoke signals real only drawback is that it draws attention to yourself as well.

Yes that is true, but by using smoke in combination with a gunship for example, it causes disorientation among those in the smoke because not only can they not see where the shots are coming from, they are also going to have a considerable amount of trouble trying to revive their teammates and return fire. If they decide to leave the smoke they become even easier targets for a ground squad and the co-pilot of the gunship.

Or you can use your rifle rockets. Whenever I'm a gunner in a gunship or driving a tank or using an APC mortar I fire at the area people are shooting at with rockets. Rockets are easy to see, leave a nice smoke trail to follow, and are actually useful for other things.

Vehicle gunners should be in the habit of lobbing shells or firing at spots that the infantry is shooting at. If a Ganz is lighting up a balcony, that probably means hes suppressing some infantry. So shoot the tank shell. A friendly assault gunner may not have the greatest angle for his rifle rockets, but a gunship run guided by the airbursts might kill the enemy in question.

If you're infantry, and you have a weapon that is easily visible, then shoot it at enemies you can't kill yourself. I shoot the guided engy rockets at squads moving through cover for example, not to kill them, but to point out to teamates where the enemy is. Ammo is cheap, use it.

Or you could spot. It's true that it's not always going to spot the enemy if they're behind cover, but if you match it with words it should... and if you really think the gunship/transport is coordinated enough to act on smoke (which lasts a very brief period of time), then they'll be able to act on false spots.

Gunship and Transport shots actually kick up a lot of smoke if they are firing accurately. Also, finding yourself enveloped in smoke is not necessarily as disruptive as getting rocketed or Gunship-ed or Transport-ed to death.

They may notice if you repeatedly say it while in caps-lock. I've gotten the COs attention by doing that before.

You have a very good point merc, Im with you on that one. I was trying to point out that being under fire while visibility is reduced is disorienting and distracting.
