the squad bacon
For a long time, the SL having an otus was pretty much a must have item. Over time tactics have evolved. When I put up an otus, I can feel the pressure. I am a huge target because it is clear that I am squad leading. I find myself using the otus rarely now.
Which gets me thinking, perhaps its time to fry up some bacon. Very few SLs use the squad beacon. I suspect this is often because most SLs play aggressively and mobile and beacons can be camped. But I am not sure we have thought deeply enough about thier use.
The most effective use I have had was as a "defensive" beacon that we spawn on only when we lose a particular flag.

Re: the squad bacon
I normal cringe every time I find myself spawning on a beacon ....
But I have seen Fran use beacons to great affect. Generally he'll place one down in some obscure spot with an IDS near it and insist no one use it. Then if the flag gets taken he tells everyone to hold spawn until just when the enemy has started to shift to another flag. 80% of the time we'll get the flag back. Its pretty neat to have 6 guys all podding down at once and start tearing the place up. I guess the key to his strategy really is timing, self control of the SMs, and situational awareness.

Re: the squad bacon
the only maybe way I would use a beacon was defensively. but even then someone will eventually find it and they'll destroy it or worse camp it.
in my squad you will never see me use a beacon because if they see it and camp it, you will lose valuable tickets. sure you can stop spawing on it but then your squad will have a major flaw seeing as they dont have their SL as a spawn point anymore.
I see some SL's using beacons more often now, maybe to test it out or something, but the facts stay the same, beacons are not that usefull

Re: the squad bacon
#1. I love bacon.

Other then that, I typically carry the beacon, but I don't often use an SL item. The beacon does have its uses (back-up spawn point), but to me, the risk of having it camped or left up without the ability to spawn on the SL is ever present. Even if implemented defensively, the squad must have good discipline to prevent spawning on it.
It has its time and place, just not most of the time.

Re: the squad bacon
My biggest beaf with the bacon is the fact that I can no longer have SM's spawning on me as a squad leader. I'm a very mobile squad leader and lose SM's while they are still alive, I don't need to have them spawning all over the place to go with that. I believe it is a tool that only works with certain play styles, mine not being one.

Re: the squad bacon
Well using beacon is ok for maybe one drop or two in rare case but that's it. More then that normally result in massive camping of the said beacon. I personally prefer otus or even nothing at all to beacon though.

Re: the squad bacon
It certainly does apply to an individual's squad leading style. However, there can be some unintended and nasty consequences when used against intelligent and experienced adversaries.
Example.
Last evening, an SL assaulting Com Tower (Belgrade) placed a beacon in the rocks west of the flag. When the beacon was found, rather than destroying it, the defending squad placed an ammo hub on top of it.
For those who don't know what this means, it makes the beacon un-spawnable. It does not, however, destroy the beacon. Because the beacon is alive and un-spawnable the enemy squad could not spawn anywhere except on flags (and they had precious few of those at the time).
Moral.
Use beacons with caution. I am sure that when used rightly, they can be very effective. But they are a screwdriver. An otus is a hammer. Don't use a screwdriver when you need a hammer, and likewise reversed.

Re: the squad bacon
I use the bacon for 2 reasons: rare siege attacks and an occasional defensive secondary spawn point...
I forgot that the trolls love bacon...

Re: the squad bacon
I can usually be heard swearing out loud after spawning green and realizing it's a beacon and not the SL I just spawned on. It seems that more often than not there's a warm enemy welcome waiting for me at ground level. Even when this is the case some SL's will insist that we "keep spawning the beacon". This is when I find a new squad. The rest of your team is being done a great disservice having their tickets eaten up in this manner.
Once a beacon has been discovered by the bad guys and they choose to camp it, the only chance of not pissing tickets away and overwhelming them is a coordinated spawn of multiple pods dropping at roughly the same time(minus the brief instance the spawn is red), not one every 3-5 seconds.

Re: the squad bacon
I don't think having an otus over your head is correlated to being shot more.
If an enemy sees you and thinks he can make a kill (and sometimes when he can't make the kill) he's gonna shoot you anyway, regardless of your officer status. The game is too fast to be focusing on shooting "high priority targets"
The only problem I see with it is that your body is likely to eat more nades if you go down and your enemy knows for sure you're a SL (given he's smart enough to cover your body).
