Battle Walker guide

http://bf2142fever.com/content/Battl...er_Pilot_Guide

For all those who just can get a handle on how they they work or how come they cant seem to get the missiles to hit anything. Very good read.

Re: Battle Walker guide

I think that the walker's ability to teabag is its greatest attribute

Good to know. I never could hit a thing with those anti-air missles.

Good read. I did not know that you could sprint or crouch in a Walker!

Re: Battle Walker guide

What's also interesting is I learned a technique, from the computer!, on how to take a Walker down (if the walker driver isn't smart..Apparently me!). While I was testing the unlocks in a new mod someone made which lets you try all the unlocks, the AI hover tank came straight at me, threw its shields on, so my rockets bounced off, then strafed right past me (the AI always kept the front of the tank facing me) and went behind me. I underestimated the AI and ignored the tank for the enemy walker that was infront of me. My Walker was at full health, or really close, and this AI tank did one shot in my rear and I blew up. I was sitting there shocked that a BF AI just out smarted me.

So, it may not work so well when it's one tank vs Walker because a smart walker would stay facing you..but if he's busy on something more dangerous than you or you have two tanks attacking, swing one behind his rear and shoot it up the butt.

I've also found that shooting the AT unlock at a walker's front does maybe 1/4th damage if that, but if you hit him in the rear it does 1/2 or more! It's almost pointless to attack a walker from the front.

The only one-shot kill you can get on a walker is in the grill and it is highly unlikely a tank could have the trajectory to hit you there. More likely the other walker was also firing its rockets and the tank just finished you off at the same time. 1 vs. 2 when flanked isn't going to be pretty in anyone's book.

At close range, a walker will 9/10 beat a tank, due to the fact that you can hit with all 4 rockets in one salvo. As a walker operator, you should always charge a tank as close as possible with shields on and crouch-fire your rockets. The flatter trajectory with the crouch is far more effective. Also, not many walker pilots use the crouch ability, so tank drivers often get surprised by it and overshoot your torso when you do so. One shot missed for the tank means death.

Another thing people may not know is that you don't need to wait for the full salvo to recharge before firing more rockets. You can fire them one at a time as soon as your first four have been launched. In a tight situation, this can make all the difference against a novice opponent. Also take note of the guide's reference to which side the rockets are fired from. I have better success if I turn the side which the rocket will fire from ever so slightly towards the target, so the missile fires straight instead of requiring the homing action.

Re: Battle Walker guide

Granted in my situation the tank alone may not have taken me out, it is still the best way to take a walker out. All too often do I see 2 tanks or tank/apc standing next to each other and firing straight at the walker. The tank, or one tank, should always swing behind the walker and hit it in the rear. And according to this guide, the tank should hit the walker in the legs and where the legs meet the torso.

The guide mentions if you 'hold' the secondary fire button that you'll shoot 6 rockets. I've only ever fired 4 rockets as you said, but I would individually press the fire button instead of hold. I'll try the holding next time and see if it is 6 instead of 4.

I read that guide in its entirety and saw nothing about which side the rockets fire from. So which side do the rockets fire from?

Hmm, maybe I just superimposed my experience into the guide.

The rockets alternate left to right from memory, but don't quote me on that. They work much like Attack Heli rockets in BF2, except they are homing. So, if you turn the side which fires the next rocket slightly towards your target, you decrease the need for the homing feature and it is much more likely to hit.

Re: Battle Walker guide

At most distances you don't really need to worry about the rockets since they are homing. But the missiles fire from either side and without guidance converge at a point about 50 yards ahead of the walker; at a distance they've often diverged enough that the homing doesn't work. Adjusting your aim to the left and right give you much more range and lets you plink away at an enemy walker from a distance while his rockets are (probably) missing you. The rockets do alternate sides, so adjust to the opposite side that you first shot misses, then shift from side to side with each shot.

Don't try to outsnipe a tank this way though. Tanks can zoom in with their main gun and aim for your weak spots, and they can duck for cover while waiting to reload.

With regards to waiting for them to cool down- don't fire bursts unless you absolutely have to. Firing at a slower rate gives you a chance to adjust your aim, and you aren't stuck with overheated weapons if another threat shows up. And like all things in Battlefield, when you 'overheat' something, it takes longer to cooldown than normal, so you get a lower average ROF if you spam them.

Great tips, I didn't know about crouch or firing before the recharge. Note for those that don't pilot them much that holding shift puts the walker into a run mode as well.

Re: Battle Walker guide

I actually bound my vehicle sprint key to my mouse thumb button. It's easier to steer and sprint at the same time.

Question Re: Battle Walker guide

Can you double tab the "W" key and sprint in the Walker as you can on foot?
