Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
One time just for fun the whole squad of six went Support with IPS/Sentry setups and we made the following barracade that lasted a decent amount of time (eventually we got destroyed by continuous orbital strikes but it was fun killing infantry - we just stayed behind all the sentrys and shields just lobbing grenades - I think we placed it at toll booth on gibralter).. its a novelty anyway...
*=sentry ..... _ or | = IPS shield ... 0 = soldier

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
I'm going to be doing some testing of sentry turrets today. I read over at bf2142fever that the turret itself has a 50 degree cone of fire. Couple that information and the fact of its huge range and more than a few locations come to mind. I recall a few days ago on carebear landing the whole team going up the street on the initial rush was cut down by several spread out turrets.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Yes the sentry gun's range is very very good - especially if a team member's netbat is nearby giving the gun enemy position updates - BUT remember that it's damage loss over distance ratio is very very high so close up it takes about as many shots to the body to kill as an assault machine gun but at a greater difference it's extremely weak and several shots may not do much of anything. Another weak point to the gun is it's decision making on aquiring targets - it acquires targets based on who is closer to the sentry (this seems like a decent rule), however what happens most often is that infantry come running up to it and it starts hitting the closest guy and he ducks for cover, then it re-acquires a new guy running up then he gets damaged and ducks for cover and heals.. this keeps happening until the whole enemy squad is up to it and it never actually kills anyone before it is destroyed.. its just very weak against multiple targets - you have to use it more as a 'speed bump' maybe down an alley that is to your back that you are not watching so that the enemy will become a blip on the radar (map) to warn you rather than relying on it to kill.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
bump for noobs like me

any other tips/tricks? So is it confirmed that it can shoot up and down a little? it's not firing on a flat plane right?
One thing damonte pointed out is that they shoot at cloaked recon soldiers - so they can be used to detect/stop infiltrations.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
A mate of mine uses it in places where he hopes the enemy will run past it without seeing it and then it starts to fire and shoots them in the back. Gives the sentry a head start and first blood! He's got a kdr of 7.98 with that turret!
Also, if the sentry is firing and you are not, you should be resupplying so you can drop another one and keep up the pressure when the first one is destroyed. Turret, IDS and shotty is his recipe for mayhem!

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
You can place it on top of some of the stationary vehicles also. This gives it great range and many people do not look up. I pace it around corners, drop it when I am running to help cover my back. When attacking, I place it and then move to attack from a diffeent angle. It draws attention and fire to the sentry and my squad can flank while they are focused on the sentry.
Placed on top of hills it shoots down on the approaching infantry. It does shoot cloaked soldiers. It is also a good "detector" because if fires often before you see the enemy.
The sentry, however, is often unreliable...never count on it to save you. Consider it a soldier with ADHD.
Add a recon to you squad to better utilize the Netbat and the sentry will engage a little better.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Cover is good, also there alre some of those ''visually invisible spots'' in this game even with low graphic. Scored 2 kills yesterday by placing sentry gun into flames where no1 could see it

Bushes on Cerbere, bigger bushes on Tunis, especially those east of Power give excellent cover. And yeah if you can work with the sentry, well, it is VERY good distraction. Not into too open.
Perfect spot would be: Behind tiny cover, with wide arc on open area, and in best case infantry has no visual on the sentry until its too close = dead

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
I find that the sentry targeting system takes too long to lock onto the bad guys. In most cases you'll be lucky to land one or two shots before they can run/jump out of the way. To counter this study some of the maps ahead of time and look for areas that funnel the enemy into kill zones that they can't easily get out of - alleys between buildings heading to flags, hallways, etc.
If you can better ensure that they can't get out of the firing arc, you'll have a good chance at brining them down.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Some good tips. Maybe I'll start swapping out my distraction grenades, I mean EMP grenades in favor of the sentry gun.
I was only able to get kills with it on the titan interior.
