Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Title says it all. I havent found really good places to put this thing and half the time it gets me killed while I deploy it. My best strategy to date is to hide it behind the foliage which still alows it to fire while blocking from site. Any help would be nice.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Hey John,
Check out the link below to a thread on totalbf2142 and the sentry gun.
http://www.totalbf2142.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=11672
I'm still getting used to the sentry gun as well - often, I even forget I'm carrying it. It doesn't do a lot of killing on its own but it makes a great supression / area denial tool.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
I've found that placing it on the titan gets the most number of kills. Placing it at one of the corners on the upper level outside is especially effective because when enemy dudes pod onto the titan, there is a short delay (can't see anything plus you have to wait for the pod leaves to fall away) so the sentry can start to pounce right away. Main thing about sentrys don't put them in the middle of an open area - they only have about a 50 degree horizontal horizon (someone correct me here I'm not sure) but anyway it cannot rotate very far to scope out and aquire targets so best is to point them straight from the corner of a wall where that wall is hard to get behind. One really fun thing I do is go inside the cargo bay at the very end where the small room with the window is and point it straight down the hall because it lets me know when enemies drop down the vent into the titan because it starts trying to shoot them through the wall, then I just start lobbing grenades at the end of the hall - works like a charm, got two titan defender awards in one round with this tactic.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
I like to put it at the top of ladders so the enemy is already getting shot before they have a chance to pull out there weapon. Just make sure it is not to close to the ladder or they will jump right over it and destroy it. It also works really well in hallways. Another good thing about it is that it is very destracting so I like to place it somewhere and while the enemy is trying to figure out where the shoots are coming from I can flank them. But like you I get killed a lot while I am deploying it.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
It's also good as a get away device - I've been in situations where I got ambushed by three or more dudes all of the sudden and I'm the only one on my team in the area.. I quickly run around a corner and place the sentry eyeing that corner then I back up and keep running around the building/corner and I can hear (and see on the map) the dudes who are encountering the sentry - usually they will not die from it but it does indicate where the enemy is just long enough for me to either manuever in to kill them or know what escape paths out of the area are viable while they are dealing with the sentry.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Try combining it with a Gun Drone.
Move up behind some cover and drop the sentry where it can shoot the enemy players you'll be shooting at. Between you, the sentry and the drone you'll be packing a lot of firepower into your corner. Once you're done grab the sentry gun and go for the next position.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Defensively, I'll usually place it right around a corner. Usually ~45-90° from the edge. Making sure it's looking at the flag/silo, or a commonly used alley, of course.
I usually use the sentry gun more for its ability to spot enemies than its ability to kill them, however. They're weak and don't last long, but can give you the intel that'll give you the edge in killing that one guy coming around the corner.

Agreed, it's great on maps like Tunis Harbor where it can spot enemies way down a road, go prone in another position not near your gun and it will give them away allowing you to fire and kill them.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
My ideal spot in Berlin is the alley just down in the norther ice wall. The sentry gun nets me 15 kills in one sitting. The tight and straight alley makes the most out of the drone saturated rate of fire. I was confident enough to leave the gun on its own to guard the other passage.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Yep, I die all the time waiting for that damn sentry gun to deploy - wish it would finish even when I'm dead and maybe take revenge for me. I also use it as a spotter, I thought this latest patch had fixed it's attempts to shoot through walls but it seems not. I get few kills out of it, but it is sometimes fun on Gibraltar or other CQC maps to be in the back of a jeep with the sentry gun ready and toss it out as you zip past a bunch of enemy grunts...
If you deploy it where it can cover a corner or alley mouth, but far enough away that it's not just shooting the walls, you can position yourself on the opposite side of the angle and get your kills while they are trying to destry the sentry gun....

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
Just don't rely too heavily on it because it only takes two shots from the Zellar sniper rifle to take it out - of course, you will probably die first from the snipers fire then your beloved sentry; usually takes all but 12 seconds to take out a support setup like this...

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
I use it to great effect in Camp Gib. I like to place it about 2/3 the way up the east catwalk aimed for the western catwalk first corner. That means it'll fire on the building closest to the catwalk, the western ladder and the catwalks leading to the wall. Might not kill anyone but I know they are there long before I see them.

Re: Looking for Tips/hints on sentry placement
I use them on roofs and the like a lot, if the roof has small edge that goes down (sloped) before it goes straight down, I ALWAYS lay them there. It causes their line of sight/fire to aim down into the ground and it gives them a major advantage. I once placed one on a sloped edge facing an entrance and it massacred the enemy before they found it. Also, put it close to a shield, but not behind it can help avoid some additional damage.
