Engineer Unlocks
I am satisfied with my assault kit atm, which is what I use most of the time, however, I am now working on my engineer kit since it seems once is always needed. I was wondering which of the advanced unlock weapons is best for taking out enemy armor.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Go for the Pilum chain of unlocks first. Then unlock all but the SAAW (anti-air). You can then do a field upgrade for the SAAW.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Personally, I think you (or anyone) should go up the right branch first, but not all the way up. The left branch gives you the Pilum, which is nice in certain situations, but the right branch gives you the motion mines, which are always great and give you a completely new capability.
Pilum > default rocket

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Does the anti-air rockets do less damage then regular rockets to land armor?

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Nothing to add, but agree with the above. Motion mines are the best unlock on the engi tree and the MANPAD is only useful on Titan servers.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Motion mines are AWESOME. I would recommend unlocking motion mines and leaving the SAAW. I personally left both lvl 4s un-...unlocked?, and use field upgrade to get them. You can use rockets pretty much any time, but the Pilum requires a closer range and better aim. The Pilum isn't a railgun, it's more like a rocket that flies in a straight line. Faster than the rockets, and you don't need to guide it, but it deviates greatly at long range.

Tearing structurally-superfluous new behinds with high caliber weapons since 2006.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Pretty much everyone here seems to agree that if you are going to play engineer ... You will need to have both sides unlocked up to the SAAW. I went up the Pilum side first but not having motion mines is frustrating if your playing that kit.. and I could also see it being equally frustrating to have motion mines but not have the Pilum but I guess if I could do it all over again, I wouldve gone up the right side of the tree first. That seems to be the more logical way to go since you still atleast have an AntiVehicle gun at your disposal.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
The motion mines are definitely useful - I went up the left side of the tree as well and kind of wish I had motion mines as well as EMP's.
What I really wanted though wasn't even the Pilum H-AVR - it was the PDS-1 vehicle sensor. I haven't used this post 1.10 but I am very eager to give it a try.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
The Pilum is definitely great but not essential. Every engineer needs motion mines and in most cases the defuser. I always felt that the defuser would be useless, but it extrodinarily handy when your stuck surrounded by enemy motion mines.
The Pilum is definitely a mid-close range weapon (as mentioned by Lokismischief). The best feature about the Pilum is the enemy doesn't hear the lock-on tone when you aim at them. Very useful for getting those stealth rear shots on tanks.
The SAAW itself is really only useful on gunships. It takes two shots to kill a gun ship and four shots to kill a transport ship. Since you only get two rounds per mag (which is odd since the EU AT launcher has 4 rocket barrels) you have to reload and fire again to take the transport down (by that time it usually gone). There's also a weird lock on bug with the SAAW against transports that causes you not to lock on (not sure if 1.1 fixed this or not).
So to repeat what was already said, to be a successful engineer you need motion mines and to a lesser extent the Pilum.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
That is my same feeling. I didn't unlock the PDS-1 for a long time but when I did it seems like a great tool. Unfortunately, I realized it was bugged and I'm hoping to use it more now that it's been fixed.
Motion mines are really good to have. Playing engineer, you have one item choice because you're always going to take motion mines. I recommend this path first since the default rockets are fine. In fact, you may not even like the Pilum since it requires a very different play style. It might be a shock to use the Pilum after playing hours with the guided rockets.

Re: Engineer Unlocks
Hmm, I must be missing something because I've never gotten a lock tone with the regular launcher. How do you get a lock on?
