Re: A Guide to Commanding
right. but he was suggesting waiting on capturing the flag. i think capturing as quickly as possible is the only way to go.

Re: A Guide to Commanding
The best piece of information I got from this was actually:
"Remember, highlight a squad and then press V to only talk to that squad leader."
I know it sounds rediculous but I hadn't actually known this before. I thought I was forced to use the B key and talk to all my squads at once. I imagine that got really annoying for some of my suqad leads. THANK YOU for this info as petty and easy to find out as it may seem, its the most important thing. I'm going to have to comm in a game tomorrow (no time tonight) and see how that works out.
The other key thing i'll be taking away from this is telling my squad leads what to do without telling them how to do it. I know i'm very VOIP heavy in games, i'm sure you guys have noticed that by now. Im working on being more concise (is that the word?) but we will see how that goes.
Good recap, you covered everything I could have thought to mention - if I think of something else though I wont be far.

Re: A Guide to Commanding
Same here, just because 1 of your 6 squad members is shooting them doesnt mean the other 5 knows where.
I blame this on EVERYONE. If you are shooting someone SPOT THEM FOR GOD'S SAKE. That way your squad mates, and team mates can see them on the radar. That and the CO doesnt have to spot them.
p.s. I use spotted alot too. Sorry guys. I will try and be better about speaking to ONLY the squads that need to hear me, but in the heat of the battle sometimes it is faster/easier to tell squad 2 they are being flanked with B then V.Battlefield 2: Battlefield 2142: WoW: Oblivion: NWN2

Re: A Guide to Commanding
The only reason it is a good idea to wait to capture it is so that you can cap fast and easy since nobody will really be defending if there is a huge fight at the choke points near the uncappable. If you try and rush straight out at the opening of the round you will encounter a hell of a lot of resistance (people are still deciding where to spawn and defenders are watching for rushers who try to get deep on the map early). The key is to go unnoticed in a group and hide for a while (it's true that if the CO spots the group and commands a squad to go after the hiding squad it may circumvent the tactic) - BUT I don't think it is 'risky' because it still should be even, one squad against another deep behind enemy lines. Now, if the CO sends everyone to get you of course your squad will die deep in the map BUT that means that the main front will let up and the whole team will be able to push forward. The key to attacking/assaulting and gaining ground is to give the enemy team multiple battle fronts and simultaneous attacks - as assaulting force, controlling the back flag is key (for those type of maps anyway) in my mind. Sometimes, it's even enough to simply and steathly cap the very back flag and then divide the team equally between defense of the uncappable and defense of the back flag (do not attempt to cap anymore flags) and the enemy team usually throw themselves at the back flag and cause ticket loss. Either way, at least it's a tactic to try in order to push for a win, what else are you gonna do?

Re: A Guide to Commanding
I don't think this has been mentioned but in the commander screen if you use the scroll wheel and scrol in you can get an overhead view of the area Google Earth style and you still right click to spot enemies.

Re: A Guide to Commanding
One thing that should be mentioned is that if you're CO not every objective should be a flag. A good example of that is the Statue on Belgrade. Sending a single squad to attack the flag is hit or miss.
If you ignore the Statue for a moment you can concentrate on capturing the Ruins, Com Tower, and Playground. Then you can begin an attack on Statue by sending the squads at Playground and Ruins to the buildings on the Northern and Southern flanks of Statue. Their objective should be to secure those buildings and hold. Then you send a third squad from Com Tower up the stairwells the Statue's Eastern Flank. Usually the enemy is far to occupied with the squads in the buildings to even notice and if they do try and cover the flag they get cut down in the crossfire between the buildings.
It may seem excessive to send 3 squads after one flag but if it's done quickly you usualy only loose Ruins or Playground. Either way you end up with 3 squads within striking distance of Com Tower, Playground and Ruins. They wouldn't have that many options from any of other flag and you have the added bonus of Walker support. Regaining control of bleed after that isn't very difficult.
The same thing goes for every map; assaults will do a lot better if you take rooftops overlooking flags and give other squads objectives that will help one squad capture a flag.

Re: A Guide to Commanding
Has anyone made or know of any video showing a commander doing his thing? I see tons of vids for SL's SM's and the like but I cant say I have been able to find a vid of a commander at work. I personally have yet to command but would like to one day and would like the opportunity to see it done, especially at the high level that we see around here. Any where you can point me would be appreciated.

Re: A Guide to Commanding
hmm I had thought about making a commander video before but didn't think anyone would actually want to watch it.
It could be done I guess.

Re: A Guide to Commanding
It wouldn't be as exciting as a squad vid with tons of action and kills but from a training standpoint it could be very valuable. Personally I am a visual learner, i can read something all day but until I get to watch something and then get my hands on it it really doesn't sink in. Watching a command vid would give future commanders a chance to see what to expect with the command screen (i dont even know what it looks like yet!!) and what a commander goes through in a round. I would like to see what others think as well. Thanks simpson.
