Squad vs Sniper
Hi I am new to this forum and I had a question for all of the 'Legendary Fraggers' -
Ok I have seen here in these forums and at squadplay that powerful / team oriented squad can go along way. I know that is what makes this game excellent and I love being a active / support member (not much experience as leader) - but so I play recon quite a bit and I have read most of the recon / sniping guides out there but none I saw really addressed this question:
sniper vs a good squad? What would be the best techniques? I know millitary suggests rank (aka squad leader taken out) or medics but I would appreciate what would be the best because after the first kill more than likely would result in a revive / displacement by me - what about explosives?
Thanks in advance and great forum

Re: Squad vs Sniper
When I see a squad leader accompanied by a squad I ALWAYS take down the SL first if I can identify them (mostly through the presence of drones). Once the SL is down, don't fire again on another target. Wait for a couple moments, keep track of where the squad scatters, 9 times out of 10 a medic will move in to revive the SL. As soon as they do, drop the medic. Again, wait another moment in case there is another medic nearby. Once it's clear the revives aren't coming make an attempt to pick off the others or retreat if your position has been compromised.
Odds are you won't be able to take the entire squad down, but if you manage to drop the SL and medics you've definitely made them far more vulnerable for any teammates who may be near enough to mop up the leftovers.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
overlooked is the effectiveness of apms and rdx. and how well a sniper can hold a choke point.
place rdx and apm on chokepoints and find a good vantage spot. alternativly have a squadmate watch where your rdx is and have them tell you to blow it over voip. make sure they account for lag in voip transmission.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
Taking on whole squads is when the standard sniper rifle comes in very handy compared with the Zeller. When the medic goes in for the revive, they generally stand still and aim, making easy headshot bait. If any turn and fire in your direction, they won't hit unless they stand still or go prone, making for more easy bait.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
Unfortunaltly for a sniper any TG squad is going to have more than one medic and this tactic will not work at all. Most of the time one medic will get the SL up before the sniper can get off another round and if not the other medic will get them both up. While this is going on another assault that loves to fire rockest (which is all assault players) will most likely have spotted the sniper and rockets will be flying in his direction. The whole squad will be revived and the sniper won't be anything more than a minor annoyance. I can't recall any games that one sniper did anything to even slow down a good squad. So to address your question "sniper vs good squad" I would take one good squad over a good sniper anyday.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
That you KNOW about. I've flanked squads entrenched in Playground, and stood in Statue flag area, taking their hats off one at a time while they fight squads attacking from the apartment buildings to the south or north. In the heat of battle, they never even realized they had been flanked by a sniper and never took ANY action to provide cover to their flank, convinced that their only enemy was to their "front", giving me complete discretion over who got it next.
Your point is taken about a great squad giving a lone sniper total hell, but never say never or you will be sadly mistaken.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
Ok Thank you to all that have offered their opinions.
Now with amp & rdx I guess it would be a crap shoot on direction the squad may take, I like sc1ence's idea about expanding the sniper with a spotter (for lack of a better term) - johan's point is well taken - this why I asked such a question - it would seem that a 'good' squad is a force to be reckoned with and from a lone snipers point-of-view insurmountable.
Now with two snipers coordinating attacks what would the out come be? Or even sniper led attack / ambush with your fellow squad mates?

Re: Squad vs Sniper
I have worked in a small sniper squad with sparkle and one other tger. we completly held a flag from several decent squads, allowing other squads to focus on other things. i had 35+ kills, most of which were not revived. sparkle was using apm and rdx on a narrow passage, while i spotted for him and told him when to blow the rdx. it was very effective, but this would be limited to very few situations. more often than not, a sniper is only a nusance and thier kills are revived.
thats not to say that sniping is not fun. it can be, but more often than not, a lone sniper is simply inefective.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
I would still have to say the squad will win. JayKay has a point that he has been effective by using another squad as a distraction and I would not argue that point. With that said a sniper will be most effective if he is actually in a squad. He will be able to help the squad be spotting enemys, supplying the otus with intel, covering his squad mates backsor if the commander was having that squad of two covering another squad or that squad took it upon them selves to cover a squad.
I may be mis interpruting your question but I am picturing a flag that has been capped and two snipers laying around defending it. If a good squad of six were to come along those two snipers would not be able to hold that flag.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
Johan that is close enough to what I was thinking - now I hardly ever lone wolf so I would be in a squad and I was just wondering how to be the most effective for that squad - I feel it is offering support by hanging back from most members spotting or running point 'probing & wearing away' possible threats - I just really need to give up on recon - but it is a love hate relationship - assault is just more useful in more situations - but I just I will just have to decide on the fly.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
This is a good thread... I've had experience as a lone wolf sniper against a squad and I must say if they are at all competent you basically can only get a couple kills before your position is blown and you are dead BUT.. there are a few things that one can do to maximize the effectiveness against a squad..
Two men versus the squad is ideal (not one) for obvious reasons but one is that the sniper fire can make a squad huddle up and duck for cover which makes them a stationary target (aka GRENADES, rockets..etc).. I was working with one other sniper before and I was in the tower on camp gibralter and laying down sniper fire and the squad huddled around one of those car/rubble obstacles and my friend just ran cloaked up over them on the catwalk and threw two rdx packs right on them and we killed the whole squad, it was pretty funny..
though most squads have netbat 2.0 and you are just a diamond that starts getting heavy rocket fire after the first shot rings out so sometimes I rely on head-shoting one or two dudes then previously placed rdx packs, then if all else fails rush the whole squad with a knife..:P

Re: Squad vs Sniper
Regarding APM and RDX: I often use them on hotly contested flags. 2 days ago, the squad I was in was holding both Pond and Ruins. I would APM and RDX pond when we left it, to chase away Ruins-attackers, and invariably as soon as we left Pond, a squad would sneak up to Pond, and hit the APMs .. when I saw that, I equipped the detonator on the 5 RDX packs I'd placed in a ring around the flag, and as soon as I visually saw the flag lowering, I hit the button.
I think I killed that same squad 3 or 4 times in a ROW this way.
APMs go off ...
You have Killed X!
You have killed Y!
Wait for it ... flag goes down ..
CLICK
You have killed A!
You have killed B!
You have killed C!
Now granted, I'm 95% sure that this was a squad of pubbies playing on TG, and it would not have been so easy if only their Engy had equipped the DEFUSER. But who brings THAT along?
Pubbies think only about attack, never defense.
To be fair to Pubbies, I have blown up many |TG| this way too 8)
While Im thinking about it, a more rare use of RDX is running up to a Walker, tossing the RDX onto it's legs and slapping the stupid smile off of it's face. A good time to do this is during Orbital Strikes. Run thru the strike and destroy the walker in the confusion.

Re: Squad vs Sniper
Excellent JayKay - I always try that with the rdxs but I end up dying before I can trigger them!?!?!?! I need the zellar so I can just shoot the packs or simply run with a better squad to revive me.
