ids1 vs recon decoy
with all the complaining about how overpowered the new ids1 infantry scanner is i got to thinking about how to counter it. Traditional tactics simply are going to have to rely on speed and brute force. those tactics that relied more on stealth, will need to be modified. to that end, the recon decoy seems the best counter to get behind enemy lines that are defended using ids1. sl and 1 or 2 sm all recon, drop thier decoys with the rest of the camped squad. visual verification of squad can not be easily achieved so the camped squad puts up a fight and when dead, hold spawn. then the sl and 1 or 2 other recons cloak and sprint past defense to cap back bases. twhen they reach a flag, they have rest of squad spawn in as assult and support. this seems like the best way to get past toll defense on camp gilb when the meatgrinder is just starting or during heavy pitched battles. whenever you see a choke point defended by a decent squad, assume they have an ids-1. for a while, they will be lulled into a false sense of security, take advantage of it by using the recon decoy.

If one realizes that its in the area, wouldn't an EMP grenade knock it out (it's electronic after all), since emp weapons take out not just armor, but also the drones, etc.?, or if it's seen by a sniper, why not shoot it out (doesn't even take a zeller....I've destroyed pds and ids's before with a baur)?

They beep so that always helps. We also have to see if moving slowly will keep you from being spotted.
I figure the best counter to this will be to simply put everyone in a buggie or APC.

Decoy is supposed to have a 60 Meter Range. It only benefits the Recon using it and will draw his UAV signature to the point where you deploy the Decoy. If you are out of range the decoy will still create a fake signature but of course your own wont be masked.
Additionally if you are in Range of the decoy the enemy wont be able to get any netbat diamonds on you. You are safe from the Supporters helmet if you cloak/decloak.
Yesterday I placed a Decoy on top of the enemies UAV at EU base on Camp - while I was hiding up the ledge. Some support guy came along and ran circles around it - prolly thinking it was another 2124 Bug.

This sounds good, really good.
I would need 4 unlocks to get to it, but I think if you get certain medals on northern strike maps you can jump to a NS unlock, is that right anyone?

Nop - all the NS credits are normal Unlock Credits. You still have to make your way up the tree. BUT EA designed the NS badges so they are rather moderate to get. I got 3 badges easily when playing beta for only 4 hours without even trying for them.
So it should be an easy task to get 5-6 Unlock credits with a weekend of NS
The decoy is beeping but not very loud. I could barely hear it when I threw it on top of a car. Other than that its rather fragile and easily destroyed by random rifle rockets or nades. So look for a nice spot!

After playing a little last night with the IDS-1, I would say it's a good strategy as well to put it under something. It is also fairly easily destroyed by OS's and close explosions.

Silver for the NS unlock you can use your normal unlocks. In fact this last weekend I used a couple of the unlocks like the Clark RDX shotgun, may I add that is an awsome weapon, just as long as you know that it is not used for a primary weapon. Think of it as a sticky noise maker that confuses the other team and sometimes it does kill. I think I got like 5 to 8 kills with it.
