Transport fun
We all know that getting the vehicle you want is often a matter of luck when you spawn in, so this is definitely not a surefire deal.
On a round of Sidi, out of boredom I wanted to try out a squad based out of the air transport. I know it's been done before, and definitely recalls the days of the Blackhawk back in BF2, but after having fun just piloting a transport around during a Titan pub raid, I wanted to see if it could work. Here's the things I noted:
1) This will not work if the enemy has the gunship, for obvious reasons. Luckily, Lyramion had control of the gunship for those rounds, as we dropped him off at Reactor at round start.
2) Engineers in the bay doors, repairing while in flight, are necessary to transport survival while under any sort of attack.
3) I imagine this would have worked even better had we slapped both the PDS and IDS on the transport. So, the pilot should probably be support, for the IDS and to resupply anyone spamming explosives out of the bay doors.
4) I can't speak for the rest of the squad, but I had a lot of fun just tooling around, keeping the transport high and steady while the gunners put down some pretty deadly fire. I know Pfeil and Reaperassault were getting quite a few kills, and when we started taking mobile AA fire later, we had engineers frantically fixing away as the missiles pounded into us. I remember at one point, chaf3d and I did a midair seat change so I could fix up the transport.
5) Depending on how the kits are arranged, a squad based around the transport can act as a rapid response unit, anti-infantry support for vehicles attacking flags, or as a relaxing diversion from ground pounding.

Re: Transport fun
I was in one of the sqauds that was trying to counter you, you sure did give us a hell of a time. 2 hits from shoulder fired AA would bring you down to near death, but then you would be fully repaired by the time i reloaded. no one else in my squad had shoulder fired AA - cooredinated attacks could not happen. it was very cool to watch you respond to the AA. the first two time i hit you, you flew off like a bat out of hell, after that, you just kept the repairs up fast enough that nothing could hurt you.

Re: Transport fun
While I was not in the transport for most of the time our Squad did a hell of a job on Sidi. The Transport would keep the infantry under cover while my gunship could pick off some armor.
Since we had 2 things in the air the AAs werent able to concentrate on only 1 target.
Really nice rounds - all that was lacking was some old school Blackhawk C4 throwing!

Re: Transport fun
It would be great to keep the transport steady enough to actually have the engineers in the bay doors fire AT weapons at tanks and APCs below. I know I tried to hit some tanks with the Pilum, but I had a hard time compensating for the movement.

Re: Transport fun
You can forget any Pilum shots from there - thats where our oldschool rocketlaunchers play out their strengh.
One of the most fun things to do is to destroy a Gunship using the SAWW out of the sides of a Transport!

Thanks but I am waiting for my video card to come in the mail. I can't even hook my monitor up right now.

Re: Transport fun
I have to admit that I was quite surprised to learn just how effective the UD-12 can be in suppressing ground troops during an insertion. The Shepherd's cannons can be rather unwieldy at first, but once they are warmed up, they can put a lot of rounds downrange in a hurry and with relative accuracy.
