    Specialist or Multi-Role?

I have two profiles, each with 4 unlocks to spend.

One has the full Recon kit (+sprints & defib + SLB) other has Baur kit (+sprints & defib + SLB).

Now... I split myself between sniper/medic and also drive tanks (moderately frequently) and often fill in (less frequently) as transport/gunship pilot. I SL about 30% of the time.

Where are the unlocks best spent?

Should I give my Baur medic (mostly for conquest maps) the Voss tree, or should I kit him out with a sniper rifle? Or is support more useful in the SL role? Or maybe SL drone?

Should my recon kit (usually used for Titan) be given Baur medic (duplication?) or maybe engineer/pilum?

I don't really see myself as a support but may do it if advised (as advice from this forum has proven itself very useful in the past) and engineer/pilum is appealing for titan maps, but I await your advice...

So, roughly, what is better at this stage - a guy who can do a bit of everything (i.e. one recon/engineer or medic/support) or a fully-kitted specialist with all specialist unlocks?

What Class you enjoy playing the most and good at would be the best imo

In my opinion you should get your medic tree up with your Baur guy, because it will become handy to have two (three, really) weapons to choose from,
the Baur: for medium-long range firefights on fairly open maps and the Voss: for close combat maps and the Voss is also really useful on Titan. And the advanced med hub is nice too because you will be able to heal people while inside a vehicle (the tank for example).
Oh by the way: the squad leader drone is a very handy tool, I would recommend to unlock that item too.

if you play TG most of the time you play, a decent solution is to not unlock the top tier of some trees. you get squad upgrades very quickly on TG servers. usualy all of them within a round. as far as what to unlock. go with what you enjoy. voss tree is very useful, as is support and engy tree. recon is less useful imo, but can be lots of fun.

So we have one in favour of 'specialist' - getting the medic hub is a good point. Also I do SL a lot with the assault kit so drones may be worth it. But I was considering support (even though I'm not a huge fan) just for versatility cos I have lately found myself in squads with mostly medics (great, I know - unless ur rifle rockets run dry..) and as SL I tend to hang back a bit anyway in order to stay alive.

Recon = my 'fun' kit (I tend to belong to squad as 'support sniper/demo specialist') and it is simply a choice of where to go next. I was considering engineer (as railgun is nice and I DO use tanks/gunships a bit) BUT considering assault/sniper is my specialty maybe simply unlocking Baur tree again might be better to allow mid-game switch. I rarely SL as recon as I don't feel it is a 'teamwork' kit and I can't help my squad as overtly.

...But I'm still not sure what would be most effective...:-(

All you need for SL is the spawn beacon, the next beacon up can be a field upgrade (Otus) and the beacon after that is a waste of a point, or so I've been told.

I did as others suggested and unlocked everything in up to but not including the guns as those are easily unlocked in almost any TG squad after a few minutes of play. The one point I have spent on a rifle was the Bauer, only then only to be able to field unlock the extra rockets. I have a point to spend and haven't yet decided where to put it, but I might start unlocking engineer after a fun round playing with a borrowed kit.

    Re: Specialist or Multi-Role?

    1. I won't use two soldiers, that's just a waste of playtime because many awards/pins have an playtime requirement. But that is just my personal opinion. Personaly I'm more a friend of the allround thought, because unless you play with buddies of yours all over the time it just sucks when nobody on your team has unlocked anything from the engi trees, because they all went full assault/recon/support first.

    2. Download the ffolkes singleplayer unlock mod and play some time with all classes using the different unlocks. That's what I did when i asked myself which tree I should go next.

    3. If you want to rank up fast, which gives you a broader range of available unlocks/trees, I would recommend to play each class for ~16h (for getting the silver awards), after that either play the classes you like&need, or stick to one to fullfill the gold requirements faster.

For example look at assault, you need 50h for assault gold and 60 for medic gold, which gives you 3040 points through awards in 60h. If you would have played each class ~16h you could easily get the maximum of 4160 points, while playing for ~ the same time.

    4. If you still want to stick playing to soldiers instead of one, I would go for engi and the question pilum or MM can only be answered by you...think about my advice with the unlock mod. MM tree would help you getting explosive gold and the repair silver faster. As for the baur soldier, I would go for support and try the clark tree or use 2 unlocks on both trees, enabling you to access the pulsemeter and the s-gun through f-unlocks. Support is a great class for squadleading, because of the pulsemeter (say legal wallhack), the ammo-hub (let you reequip yourself with an otus drone if you also fieldunlock it) and the lmgs are better for a "support" from behind playstyle. Recon is a nice class but unless you try to sneak through enemy lines to place a beacon, it playstyle don't goes well with s-leading. A good SL should try to stay alive (esp. while using the otus) and have a good overview on the battle and stick to his squad. Sniping tends to a lone wolf playstyle and zooming for targets focuses your mind on the perfect headshot, while you should have used it for overlooking the situation and ordering your squad around. ^^

    Re: Specialist or Multi-Role?

Thanks Karstein - a lot of food for thought in your comments.

I'm hunting down the unlock mod now... :-)

    1. I tend to play a fair bit with an engineer specialist but I agree - I often find myself wanting an engie in the squad and I would benefit since I drive tanks a fair bit.

    3. Thanks for the unlock advice. I like unlock system in theory - but I hate the tendancy to point-whore in order to get the goodies you need...

    4. I totally agree - recon sucks as SL and though I am not a big support fan there are so many advantages of a support SL.... I really enjoy the railgun (anti-vehicle sniper rifle :-) but your MM/repair point is well made. More dilemmas :-)

    So, any more verdicts?

    A=Assault (Baur) medic/SL =should I go engineer or support or Voss-assault tree?

B=Recon (full) = should I go go engineer or support or an assault tree?

C=Stick with highest (recon) and get all assault stuff and just write off wasted time with other profile

    Re: Specialist or Multi-Role?

C...because unless you play only 1h a week it isn't that hard to rank up and dividing your total playing time on to soldiers isn't a good idea, if you look into the topic on the base of math&logic.

For example think about the legions merit ribbon, which has an global req of 120 gaming hours and 10 best kill streaks and gives you 2000 points. I'm an average gamer and I've got ~47k points in 8d playtime, including badges...that's ~4 points every minute. That ribbon equals 500 minutes playtime (more than 8h) and even if you're close to the last ranks 2k points are nice to have.

So I would either play the recon soldier from now on or take the one with the better stats if you care about things like that and write the other soldier off as "experience made, lesson learned"

Panzermagier is also my second soldier and dumping the first one, which I skilled as wrong as you can do it, was the best choice I ever made besides dropping titan maps until I get a better video card and a new cpu. ^^

EDIT: and 7k points isn't that far into the game... but you "should" use your time in a better way, playing nearly 3/4 of your total playtime as recon before reaching a high rank isn't wise. I would recommend to play each class for ~16h aiming on those silver badges, because they give you a decent point boost.

    Re: Specialist or Multi-Role?

It all depends on what maps you play. If you like vehicle based maps then go for the pilum. If you play more of the infantry based maps then I would use my unlocks on the assault kit. As for which assault rifle to choose it all comes down to preference and how much distance is between you and your enemy. Voss=short range *Baur=medium to long range

*Takes some getting used to. Unless you are right in the enemies face, keep it in semi-auto mode!
