Squad Kit Assignments

OK, this is part rant and part FYI:

Today, I started a squad, had people join and I assigned kits to the squad. Pretty standard kit assignment for an infantry map with the possibility of vehicles:
  • 3 x Assault
  • 1 x Support
  • 1 x Engineer
  • 1 x Recon

Guess what I got:
  • 1 x Assault (me)
  • 1 x Recon
  • 4 Support !!!

Now, I appreciate your willingness to supply me with the rockets I often run out of, but this is ridiculous. A good squad is one which stays alive and keeps rolling, especially after the SL goes down. This is a simple enough mistake to make on deployment, since it's easy to choose a kit without knowing what the others are thinking (I will get to this later). But, once the game has been in motion for a couple of minutes, I expect everyone to check the squad screen for which kits others have before respawning.

I do my bit for you. I take you where the action is, I assign waypoints, deploy a drone to mark your targets, even if it makes me a target. I communicate, I talk and tell you what we're doing and what we want to be doing. I forsake my own score by positioning myself where you can launch a good attack, I don't engage when it will reveal my position. By and large, I'm doing what I need to do as a SL. Please, do what you need to do as a SM. Play your damn kit that's assigned to you and freaking revive your SL. If you just want to do whatever the hell you want, go join some non-talking pubby SL who doesn't know how to issue waypoints and has no idea how to lead a squad to a strategic position to help the team achieve victory. You are wasting a space in my squad that could be taken by someone who knows how to listen to orders.

Many thanks to MAXx and Pablo, who actually paid attention to what I asked of them and worked as a team. As for the rest of you. Sorry, but you frustrated me so much, I had to disconnect before I spent the entire day playing in a locked squad by myself.

A little helpful hint when you're calling out kits: Say your name when you do. I know it's a little weird talking about yourself in the third person, but it helps people know who is doing what. E.G:

"Bommando Assault"
"Fehmart Assault"
"Arf Support"

etc ...

There are plenty of SLs who are more easy going than I am. They let you do whatever you want, wander off wherever you please and play any kit you want, even if it's sniping from a roof on the other side of the map. I'm not easy-going (this may be an understatement). I play hard to be the best SL I can be for my squad and I expect the same from them.

Thanks

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

i need i need to join your squad sometime. i often start up as SL, as my roomate and older brother join on me most of the time. my brother for some reason, suffers from lack of teamwork skills, as he wanders way off from what i am doing, or the team is doing lol. oh well not much to be done about it even if i say somethin, he likes to lonewolf. anyways, i feel your frustration. i've had squadmates spawn as the most obsurb group of kits. for example, me as a medic, and 5 support. 5?! wtf is that about? even if i ask on the mic often times people simply do not listen. this is part my fault because i've only been a pub gamer in 2142. i've in fact never joined a clan, tho i almost tried to do it in bf2. and for the same reason, hoping to find that tight teamwork that makes these games the most fun to play in such an atmoshere. another bad example, and this was just last night, i had a whole squad of medics save for one support (me). i'd go down, and they'd leave me down! i'd ask them to pick me up on mic, and i'd stay down? like i said, i'd like to join up with some of you cats on here and get some real teamwork down. i'm about it, as SL or SM, and whatever kit or tools needed.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

Yeah, Bom's squad is an ideal squad. I always get some idiots in squads I make. Its cool to be like, "Hey, SL, it cool if I try and go around the east side instead of the west, see if we can get an opening there?" or the like, but if someone just joins your squad, and everyone else is grouped together and they peace out and do their own thing, I'll usually kick 'em out.

And the medic thing where no one revives you, yeah, thats very frustrating. I remember the first week this game was out, you go down and call for a medic. You see one red cross symbol out of all the other come running for you, thinking, "Oh yes! Someone who knows what's going on!" Expecting a revive, you get a face ful of medkit, and they run off.

I just boot players and leave them to the mercy of the squad kick. It sounds mean but it's better that guy makes space for another potential player (or supporting member) then one of the 2 or 3 players in my squad who actually want to use this server for what it's intended.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

Well said Bom. I don't SL much, but I had an experience yesterday that didn't make me too happy. I was playing in a squad that started out with balanced and mixed kits (as usual I fill the Recon/Sniper spot). After about 8-10 minutes of play I hear Arf (if I remember right) threateneing to stop giving us revives. So I check out the squad kits...three snipers, one support, one medic (Arf). This made me unhappy cause A) i was grouped in with the chumps, and B) There is never a need for that many snipers in a CQ combat team. I mean...my job is the make sure those guys up on the hill only get to fire off a single rocket before catching a sniper bullet in the eye so my ASSAULT team can get the real work done!

Also, there is no reason a medic shouldn't get a revive. For those who have played in a squad with me, you know that if your a medic and you go down...its an easy kit exchange and a revive. However, one time I did get yelled at by my squad leader for making him a "useless sniper" (Fehmart? not exactly sure who though). So I've gotten in the habbit of apologizing before I make this transfer. **of course this tactic is only used when there are no medics around to get the revive or time is running out**

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

i don't blame fehmart... i mean, while I love when people get me up, being a sniper is pretty useless. I've recently looked at your stats, guardian (trying to figure out team balance for the scrim, not stalking), and they're very good, so it's possible you're one of the few who are good enough with a sniper kit that you're a good thing for a squad, but I'm certainly not, so when I get made a sniper, I spend a good deal of time looking for another kit to pick up.

that's why if i do go with a recon (which i try and avoid unless someone really wants to or i think the map really calls for it) i usually prefer having a lambert guy.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

I find the same problems every day, but generally, it turns out to too many medics. I've been working on getting the basic unlocks for both engineer and support.

I got all the medic unlocks (right side of assault tree) but decided against the rockets to focus more on a supporting role (if I don't have rockets, then I'll be concentrating more on reviving my teammates rather than getting those extra kills. Instead of taking on enemies myself, I'll now tend to try to spot them to allow my squad mates to take them out, and perhaps fire a few rounds into their chests to weaken them and draw their attention towards me while my squad mates blast them away.

As for sniper kits, I personally like these even though I'm no good at sniping. I tend to use the sniper kits as mid-range assault rifles (it's pretty effective since i always aim for the head in most cases). Even if you aren't sniping, having a sniper in your squad is generally very effective for several reasons (some of which have been already stated by Guardian).

So, in conclusion...
Heh, i couldn't help but feel that I was writing an essay for school.
Sometimes I'll wander off without realizing it, but once I do, I try to get back up with my squad leader asap. So if I have left any of you SL's to take a stroll, I apologize.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

Heh, I remember being in that squad with you Bommando. Most of it being support, including me but you will almost always see me being support. It got so out of hand that Bommando had to make a whole new locked squad.

Not 100% sure if i was in the squad with Guardian and arf but i do recall someone mentioning "if I don't get some revives I'm not going to revive you guys".

Usually when I'm in a squad there is a good balance between kits. If I'm ever squaded with anyone here you can pretty much count me in for support.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

One thing to consider before saying sniper is useless is the NetBat stuff. They make a contact stay lit up for either 5 or 10 seconds before fading away. That comes in handy now and then.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

I just usally kick squad members iff they decide to do what they want to do and not follow orders. It is the TG server and we do enforce teamwork and following orders! Nothing cruel about them getting kicked for not following the rules. I hate when someone joins the server, then joins a squad just so they can play and not do what they are told! Good post Bammando! Glad someone brought it up.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

I believe I was in that squad as one of the supports. I would just like to defend my actions as I clearly stated at the beginning of the round before spawn that I had support covered. I later switched to assault when you complained.

I wish there was some way to stop yourself being revived, I kept getting revived when I was trying to change to assault...

EDIT: Also, the second time you made a squad, I was on my way to revive you before you kicked/locked the squad, but I died a few seconds before you and couldn't get to you in time after I spawned, sorry about that.

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

sl should assign kits imo. if you call out for the squad loadout but do not say who should be who, you should expect a strange loadout.

ask for engy volenter first, then support, then recon, then say evryone else is medic. this takes perhaps 20 seconds and avoids the problem you mentioned in your post.

now if you did the above and you still wound up with 4 supports then it is time to explain the TG way and how mates should follow orders.

if you rely on your sqaud to figure out kits you will allways have problems. even if they got it wrong at the start, say everyone notices that there are no engys and 4 supports. next spawn, you have a bunch of engys, then they all switch back to support cause they see there are no support.

asking for volenteers for position allows peeps to pick a kit they have rather than being assinged. if you need motion mines, ask for engy with motion mine etc...

Re: Squad Kit Assignments

i've rarely foundt hat i have too many medics on my squad. Occasionally I'll run out of ammo and realize there's not a supply guy around, but that's pretty rare, and often times I can pick up another kit from the ground really easily (I spent that ammo on someone after all).

As for the netbat, that's okay, and the recon works pretty well with the otus drone, but I still prefer them to be a lambert rather than a sniper.
