it's not necessarily a waste to make sure it registers on the netbat, but since I have to prioritize my time, I usually don't bother doing this. I'll spot the player out. I generally keep a pretty close watch on my minimap -- i expect i'm not alone in that.

Yeah, it goes hand in hand with everyone in this game and many others: almost everything is useful, up until a point. Knowing when things reach that point is key.

Yes. Without it, you won't get netbat info, and you can't pass on info to your other SMs.
The assualt netbat passes on infantry information. So lets say you spot an enemy recon, you pass on the fact that your spot was recon. Similarly, an engineer passes on the identity of armor and vehicles. A recon in your squad allows netbat to hold onto the spot information for a few extra seconds even when the enemy is behind cover. I forget what the Support netbat does.
