Talking Gunship Tactics

Anyone have any gunship tactics?
I spam with a gunship, and was wondering if anyone else has any spare tips.
I have a few:

When taking off, always gain altitude. This allows you to see any enemy gunships/transports without them seeing you. While higher up in the air, use the Ctrl + mouse to look around. This is EXTREMELY important.

Once in a while, use the F12 key. This is a fly-by mode that lets you see if there is anyone on your 6. To get out of the view, hit the C key.

I use the mouse for regular flying, but if I get in a dogfight I switch to the Arrow keys. I don't have a joystick so I can't help you there.

You can turn a gunship to about a 90 degree angle before it flips over. I usually keep it at about 85 max so it doesn't flip. If you do end up flipping over, just press and hold the W and ^ arrow key or if you have enough altitude you can use W and the down arrow key to do a flip.

Try not to attack a tank head on. A good tank driver will see you and hit you with his big, bad gun. This is expecially true for the A-8 Tiger tank (EU), since it has a 360 degree turret. Also, watch out when flying low and still near a flag. A good engineer will hit you with a Pilum, leaving you with a second to jump out.

If you are getting hit by AA, try to put things between you and the AA. Hills, buildings, etc. If suddenly you get half of your health stolen away, you are getting hit by a SAW. I suggest instantly putting on a shield and putting distance and objects between you and that engineer.

APCs = easy points. They are big and kinda slow, but watch out for that EMP launcher.

Any tank = a little harder to kill. You have to put every single missle on it. Also, the AT missile that the gunner has can only 1 shot tanks in the rear. Otherwise, combine the gunner's missiles with yours.

Walkers = VERY hard to kill. It's armor is very thick, and that AA gun on the top can rip you apart.

Gunships = Depends on the pilot. It doesn't take many missles to kill it, but there are some smart pilots...

Transports = Slow, easy kills. These tend to have 3 or less people on it, but you have to shoot it down very fast to get them all since they will jump at the first instant of damage.

Lastly (that I can remember) a Gunner should try not to use the machine gun when you are behind a gunship. It can alert the enemy gunship that you are behind him.

Hope this guide was a help, srry it was so long :/ .

Re: Gunship Tactics

Well, being behind another gunship will give a lock on warning if your cursor swings over them. Walkers are generally an easy kill with the TV missile, one shot in the torso will take them down to a burn and then the pilot can easily and quickly finish off with missiles. To make a gunship really effective, you have to attack while not being seen and quickly, or else they'll throw a shield up and stop your barrage.

Re: Gunship Tactics

Usually, I take the center of the crosshair right off the gunship. When I am going to take the enemy gunship down, then I put the crosshair on it and open up. I wish the gunship had something like the bombing mode of the BF2 jets, where they wouldn't get a signal.

Could you get me a gunner that could hit the torsoe of a walker? Other then that just a random gunner won't hit it or I will be solo-ing.

To your last part, yes I thought it was just obvious.

Re: Gunship Tactics

Tip for TV missile: take it slow, over-exaggerate the slowness of turning missiles. It'll travel the same as if you moved your mouse crazy fast, but you'll get a finer control taking it slower.

Whenever its a vehicle map, I'll try and make a gunship squad to mix things up and have some fun. As of a result of this, skills with missiles and flying have greatly improved.

Dogfight tips:

Don't loop; your enemy is behind you, if they're smart, they'll slow down and stay on your tail or just wait and let you pop right back up in front.

Change speeds and make sharp slowing turns often. If someone is closely following you, chances are they'll fly past and you can just continue your turn and get right up behind them.

Use the hover; its an amazing way to turn and do some really interesting mid-air dancing. On a few ocassions I've been lucky enough to dance away from a missile or two.

Good squad loadout: Engineer as pilot with PDS attached and Recon as gunner. You'll get the radar from the PDS of other vehicles, and with the netbat going, the gunner can spot things and keep them in sight for far longer.

Stop!, no more secrets!

Most of this is very good knowleadge. Mostly the looking around with the ctrl key. This is where most of my kills come from. I hang at the 325m base line and BARCAP the map looking for that bandits. Once they are in my sights from looking around I gain the best angle of attack I can get without losing the target.

All of this I'll be going over in my TGU class which will have sign-ups soon.

Gunshipping is easy! You are just like a kid that touches cooking plates - and there are MANY on the Battlefield for you to touch!

Once you touched all you will be able to stay alive for a whore round

'No loops'? What, are you crazy? I love to loop! You are talking about a simple loop, whereas I go freaking crazy in the gunship. If you've flown with me, you know what I'm talking about. I'll weave through obstacles just for the hell of it. I'm insane.

Re: Gunship Tactics

Haha, oh, its fun man! I've pulled off some of the luckiest maneuvers. My lowest altitude flip was under 100m, no clue how I did it, but so happy because I didn't die. One thing to remember, if your skimming on the ground low (I mean touching), the game will register you as being landed, so you'll somewhat stick to the ground. If there's a bump coming up you'll ram it and blow up.

I used to think a good tatic to lose gunships was to outfly them and try to get them to lose you. If you're by yourself, this is probably your best bet. But, if you have a gunner, you should just constantly try and keep them in front of you, even if that means slowing down and hovering now and then, because they'll be able to shoot at them. Coordinate missile reloads and gunner bursts to take them down.

Re: Gunship Tactics

Dude, I hold the ship over and flip at the last minute, it's wierd but the ship 'bounces' up and I'm good to go.

Re: Gunship Tactics

Wow some good stuff here.

I tend to not flip, I trick some noob-ish pilots by going straight up, making it look like I am doing a flip, but just level off.
I love using the hover key and leading the missiles into them...

Loops are far to predictable. You can just hover and wait for them to come back down.

oh and Eroak, that is a cool sig. Could I just get the pic of the gunship?

Re: Gunship Tactics

I never ever use the hover key -just keep tabbing your forward thrust. It takes too long of a second to go from hover to normal move. I only ever hovered using the hover key when farming kills off the back of a noob titan server

Re: Gunship Tactics

I mostly use the hover in the hopes that I'll slow down while turning, not sure how well it helps. Other times is if I'm trying to setup a tricky-er shot for a gunner.

Killing a gunship as it spawns or is just about to take off would be considered UCB camping.
