1. As long as you had it on your kit, and you have at least one other SM with you the beacon should be ready under the #8 hotkey.
2. I would change your name of the squad. People that tend to be more team players would join a named group before a generic one. If you let them know your new I am sure most players will be pretty forgiving and even help you out while you squad lead.
On a side note, if you ever see a squad called "Learn TG" join it and watch what the squad leader does. These squads are generally very well run and lead by top notch SL's

B e sure that you had the beacon moved over to each one of your kits. If you put it in your reacon kit and use assualt, it will not be there. You said you where new, so I thought this might just be an oversight. I have done it on my own kits, or set the kit up for assualt the way I want it an accidently pick support..................DOH!
