Went searching through the various threads looking for info on the difuser. After reading about the Engineer unlocks, I wish I kept to the right side of the tree, but I did unlock the difuser (to work towards the pilum). Can someone give me the Difuser 101 lowdown please? How & when do you use it? What's the best use of it? Etc......
It's pretty easy. The defuser will defuse any explosive device. Just select the defuser, and there will be an icon in the middle of the screen where the reticle usually is (like the assault defib.) Place the icon over a motion mine, emp mine, etc. and left click. It will disappear like magic. Very handy for when you're riding in a vehicle being a backup engy.
It performs pretty much the same function as the motion mine bait does. But there are some differences. The motion mine bait can be used at a distance and thrown, the defuser is more like a melee range weapon. You have a very limited supply of MMBs, but the defuser can defuse any number of items since it isn't ammo based. So you're essentially trading exposure for repeatabilty, but it's pretty easy to pop out of a vehicle, load up the defuser, and then zap all the mines you've managed to attract. The motion mine bait will be better if you spot a field before you run into them, and the defuser is better if you're already in the middle of the field due to the proximity of the mines especially if you've drug them enough to clump up (both from an ease of disarm perspective and the final MMB blast might endanger the vehicle if it is too close.)
mhm, I think it can also remove scanners from walls n' stuff, I found it pretty useful when I unlocked it, especially in titans. Problem is you are so exposed, at least with the motion mine bait you can throw it at their feet so they go 'onoz!! a frag!!! duck!!'

Scanners can be removed through a sudden sneeze in their general direction, that's how fragile they are. And on Titans, I find the easiest way to defuse explosives is with other teammates. If they weren't rendered unrevivable by MASSIVE DAMAGE, then maybe I can defib them.

Heh too true, I'll tend to let a squad of lemmings run right by me to help out.
The defuser was the initial anti-explosive equipment in the game before the motion mine bait was introduced. It takes out EMP Mines, Motion Mines, APMs, and RDX. With the advent of MMB (motion mine bait) the use of defuser has dropped since APMs can be crouched passed or revived over, EMP mines are mostly ignored or sniped, and RDX is disabled by killing the deploying recon since they can no longer blow it if they don't get a revive (not likely under a tank or walker).
HOWEVER, with the advent of patch 1.40 there will probably be a new need for defusers because now left over RDX from dead recons can be detonated by the support Clark-RDX. Then again, a sniper with a Zeller can accomplish the same thing.
Personally I find if the other team has a competant Gunship/Transport pilot/gunner team it might be worthwild to pick a position and go as an Anti-Air Engineer. As such my kit usually has the AA gun, Vehicle IDS, and Defuser because I'll be engaging vehicles from turrets or with friendly engineers/recon and my main duty is like a lightly armed CQC specialist waiting for a flyby.
The defuser is the tool you really wished you had when you need it, and think of as a waste of space when you don't.
My sanity is not in question...
It was a confirmed casualty some time ago.
Light, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they ticked me off.
And on Titans, I find the easiest way to defuse explosives is with other teammates.
LOL! This was too funny!
By the way, Defusers are very effective on titans, since enemy Recons are fond of planting a single RDX and APM in the doorway to halls. It's the reason I no longer put APM's at the entryways to the halls, since they're too easily defused there.
A Zeller will take out RDX without exploding it, provided it is not on a deployable/player-dropped object (includes beacons and IPS shield) or vehicle (Titan included).
Now how does MMB take out EMP mines? I've never actually seen it happen so I curious as to how that works.
