Growing Frustrations

I wasn't sure if this was possible or not, but I think I'm actually getting worse. Granted, I don't get alot of practice time due to real life being beyond crazy right now but there should be some progress over the last few months. I'm taking steps to fix a couple things at the moment. One being my mouse. I constantly find myself hitting wrong keys and hope that the G5 that is in the mail will help cut down on the number of keyboard mistakes. I'm also signed up for the infantry training this weekend with Waffle. I'm looking for feedback from those that I've played with, or others in general. Could it just be that I'm not cut out for FPS? Should I just stick to COH? I don't wanna be "that guy". The one that always holds the squad up. Seems to be the case the last 3 or 4 sessions out. I just don't enjoy coming in last in every squad i'm in and spending the majority of the rounds looking at the spawn screen. Rambling now....I'll leave it at that.

Re: Growing Frustrations

Truth time: join squads where the SL expects a lot from you -- too much in fact. Or at least, you think it's too much. It'll make you better to try and meet those demands. Just make sure you're the one who's most eager to please.

I'm a fairly demanding squad leader (possibly to make up for a lack of skill, or a propensity to rambo if you listen to Lorax, maybe i'm just a jerk. whatever the cause is, it's true), and I like to take fairly averaged skilled TG guys and push them really hard. Sometimes that means a bit of handholding, sometimes it means encouragement, and sometimes it means showing my disappointment and frustration. But players get a lot better playing on TG, and the ones who improve most are the ones who like to be pushed further than they think they can.

Re: Growing Frustrations

I can compelelty relate, ATR. I came into 2142 with very little FPS experience at all aside from a few bouts in Tribes and Planetside years ago. I was very fortunate to luck into finding the TG server literally the third server I ever played 2142 on. And I've not played very much at all off the TG server, maybe 300 or so points worth.

In general, the TG folks are a very tough lot to compete against getting your feet wet, but let me tell you from experience that your skills will improve many times faster for going through the rough period trying to keep up and sticking it out then if you didn't. Over the past few months I've progressed quite a bit, and still have tons left to learn. The most important thing to remember is to keep thinking about what you're doing and how you can do it better.

If you feel like you are holding the squad up, examine why that is, and try and take steps to get ahead of the game. I understand that this is easier said then done a lot of the times, but that phrase can have many different meanings. If you are talking about marksmanship, practice in a single player game against a wall or bots. If you're talking about lagging behind in movement and being the last to the fight, watch your min-map more and try and anticiapte where your squad is heading next and get in a good position before your squad is already on the way (get the sprint unlocks, can't stress that enough.) You're not going to be right 100% of the time, but the more you move from reflexive or reactive action to anticipatory action the better positioned you will be.

While you're gaining experience on this tough field, you will spend time staring at the spawn screen. Been there, done that. But, this gives you 15 seconds to think about what just happened and what you could have done differently while it's fresh in your mind. I know the sweet, sweet temptation of simply using that time to vent or be hacked off. Try and avoid that, and instead use that time to your advantage. Another thing that is useful for sitting on the spawn screen, is two-fold. One, you get a chance to view the battlefield from the spawn screen so you can get a better overall view, and how your squad fits into that, where the enemies are, where the big pushes are, etc. This can be valuable information for when you go back into the fight. Use the squad tab every time you can when you're dead so you have the best intel when you hit the ground again. Two, if you were physically lagging behind, you just got a free ticket to the action by spawning on your SL.

And, as far as your question about if you're suited to FPS' or not goes, just like any other activity you can possibly do, everyone is going to have different skill levels, strengths, and weaknesses. With experience you can and will improve these things if you try. But, don't just consider the scoreboard as the end all be all meter stick to judge your performance. It sounds to me like you are setting the bar at some arbitrary level that is on par with those that have been playing FPS' for years, and more specifically those that have been playing the BF series from 1942 to BF:Nam, BF2, and onto 2142. Just like many people say about being on a team that is not performing well, you've gotta pick your win conditions. Did you do all you could within your power? Did you play better then you have in the past? Did you do anything particularly good? This could be something as simple as one really good kill that you got the drop on someone, or one sneaky move that got you a flag cap. Choose your victory where you can, do your best to support your squad, and keep at it and things will get better. As you get better skill and experience your chosen victories will get larger, and your personal demand for performance will increase. Trust me on this as I've walked this same road, and I'm still right in the middle of it.

Re: Growing Frustrations

I can relate to this. I discovered TG back in march and it's all about improving yourself.

The first months i squaded up and learned alot there. I still played too much rambo on occasion , my k/d ratio shows that but i had fun!

After a while i wanted to improve my gameplay so i started reading more on the forums, buying better hardware, trying new things out, and thinking more tactical in game. Pablo's link has some good practical tips that hits the spot actually! Trying new things can make your game seem worse in the beginning, so be patient.

And this is where i am i think, still learning but i'm better than i ever have been. I still learn from other players that have more experience so i'm confident i'll get even better.

And take comfort in the following, some people in here play alot more than you and i do, so their skills are better because of it. But at least we have a life

Re: Growing Frustrations

Time and practice, learn from your mistakes and others. Watch the videos that are posted. Join Tg squads and follow orders, ask questions. Most importantly remember, it is a game for fun so relax and enjoy......have fun! You will get better and if you play Tg server all the time just remember, most of these players are much better than any on the pub servers.

Re: Growing Frustrations

If you can't beat them, help other people beat them. Take a box of supplies, a sentry gun and EMP grenades into a deadlock. Put the sentry down to cover your squad and drop supplies for the squad and then keep EMPing the other team. You won't DO anything, really, you'll just annoy them, but they can't shoot straight and you give a bit of an edge to your squad.
Or take the medic kit and just sit from afar and run in and revive people and heal them up. ALways look for orangish circles on your map -- those are people with < 50% HP.
Or if your SL is driving something, spawn as engineer on him. Heal up the cars, lay down random mines so that armor doesn't penetrate teritory you already hold.

Point is, help out your team. You'll get loads of points and people will notice you. Your teammates will thank you and you will have made a difference.

Killing other people is, roughly 70% of the time, just being in the right place at the right time. The gun doesn't matter because they're unaware of you and you can kill the the same with a Voss, a Baur, or a Clark. If you want to improve your kill count, don't run around headless. Play the game in the most logical way but learn from mistakes. Find where people often go and think what YOU would do if you were on the other team. Flank people, go around them, go beside them, take ten seconds longer to get into a position of advantage. I don't mean roofs -- I mean get into behind their lines.

That is solo play advice but I learn faster if I play solo because I die faster. The more I die, the more I learn.

Re: Growing Frustrations

Zhohar has good points, but I would like to add that good squad movements always help with the kills/keeping friendlies alive. If a buddy is looking left, look right. If you are behind the other 5 members, walk backwards and cover the arse of the squad. Press tab periodically and take note of what you have for squad members. Good squad layouts are typically one of the following depending on the situation:

5 Med
1 Sup

4 Med
2 Sup

4 Med
1 Sup
1 Eng

Take inventory of whats going around, and fill in the gaps on the squad. You will be useful! Hell, you dont even need to die to fill in the gaps. Just killed a sup and you need on in your squad? Take his damn kit.

Edit: Dont be a pure gun totting support. When there is nothing going on, throw a ammo box down. Or if you are all stuck at a corner throw one there. Its helpful as a squad to know you now have 3 grenades instead of 2, etc.

Re: Growing Frustrations

A quick way to really contribute to the squad and for it to be noticed is to be the squad leaders medic, be the guy that revives the squad leader on a consistent basis. He/she will appreciate it and probably comment on it and the rest of the squad will notice (even if they dont comment).

If I was starting again I would focus on and get good at 3 things (1) reviving the squad leader (2) default assault rifle, its the best all rounder (3) rifle rockets. I would get unlocks, defibs, extra sprint & sprint recovery, rifle rockets. Being a competent medic/assault rules on a lot of maps.

Hey, you've let out the secret as to why anyone ever keeps me in their squad!

As an additional piece of advice that will at least help you feel like your "failing" less at this game, take a round or two to just practice not dieing. Sounds frivolous, but learning how to keep yourself in safe positions and how to find good cover gets you a long in this game.

Think of it this way: You're no good as a medic if you're the first one to die.

Winning a head to head encounter is risky, even if you're among the best with respect to twitch. But, if you're under good cover or can ambush/surprise your enemy, you are a) more likely to beat your opponent AND b) more likely to stay alive.

Oh, and get a medic when you need one. I mean, really SCREAM for one sometimes. That's what I learned from Bommando. And it works.

That's the only way I can take down Hidus. (by shooting him in the back)

Some of these guys are just that good.

I felt like I was running around last night with a giant neon bullseye. Not one of my better nights.

Re: Growing Frustrations

I'll throw in something that none of the rest of the guys have said: theres nothing wrong with being "that guy". I'm a freaking bullet sponge, ask any of the TG guys who have squadded with me. I shoot a few rounds, maybe get a kill or two, then die, get revived, die 3 seconds later, rinse and repeat. But it doesnt bother me for one simple reason: my gameplay isnt focused on skill. I help my team any way i can, I follow orders and I play to have fun. Sometimes spending more time dead than alive is a pain, but I still have fun. Thats the key here. Yes, we hold ourselves to a higher standard than most other places, and that will help you immensely if you go on pub-raids. Trust me, as much as my skill bites here, when i go pubbing, I rack up massive scores!
