Better playing BF2142 in XP or Vista?

Hello all,

I just bought a Macbook Pro, which should arrive late next week. I have the option of using either Windows XP or Vista (I can get them both free through my college) with Bootcamp. Is either one better for gaming (BF2142 in particular)? If they're mostly the same, I'll probably stick with XP as I've never used Vista. I don't think BF2142 supports DX10, right?

I may in the future try the new Mac version of the game. The new OpenGL system in Leopard MAY make it run even better than it does on Windows. But, as of now, all of the reviews I've read says it's laggy in the OS X version.

If you have the choice, use XP with 2142 as 2142 is not officially supported by vista or DX10. It will work on vista but requires a bit more tweaking that you will not have to deal with in XP. Good luck.

XP because 2142 has no DX10 support. So, for 2142 all vista will do is eat up more RAM. Thank you MSFT!

Depends what's more important to you - 2142, or newer games. 2142, probably stick with XP, new games, go with Vista.

I guess it also depends on your rig. If you have the resources to run vista and game at a level you are happy with, then why not? There is always going to be controversy on which os to run. There are so many factors involved that it seems more like personal preference to me.

I run vista with a DX9 card and have no problems with 2142, I say go with vista, it just gives you more options

Re: Better playing BF2142 in XP or Vista?

Vista is more OS X-ish in terms of features, so it may be better to use. Although with a 8600 card (I am assuming your has this since most notebooks do) you won't be able to run any DX10 very well on the DX10 settings. Also Vista is a bit harder on laptop batteries since it access RAM more (with its awesome caching feature).

I like Vista a lot more then XP so I'd say go with Vista.

If you do get Vista just make sure to run the game as admin (right-click the shortcut, properties, check the "Run as Administrator" box) or turn of User Access Control.

Re: Better playing BF2142 in XP or Vista?

Thanks for all of the input. I decided to go with XP. One, because I already know it & it's supposedly more secure (not a major factor, though). Main reason is that I could download XP for free, and I couldn't Vista, as it had to be shipped and would cost $15 for shipping. Btw, this is legitimate. It's the MSDN service between my college and Microsoft, that let's us get certain Microsoft software for free.

Re: Better playing BF2142 in XP or Vista?

Well, I take that back. The Windows XP disk doesn't include SP2. For bootcamp to work, the disk has to include SP2 (for XP, that is). There's ways to hack it and get around it, but it's not worth it. So, I'll be ordering Vista for $17 and some change (for shipping as it's not available to download like XP).

How much space do you think I should partition for it? I've got almost 70 GBs left. Will 20 GB for Vista, BF2142, and maybe a couple of other programs be enough?

You will grow to love Vista...it's almost like an overprotective parent.

Errr I'd go for 30 at least. Your going to end up with a bunch of other junk on there that you don't expect. Remember, all the my documents and desktop will be on there too. You'll probably have about 10 GB left over if you go with 20, but I'd reccomend going with 30 at least so you have some breathing room.

Man, you weren't kidding! I had to OK changing a file extension 4 times!!! Is there any way to turn that setting off?

Anyways, besides getting a Punkbuster error (which may just have to do with the server), everything is up and running great on the MacBook Pro!

Re: Better playing BF2142 in XP or Vista?

I mentioned in my previous post that you have to run it as admin to play on Vista, you'll get a "O/S Privilege" error or something otherwise.

You can turn off UAC which will allow you to run it without running it as an admin and turn off the "allow/disallow" and "continue" prompts.

Thanks Zoopy! That's exactly what the problem was.
