    Northern Strike

I was thinking of maybe buying Northern Strike. I am 9 ranks away from Brigadier General, and I could get the Northern Strike badges/ribbons really fast and get the unlocks I care about, and then save the unlocks you get from ranking up to spend on the unlocks I don't care about.

I have some questions before I purchase. I know that lots of people have had problems with this. Now you have to buy it on the EA Store. What happens when you buy it? How is the download started, is it just a normal thing you download from your browser? What kind of file is it? When you add it to your cart, they try to sell you another service that extends your download period from 6 months to 2 years in case of a hard drive crash or whatever. Would I be able to take the Northern Strike download and put it on an external hard drive for safekeeping instead of buying that stupid crap?

You use the EA download manager to download it.

Use the EA DM to download it just select it from your purchased games and select download.

What kind of file is it?
    The file is an executable

You don't need to buy any special service for extended downloads.

Once you download it the EA DM creates a folder called Program Date which it will be in. The file is about 164 megs so just copy it where ever you want it to hold onto it. Also once you buy it as long as you can log into your EA account you can always redownload the file.
Make sure you use the same EA account you use for BF2142. Some people have a version error problem when first installing Northern Strike. Just reinstall the 1.25 update over 2142/NS and it will fix the problem if you have it.

    So stock BF 2142
    1.25 patch
    Northern Strike
    1.25 patch again.

Probably a bit more info than you needed.

Northern Strike was very refreshing for me. It breaks up the monotony by adding a few more new maps and some quick unlocks. And not to mention you can join us for Pfrosty Pfridays!

    Re: Northern Strike

Ok but my main question is what do you get when you buy it? Is it a normal .exe file I can back up, or is it some proprietary locked-up crap that I would have to buy again should I lose the file?

EDIT: oops I didn't see you answered my questions in the quotation :O. I'm a little confused about the download part though. When you add it to yoru cart, they add a service called Extended Download Service. this says:
"Think of this as your digital safety net for those unexpected occurrences - like your hard drive frying or a virus infection. EDS means that with the purchase of your digital product, we'll keep a copy of your file for two full years, so you don't have to. This is in addition to the complimentary coverage we provide for 6 months with any digital purchase from the EA STORE. You'll gain peace of mind knowing that we have your program stored and ready for you to download again at your convenience."

So if I don't pay extra for EDS, I can download the file for 6 months. But can I back up this file, thus removing the need for EDS?

Yes, you can backup the NS installer. I did. Don't bother with the EDS stuff.

    Re: Northern Strike

    The install steps are this:

    1) 2142
    2) patch 1.25
    3) NS
    4) patch 1.25

Assuming you already have 2142 + 1.25 then its as you said NS and then 1.25 again.

Get ready to pick up some very easy unlocks.

Thats what I did, I used a different email account for my EADM account to my 2142 account. I think I'll probably need to make a new EADM account with the same email address.

    Re: Northern Strike

The latest patch is 1.4, not 1.25. So the install directions stay the same just use the latest 1.4 patch.

I downloaded it onto my last PC, but I havn't transfered it over yet (I don't really want to pay twice). If I was to plug them together and transfer it, which file would I be looking for, and where?

    Re: Northern Strike

Look for a folder named something like this "bf2142_bp1". That is how mine downloaded but I do not know what the default location would be, I saved it automatically to another hard drive for future use. Maybe try doing a search on it to see if anything pops up with that folder name.
