Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
I just went and did a full reinstall (x2) and went and did everything by the numbers for NS and 1.40 but I crash back to desktop when I do the following:
- Attempt to join a server
- Attempt to play single player
- Try to click on the Audio tab in the Options Menu
I have looked at the Tech Spt on the EA pages but cant locate a single post.
Anybody have any thoughts or comments?
And just for details:
Dell Inspirion 9300 Laptop
2 GB Ram
Sigmatel Audio w/latest drivers
Win XP sp2

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
It sounds like a driver issue to me. What was the reason for the reinstall?

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
The game was reinstalled due the same error.
I had encountered a crash back to the desktop after the initial server load screen. So I cleaned out the files and did the following:
- Updated Windows
- Updated Sound Card drivers
- Installed 2142
- 1.4 patch
- Northern Strike
- 1.4 patch
And still no luck.
I have just now uninstalled it once more. I have cleaned out all of the files and about to run a registry cleaner and also a full system defrag and optimizer.

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
I would install the video, sound, and nic drivers once again before installing 2142 again, see if that resolves the issue.

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
This sounds like a problem I had a long time back....I think it started around the time my PC froze and I had to switch it off. Every time I tried to start a game after this it would crash to desktop.
I had to create a new soldier and play a game with him then go back to the original soldier and it worked just fine. I don't know why this worked for me but I'd guess it reset some .ini file or something similar!

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
You could try deleting your local profile files (not the soldier, just the files) in your my docs/battlefield 2142/profiles/x where x is the id of your soldier. When you load up again, the files will be recreated.

I went for the total wipe of the laptop and now going back thru the painful process of reloading everything!
I have my server still up and operational but I have been too busy on the COD4 servers.
Maybe sometime this weekend I'll pop into the TG 2142 server and show you all how to recon properly!

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
Maybe it could also be the latest drivers for your video, if it is still doing it after reinstalling all the drivers then I would try finding older drivers(ones you know should work) and delete/uninstall the latest and put the older ones back on.
I have an ATI card I can not update past 7.8 catalyst drivers due to the same thing with the game Oblivion. I get a crash either at startup, load, or after clicking on the menu.
I would almost put a bet on it that the problem is driver related though.

Re: Click on Audio in Options menu and crashes
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! After seeing so many people in the teamspeak lobby lately I've wanted to play this game but this very problem reared it's ugly head. After 3 hours of searching for solutions I came across this thread...
Who would've thought just creating a new soldier would fix the problem. Thanks again! Now I can play BF2142 on my new computer.
(as an aside, where are the bf2142 ea support forums? I found it kinda funny that when I searched "bf2142 tech support" in google it brought up the TG forums as its first link)
