reformatted, now game crashes
ugh.
i reformatted yesterday. reinstalled everything back to the way it was.. same drivers.. everything. i load up single (or multiplayer) and the game runs fine.. for a short while. after about 5-10 minutes.. i'll start getting periodic stutters with a screen flicker. they start out barely noticeable.. but start happening more often and are more intense. if i dont hurry up and exit the game at this point it will completely freeze up the computer. so i uninstalled the game completely and reinstalled it. same thing. figuring it was a problem with my windows install.. i reformatted my PC again. reinstalled everything and AGAIN the same thing. i'm about to give up.. i've been at this for hours. NOTHING is different about my hardware & drivers. i keep all my drivers stored on a backup drive for when i reformat. they are the exact same ones i had installed previous to this disaster. i've already ruled out overheating issues. it's just strange the game worked fine before.. and now it doesnt. |

But in the mean time, update your Video and Sound drivers, then run BF2142 again. If the problem persists, try running another High Performance game and see you get bad graphical problems. Report back!

Re: reformatted, now game crashes
this is strange.
loaded up unreal tournament 3, and it froze up the computer after about 5 minutes. though it didn't have the occasional micro stutter/screen flicker prior to it.. it froze up with a looping sound just like BF2142 does. i haven't patched UT3 yet though, just ran it right after install. all of my drivers are up to date, and i've got all the critical updates to windows. i'm stumped. gonna keep scouring the net. nothing else i can do. |

Re: reformatted, now game crashes
think i may have fixed it.
i just played through 3 single player matches of BF2142 without incident. before i could only get about 5 minutes into 1 match. i remembered about my paging file. i always set it up so that windows doesn't manage it and instead have it permanently set at the maximum. i forgot to do that after my reformats. so after setting min & max to 4096 everything seems fine. hopefully this cured it completely, as it was the only thing different about my system since the game last worked... and not just delayed the problem till after a much longer playtime. will report after a long night of playing. |

Aye man
Do me (and urself) a favor and download speed fan.... then play some games for 10 mins and tell me your temps, manytime your gfx card will be represented by "core1" or similar in the temp lists. 2nd. and this is just a bit of advice, unless your running a MASSIVE ammount of background applications will less than a gig of ram you shouldn't need a pagefile at 4gigs. I run a gig of ram and my pagefile never grows bigger than 500mb (700mb is about the max i've seen without video editing) even with bf2142 running and ts, yahoo, music and my network server apps. If your memory foot print is continuously that much larger, you may have some other issues. |

Re: reformatted, now game crashes
i've got 2gigs of ram. only reason i set up my pagefile to the maximum is i've got a big harddrive and the loss of 4gigs is just a pebble.
i started doing the pagefile thing a long time ago when i was heavily into advanced flight simulation, and it would prevent windows from resizing the pagefile as it needed while i was playing. anyway, i'll give your suggestion a try. |

Re: reformatted, now game crashes
according to speed fan temps:
idle my GFX card core is between 60-65C. after some time playing BF2142 its at 80C. my cpu core is listed around 40C idle and climbs up to 50C. p.s. my card is the nVidia 7950 GX2 (/w 1GB ram). it's basically two graphics cards slapped together and fits into one PCI-E slot. |

These symptoms are the definition of a classic overheat issue. 80C !!!! Too hot ! Maybe your PC case has airflow problems or needs more fans. Test: 1. Play the game with all PC case panels off. 2. Record the GPU temperatures in 5 mins increments 3. Post results See you.

Re: reformatted, now game crashes
Are you running an AMD X2 cpu perhaps? Did you install all the AMD cpu drivers if so? That caused the same problems for me.

Re: reformatted, now game crashes
I agree with Rasta, I think your running it too hot, I had the same problem when I used to be in a room above a garage and it would get really hot in the summer, I solved it by taking off my covers and putting a giant fan to blow through my system.
