Unhappy Ping/lag/latency problem

Didn't see a similar topic so...

My friend got the "deluxe" BF2142 edition, installed it etc.
In SP the game works fine, when he joins a server, his latency keeps growing from 50 to 80 to 260 to 680 to 1200+

His internet is 512 KB/s (mine is 512 also) and he doesn't have lag issues in World of Warcraft...
We've tried opening all of the ports the manual says to open, but, still the same.We also closed all background programs (antiviruses, firewall, internet related programs) but still...the same.

He isn't using a router, I think he's using lan connector (if that's what the term sounds).

Thanks ahead !

Re: Ping/lag/latency problem

Probably need more information on system specs to know for sure what the problem is...and WoW is less of a bandwidth and resource hog than BF2142 so they can't really be compared.

Without knowing more I would suggest turning everything in the video options to the lowest levels (excluding view distance), and reduce resolution to 800 x 600.

Well if he's using Vista, he may want to download Vista Anti-Lag >> http://www.codecase.de/index.php/download-val

If you are on Vista and you are using wireless, you will get a lag spike every 60 seconds. That is because every 60 seconds, Vista looks to see if there is a stronger wireless connection that it can connect to. If you had Windows XP you could shut down the Wireless Zero Configuration but it is integrated into Vista and can't be turned off without turning off your wireless connection. There is a program called Vista Anti Lag, val.exe, which you can run once your wireless is connected which stops Vista from polling for a new connection every 60 seconds.

Resolves connection problems on Windows Vista.

- And don't forget, http://www.tweakguides.com/BF2142_1.html!
Some of the tweaks there will greatly improve the games stability and speed!
Also, it depends how far he lives from the server...

Re: Ping/lag/latency problem

Well, this is an obvious one, but...
Make sure no other programs are running. I've noticed that even iTunes adds 30 ping.

Re: Ping/lag/latency problem

Okay , solved it -.- .
If anyone has the same problem, MAKE SURE you switch it on the "256kbps or better" and not the "T1 lan" setting -.O !

Thanks anyways guys
