Green Blotch
Hi
I have fall victim to green blotching. The graphics in the game will flutter green blotches almost completely impeding my view and will continue for a few minutes and then go away and the graphics are perfect. This happens once or twice after every map load. I am wondering what is wrong and what I can do to fix.
For those who are wondering I have all the required minimums memory, graphics card etc and my settings are set to low and still no help. This green blotching has occured ever since I switched from a tube monitor to a flat screen.
Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this or know what could be happeing
Thankyou

Re: Green Blotch
Not exactly sure what is causing this, but I have two ideas: heat or corrupt profile.
The second is easier to rule out and fix than the first, simply go into your "My Documents\Battlefield 2142\Profiles" folder and delete the one associated with the soldier you are using. When you rejoin a server, you'll have to go through the "Optimizing Shaders" process and remap any custom keys and controls you had in place.
Diagnosing and resolving heat related issues is a lot more involved and complex. Before even starting that process, can you list your hardware specs please? Include CPU, graphics card, RAM, and sound card plus anything else you deem important. Size of power supply would be nice too. Also, have you made an recent changes to the system? Upgrades, additions, etc?

Re: Green Blotch
Thx for the reply lorax74. I have a feeling it isn't the curropt file because I have tried numerous times, uninstalling the game and re-installing, both while keeping profiles intact and also deleting them. This issue arised when I bought a new flat screen monitor. When I was using a tube monitor it was fine but I never put 2 and 2 together when started using the new monitor. I am just so computer illiterate when it comes to diagnosing and fixing problems. I am at school right now so I don't have access to my specs but I will post them when I get home this afternoon.

Re: Green Blotch
Hmmm... I wonder if you have a funky refresh rate that the LCD is not happy with?

Re: Green Blotch
A few things to check.
Take a SS of the blotch. Does the blotch show up in the SS?
This rules out basic mechanical malfunction of the monitor or a loose or crappy cable.
If the green is still there, chances are something is wrong with your vid card.
I have found this page useful in diagnosing vid problems:

Re: Green Blotch
As for power supply, I have no idea what you are asking for. I don't have one of those uninterruptable power sources or anything. Just whatever the computer plugs into the power surge protector bar

Re: Green Blotch
OK so i just played on the server for about 5 min and I took some of the advice from the site listed and took the side cover off the computer see if overheating is a problem and noticed the most likely problem. The video cards fan didn;t turn on once. I don;t know if it needs to hit a certain temp or something before it comes on or if thats the problem but I;m wondering what you guys think. I also tried taking some screen shots to show you but when i went into the 2142 file in MY COMPUTER and looked in the screenshot file there was nothing?? Do i have to go somewhere else to view screenshots?

Re: Green Blotch
Unless they did something funky, my understanding was that the fan on your video card should always be moving when the computer is turned on.
I would double check the manufacture first in terms of a warranty, or look into a replacement soon, because if the fan failed that is bad.

Re: Green Blotch
Ok so after more investigation {I tried moving the fan on the graphics card manually} it seems to be siezed up. Now I would like some recommendations as to which graphics card to buy now seeing as the card is well outside of warranty. You guys have my specs and I will let you know I am also going to upgrade my ram as well.
I want a very good performance graphic card but i do not have the cash to go crazy so let me have it

Re: Green Blotch
do the simple stuff first. see if the fan is plugged in. sometimes the fan has a seperate power lead. perhaps when you switched monitors, you jiggled a wire somewhere and it lots its power. look for red and black wires coming from the fan and make sure they are plugged into something (usually on the card).
If money is super tight, then try getting a replacement fan.
the other thing is get a program to see if you can force the fan to go on. It may be that the fan only turns on when the temp reaches a certain point. if the temp sensor is busted, the fan wont go on. A program like ATITool or speedfan can force your fan to stay on rather than be operated on a temp sensor.
Lastly, try selling it on ebay with the fan disclaimor if you are going to upgrade. you may be able to get 20 bucks or so for it.

Re: Green Blotch
PCI, AGP, or PCI-E? Also DVI or VGA?
Translation for the less computer nerdy... What type of card slot does your motherboard support (PCI, AGP, or PCI-Express) and also what type of connection is you current video card?
Past that you said you have an LCD monitor, does that connect with a VGA connection or a DVI connection, or does it support both?
www.tomshardware.com is who I often look at for benchmarks on new parts. They also use 2142 as a benchmark for almost all their graphics cards. So it should give you a good idea of frame rates and what knot. Past that figure out your budget and try to get the best card you can.

Re: Green Blotch
Short bursts of compressed air on and around all of the fans and heatsinks including the fan on your video card. May want to do this outside and not inches from your face.

Re: Green Blotch
I have a house fan blowing directly on my graphics card and I haven;t had the problem while i was playing for a few hours so I;kk just stick with the fan till i get a new card. I am thinking the Geforce 8800 series. And I tried switcing the fan to always on but didn;t work and also checked the opower supply to the fan but i think its just siezed.
New card is always good and gives me a reason to pick up another gig of RAM while I;m at it :-}
