Thanks for the advice guys. I ended up removing the replacement, free anti-virus I had installed as well. It wasn't necessarily causing any problems, but I couldn't completely shut down it's AVguard mode when I was going to play a game, so it was using up quite a bit of resources in the background.
I guess my fears of not running some sort of program stem back to the days when EVERYONE in the house used the same PC, so all sorts of odd crap was happening to it, so I blocked every hole I could find in the thing with firewalls, AV, anti-spyware, etc.. Well, the kids have been using my old desktop for awhile, and my wife and oldest son both have their own laptops now, so my PC is basically mine, and <knock on wood> I really haven't had virus/spyware/etc. problems in a year or more. I do only download files from reliable sites I know, having been burnt in the past by iffy Flight Simulator sites.
