Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
I'm getting pretty aggravated. All of a sudden, over the last week, I'm getting random periods where my game freezes and I usually have to hard boot the PC. Or I'll be playing along, and the next thing I know I'm staring at the Windows desktop. I haven't changed anything in my 2142 install since installing the latest patch, but I installed that back when it was released. I'm running XP media center addition, and my latest updates were installed on Aug. 15th, so one of those could be a possible culprit.
I also noticed that there is a driver update available for my 8600GTS vid card, so I'm trying that.
Any other thoughts?|TG-55| Infantry Division - Captain

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
Think I figured it out. A few days ago I installed the free AVG anti-virus program. Discovered tonight while researching the problem that no matter what I did, I could not terminate it, so I figured maybe it was treating something in BF like a threat. So I un-installed it, and just played for 2 hours straight with no problems.

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
I have AVG as well, and for the past few days, whenever I fully join a game, I can't move my mouse at all, nor does the keyboard work.
Weird thing is that the game's still running, like I can see who kills who, and normal chat, and occasionally see a transport fly past my screen, which is just stuck on the map screen.
My mouse and keyboard work perfectly fine till that point. I can exit easily, just AltF4.
I didn't want to start a new topic, since this seemed similiar to what I'm having..

Yeah, I immediately installed Avira Antivir after removing the AVG program, and am not having any problems with it.

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
Its generally a bad idea to run any sort of av while gaming. Theres really no need for an av anyway, unless you're irresponsible. If you're the only one who uses your computer, I'd suggest getting rid of it.

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
I'm inclined to agree with mentholated. Antivirus software removes malicious software after it has infected your computer: it does not prevent infection. Hence, it's not necessary to run until your computer is actually infected. And, if you use a bit of common sense (don't click on unknown emails etc), you shouldn't ever need it.
I haven't used anti-virus software in well over a year. No problems at all. Every couple of months, I'll get paranoid by a slowdown and scan my computer completely, with anti-virus and anti-spyware and rootkit-detection software, but it always comes out clean. The trick is to spot when something looks out of place: when an email looks shady, a website too good to be true, a torrent with too many random links and exes etc.Fight!

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
Err, it has nothing to do with AVG now... Uninstalled it, and I still have the problem. :/

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
Nevermind. It's just affecting my main soldier. So now I'll just have to play as my newby Chascon. :[

If it only affects one soldier, I would delete the local cache for that profile and see if it fixes the issue.

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
Sorry McBarge, I'm siding with Zho on this

I don't run AV software on my PC, and when I download something it's from a reputable source. When I DO download something that makes me go "hmmm", I run it through the Trend Micro site first. I know there's an even better site out there than that, to run a couple quick files through, but if I've seen it once... I can't recall what it was.
Then I just run SuperAntiSpyware (better than the classic Spybot/AdAware combo by a longshot, now...) with it's resident protection... coupled to using Firefox and a few of it's add-ons. All in all, it's been a solid setup."But way back where I come from, we never mean to bother. We don't like to make our passions other peoples' concern." -Dar Williams

Re: Suddenly having lots of lockups and game dumps
Are you talking about VirusTotal http://www.virustotal.com/?
You can use that site to run a scan on a file through a number of commonly used antivirus and malware detection programs.
