What to do when BF2142 freezes
I was happily shooting at some guys tonight when the game just froze on me and some other people. I heard guys say they had to hard reboot to come back. I tried to explain over TS that you can get back to desktop without rebooting, but my english is not so good and I was not understood. What I'll explain here works for me all the time.
When BF freezes, windows is still running in the background but for some weird reason the video card is stuck on BF even when you alt-tab. This means that you can still use windows keyboard shortcuts to do whatever you want, but you won't see a thing while you're doing it. Here's what to do (see attached image to better understand):
1. CTRL-ALT-DEL - This brings up the "Windows Task Manager". The task manager has five tabs. Everytime you execute the task manager it will open on the same tab it was when you last closed it. For the trick to work it has to be either on the "Applications" tab or the "Processes" tab.
2. Hit the "B" key. This should highlight BF2142.exe in the process list.
3. Hit the "Delete" key. If you're in the "Applications" tab, it should instantly kill the BF2142 process and bring you right back to desktop, skip to step 5. If you're in the "Processes" tab, you should hear the standard windows beep sound. Windows is now asking you to confirm that you want to terminate the process. (See the "Task Manager Warning" window in the attached picture.)
4. Hit the "Enter" key. By default, the "Yes" option is highlighted. By hitting "Enter" you are confirming that you want to terminate the process. You should now be back to the desktop.
5. Restart the game and get back to business!
Note: This might not work if you are running other programs or processes that start with the letter B. Say you were running a program called "BATTLECHESS.exe", you might have stopped it instead of BF2142. You can repeat step 1 to 5 until BF2142 terminates.
I hope this can be helpful for some of you.Last edited by Gronigo; 10-05-2008 at 02:07 AM. Reason: Corrections

Re: What to do when BF2142 freezes
Thanks Gronigo, I'm sure this will help some people as I have met a lot of people that still believe to this day that rebooting is the only way to get out of a frozen application.
By the way if you succeed in opening your task manager and you have something else that starts with "B" you can always resort into your your arrows keys or just press "B" again and it should automatically go to the next process starting with that letter =pNote: This might not work if you are running other programs or processes that start with the letter B. Say you were running a program called "BATTLECHESS.exe", you might have stopped it instead of BF2142. You can repeat step 1 to 5 until BF2142 terminates.

Or even better, I found that doesn't always work as good as killing the ~e5001 process.. BF2142 stops instantly for me after that. No waiting around! Problem is I can't find the tilda key on my zboard, so would have to program that 1 in.
But very handy instructions when you cant see, nicely done!

Re: What to do when BF2142 freezes
now how do you end the ~e5001 process if you cant see your task manager. This is the biggest issue I have with bf2142. Its not that it crashes all of the time. THe issue I have is when it does crash, I generally cant alt tab out. I have tried the ctrl-alt-del; "b"; del; enter. I can hear that it has ended the program, but EAor DICEs crap programming wont let my system return to the desktop. I have tried the .bat file to insta-kill bf2142.exe, but this works about as often as the aforementioned ctrl-alt-del; b, way of killing the program
Seems more often than not, I have to hard reboot my machine and I really hate doing that|TG-IRR|

Re: What to do when BF2142 freezes
That's a nice easy way to do it, but a more surefire way is a script that someone wrote that kills the BF2142.exe process for sure. I don't know where exactly the script is but I think it's in one of the sticky threads.
