    Stupid Windows Update!

I used to have my Windows Update set to automatically download, install, etc. updates, but kept running into bad updates that would screw up my XP installation, so awhile back I changed it to only look for the updates, then notify me and I'd take care of downloading and installing them. All problems fixed, right?

Except the stupid thing only EVER goes and looks for updates when I'm playing a game. My PC was just running for about a week and a half straight where I really didn't use it because I was busy, camping, etc.. So last night for the first time since Oct. 5th, I jump on to play, and halfway through my session, 2142 starts running like crap. I grin and bear it for 2 rounds until I completely lock up and have to quit. Come to find out, Windows update had been searching for updates, and was sitting there waiting for me to address it's apparently higher priority task of downloading updates.

Is there an even better solution? I don't really want to go to manually searching for updates only, because I guarantee I'll forget and just never update Windows.

You answered your own question toward the end there. It sucks, but that's how I do it. It's not like you need to update Windows every time one becomes available, unless you look at a lot of porn or warez sites, open email from strangers, or do anything else that exposes you to the sorts of vulnerabilities they're patching. I usually run Windows Update once every couple months, get everything I need, then forget about it for a while. I've had this box for 4 years now and I have never had any security issues.

I set mine to Auto download and then to wait for instruction to install. That seem to work best for me.

That way I get all the priority updates fast, letting then download in the background. I can then run the install when it is best for me, like right before I shutdown for the night.

Seconded. Least offensive way to go. Best thing is, I check the packlist of what's being updated (uncheck windows 'genuine advantage tool' and let it install after I hit shutdown at night. Best way to handle unless you're on dial up.

That's the problem, though. Mine bogs down my game when it's looking for downloads apparently. Do you know if you can schedule the frequency and time of day it actually automatically goes looking for updates? Maybe mine is just set to look during my normal late night gaming time.

<edit> I'd just look myself right now if I were home, but I'm at the office and I can't do anything remotely "administrative-ish" on my office PC.
