Time to reformat: XP or Vista?

Hey guys, it's now time to reformat as I recieved my 1TB seagate barracuda today from tigerdirect - to be used for storage and will run a 320 barracuda for OS which used to be storage.

So my question is this, XP or Vista? I have access to both, but had avoided Vista in the past due to reports of crappy gaming experiences, etc, and specifically 2142. And now of course there has been much updates to Vista, and BF2142, and ATI drives right? So is Vista a safe bet, and worth running over XP?

I should explain basically what I am using it for: Gaming, mostly bf2142 and TF 2 / hl2 based games, video editing both fraps and digital camera video, and basically as a media center for tons of tv shows / movies etc.

    mobo: Asus P5B vanilla
    cpu: intel c2d E6300
    ram: 2GB ocz platinum @ 1066mhz
gpu: asus EAX1950pro (has been artifacting lately - a known issue with the 1950's)
    sound: x-fi fatal1ty edition

I know I meet vista's requirements without much issue, but will that be okay for gaming? Any issues with the above hardware known to you guys?

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences, or any advice on the topic you have.

Well if gaming is your main thing, stick with XP it will make life easier... Now if it was a choice between XP and Vista 64bit I would say Vista and add two gigs of ram to your box. The extra memory can't hurt and will offset the head aches you may get from time to time.

Don't get me wrong Vista is a decent OS. It has gotten a LOT of bad press, some true some junk. For your average person Vista is the way to go, however for gamers and for businesses I still recommend Xp.

I generally say Vista all the way, as that's what I've been using for the past year or so, and that's what I throw on all of my client builds, but since you have an X-Fi card, you may want to consider XP. Creative butchered the Vista X-Fi drivers, so unless you want poor EAX support for most older games, I'd roll XP.

Other than that, the hardware you have is solid. I can't see you having much of an issue with Vista. And as of SP1, performance is essentially on par with XP, +/- a few frames, depending on the game.

[If you do decide on Vista, disable UAC, it'll make a lot of a difference in usability]

Vista, mainly because games are being optimized for Vista for DX10+.

(This test was done on the same computer specifications)

...and this is WAY before service pack one and optimized drivers came to Vista. With SP1 and drivers being made specifically for Vista now the FPS of the games will be better than the experiment/picture above. The only thing that I would recommend is that you may want to get another 1g of RAM because Vista is a "heavier" OS and requires more RAM but that shouldn't cost you very much.

Additionally, another experiment done with the same computer specifications for both Operating Systems.

So really it's your choice. I personally would go for the OS that is current(Vista) and what the current games will be optimized for, and again you shut yourself out from DX10+ capabilities and Vista will just keep getting better as it's only at SP1, I'm sure there will be more.

I run Vista 64bit and 2142/TF2/CSS/HL works fine. Vista is the future and is really what you should install as a gamer. Soon the games are directx 10 only, 4gb minimum etc, then you will need Vista anyway.

I also have been on Vista 64 for nearly a year with no problems except the Creative Audio debacle. I like it just fine and mine set up has been exceptionally stable versus when I used XP (32-bit).

If you do a forum search - you'll find quite a bit of info here about Vista and gaming.. but it's come a long way since the in-depth trials were done.

Speaking of that Creative driver debacle, I got a SB X-Fi XtremeGamer sound card. Has Creative released "fixed" drivers or should wait a bit longer before I upgrade to Vista? Or is the issue with the new drivers not terribly bad? I've been thinking about reformatting my HD soon anyways and installing a tri-boot system. (Vista/XP/Ubuntu) but I'm wondering of the XP partition will be worth it or not.

I very much regret getting vista ultimate 64. Every single game i play crashes eventually with some bsod or another. Whether its a problem in the os, or a problem with video or sound drivers -- i dont really care, it ruins the whole purpose of the pc i built... to have fun playing games.

I am pretty sure it is fixed. But you might want to do some research first.

Your current graphics card (the 1950pro) is not DX10 capable so I would not recommend Vista just yet. Some of more tangible benefits of Vista are seen from a powerful computer that has 4gb or ram and a 512mb+ DX10 video card (from my experience).

I say keep XP for now.

First off thanks everyone for your help and advice, especially F4ll3n as you went all out with the graphs and comparisons - right on!

However due to exactly what Fl1pmode said above I am going to stick with XP for now. Down the road when I get a DX10 compatible gpu I will of course check out Vista, my neighbor is installing 64-bit right now so I'll see how he likes it too.

So now I just can't wait to get back into 2142 and see how it runs on a fresh install Hopefully in a few hours...

    Cheers

Re: Time to reformat: XP or Vista?

Okay another question now - have got XP installed and most drivers/etc and now am just about to install 2142.

Do you guys know if there is much if any difference installing games on a secondary HDD as opposed to on the same one as your OS?

See, my OS drive is 320GB, 120 partitioned for OS/etc, and now I have that nice big 200gb chunk which I was going to use for games. Alternatively I could throw 2142 on my new 1TB drive though that's mainly for data not apps, and I also have another 320 sitting around, which I could use for the games.

    Any tips or advice?

    Cheers

Okay, it doesn't matter if your games are on the same drive as your OS. Your OS is a running program and the only thing it affects is your RAM. The only thing on your HDD that would affect anything would be your read speed and your RPMs of the hard-drive. So look up the specs of your 2 HDD's and look up the read speed weather it be 1.5gb/sec or 3gb/sec and the RPMs which the most popular ones are 5400 or 7200 and the high-end gaming ones are 10,000+. I suspect that your smaller HDD will probably be your faster one though. Usually companies that make larger HDD's sacrifice speed for size.

Yeah that makes sense about the HDD's. Both of mine are seagate barraccuda and have the option for 3.0gb/s with a jumper and they are both 7200rpm. What you said about larger drives having longer read speeds makes sense too - think I'll just use the 1TB for video... With that much space I can practically fraps every round!

Yeah, the jumper is always a option. But also keep in mind that if you need to use the jumper trick to reach 3gb/sec it will reduce the life of that HDD.
