    Question PunkBuster Initialization??

    Hello, this is Cavall. Sorry if I've placed this in the wrong area. I've not been able to play 2142 for maybe a week an a half now because within three minutes of joining a server I get kicked with:

    "RESTRICTION: Service Communication Failure: PnkBstrB.exe initialization failed"

    ...flashing for a moment before I get the boot. This happens on every server I go to. Now I've looked around this FAQ and tried downloading the PBSetup and updating my files. It DID update something... but didn't solve the problem. Any help in this matter would be GREATLY appreciated... I'm going through withdrawls here...

    Good to see you here Cavall, you are a joy to play with.

    Usually this shows up as a firewall issue. Make sure that PnkBstrB and PnkBstrA are allowed. Try disabling the firewall to make sure it isn't the issue.

    I agree with Beat, this is probably a firewall restriction
    If you install a new game (any PB game) I think punkbuster B gets updated. It seems to me that PB 'B' operates across all PB games and has to be set again to allow with your firewall

    failing that goto www.evenbalance.com and use pbsetup to force an update of punkbuster files on your system

    Thanks for the tips, but neither seemed to do the job. After struggling with Norton Firewall for an hour or so I just turned off my firewall and tried to join the server but the same thing happened. I'm not totally sure I'm using the PBsetup correctly, but I'm selecting BF2142 then clicking "check for updates" and it says there are no available updates. Is there some other use of PBsetup that I'm missing? Any other ideas?

    Here is the link for pbsvc.exe. That should allow you to run a full reinstall.

    It appears that i am also having a PB issue. I have gone and updated my version of PB. That didn't work and i did a reinstall and that didn't fix it either. Just purchased 2142 and really want to get in a good run... longer then 2 mins haha.

    Which PB error message are you getting? Have you tried temporarily turning off any firewalls to see if it fixes the PB problem?

    Im not getting any errors, im just getting kicked by PB even then the server is only half full. the only firewall i have is Vistas, but i can try and turn of the firewall. Could my internet protect setting be too high and making PB unhappy?

    I am trying to run it on Vista 64, but i am running a dual boot system so maybe i will try and run it on xp 64 and see how that works. I sure hope this is a problem that will go away.

    I finally got it working by running 2142 on XP. Thank god i decided to go with a dual boot system. The only funny thing now is that i can't set my resolution as high on XP as I could on Vista. Oh well.

    Might be closer now. I re-installed PB I no longer have the pnkbstrB problem. Now it says

    "PS IMPORTANT COMMUNICATION FAILURE pnkbstrA.exe" though I think i'm missing a word or two. I'll try the firewall thing again with that and post back

    Try another reinstall maybe? I'm grasping at straws here but it seems you have the same issue just with pnkbsterA as opposed to B.

    I don't know... PnkbstrB wasn't 'initializing' or starting up, I think the comm error has more to do with file corruption. I'll try another reinstall I guess xD. Thanks for the suggestion.
