    Steam + 2142.

Since TF2, L4D and other large titles, many of us use the Steam program found at http://store.steampowered.com/. If you never used or heard of the program, it allows you to use many benifits as a gamer to make life easier. Keeps track of games you bought and keeps them up to date. It allows you to download games and install them without CDs. Great for reformats! It also allows you to keep track of your buddies and what games they are played much like xfire. It'll show their status, stats and who they are playing with.

Now Steam offers select titles, but you can add any program to your steam games tab and run them from there. Why would I want to do this? Well many don't know this, but you can access your buddy list and chat windows what in any fullscreen game including 2142! It's awesome as an admin because it allows anyone in-game to contact me and I can responde you much easier. Plus I dont miss the message since it waits for me unlike the annoying in-game chat. It'll also tell all your Steam buddies your playing 2142, BF2 or whatever you add. Heck, you can even add Hearts to the program and tell everyone your playing

Well, once in have Steam installed, goto your "My Games" tab. Then click add non-steam game. This'll scan your start menu for shortcutts of any program you have listed. Find what you want to add, check it and click add. If you like me and dont have 2142 in your start menu, click browse and find the main .exe (like: bf2142.exe). Once you found it, add it. Heres the kicker, if your shortcut have added exe code like "+widescreen 1" you'll need to readd this in Steam. Heres how you do it: right click on the game. Then click properties. Then in the "Target" field add the directory and code (like: "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Battlefield 2142\BF2142.exe" +menu 1 +widescreen 1).

Now as long as you start the game from Steam, you can enjoy the benifits of Steam while playing any non-steam game like BF2142. remember to use Shift+tab to access Steam while in-game!

Nice right up! Steam is actually a very useful client, even if I did disagree with it's original purpose. Unfortunately, I cannot get it to run on this computer for the life of me. The only remaining possibility I can think of that would cause it to not work on this setup is my antivirus, which I am not going to switch.

I do this sometimes. I would suggest you change the shift-tab keybind. I know I like to look at the scoreboard while sprinting, I do this automatically sometimes. Unfortunately you end up in steam and even after you exit 'W' doesn't work and I have to strafe first. This is just something to look out for. Also sometimes when I shift-tabbed to actually use steam the scoreboard would 'stick' on the screen. usually if I spammed the tab button it got rid of it or escape then escape again.

    Re: Steam + 2142.

A tip: rebind the Steam Overlay (shift and tab by default).

As to why, well if you sprint (shift) and take a cheeky peek at the scoreboard (tab) while playing 2142 you'll bring up the Steam Overlay and all forward motion is suspended. This results in panic and much keyboard mashing and 9/10 in death.

Of course if you are calm enough to simply repress shift+tab disregard this post.

NB I've been saying this about having the camera (c) and shield (x) about 2142 now for 2 years and I still haven't done it.

    Reminder to everyone.

Some people claim they can alt-tab a lot more reliably using this method. (Not for me though..)

Steam will not fix the Alt-Tab problems. Steam (like X-fire) has its own overlay that is by default invoked by pressing Shift-Tab. From there you can message other Steam users. A few of the BF Admins run our 2142 through Steam to enable the overlay.

Does anyone know if the ability to join a friend in game directly from the Steam client (i.e. direct link to the server they are playing on) applies to non-Valve games as well once the game is added?

FYI: ALT+TAB works fine if you run 2142 in window mode.

the join game option only works with some games (usually valve games) and does not work with 2142

It basically works with Source games (TF2, Counterstrike, L4D, etc)
