Re: In-Game Video settings
Yeah, good drivers are integral to a video card. Without good drivers a video card is worthless.

Re: In-Game Video settings
I used to have an 8800GT video card when I started out in TG. About 6 months ago, I bought a Radeon 4850 (Visiontek). Since then, my KDR went up dramatically. My KDR was at a pitifull 0.5+. To baseline my new KDR average, I started a new soldier (StrikeVector) to see what improvement I realized. All other factors being equal, my KDR baselines around 1.39 (not great, but respectable). I run anti-aliasing at x8 to enhance clarity (makes a difference when distinguishing a bush and infantry at over 100m). I used to suffer extreme FPS reduction during arties, but with this card I haven't noticed any halting. Even on Moving Titan maps, I have not experienced significant FPS reduction when Titans are within podding distance. Hope my experience with this card helps others consider upgrading their gaming experience. Now I just need to work on bettering my soldiering skills. Maybe, someday, I can grow up to be like The R.E.A.P.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Right now I'd say the ATI 4850 one of the most cost effective cards on the market. I picked up two of them when I built this computer, for a combined total of 300 dollars. (And that was about 5-6 months ago).
The only regret I have about getting 2 of them is that ATI hasn't gotten the crossfire support up to speed yet. I should be getting a lot better FPS with two of them (1 gb total between the two of them). However, some games have seen some massive FPS increases with multi GPU crossfire support. Farycry 2 and Crysis being two games which they can max out while maintaining respectable FPS even in the most taxing instances. However, the default scalings (for games that don't, by default, support multi gpu... like BF2142) is still being brought up to speed.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Update:
I noticed a lot of us are using the software texture filtering of this game. I looked into it, and the software filtering provided in the game design is very left (the AF that is).
Turn the in game texture filtering to low (since there is no off). Even at high, the game is only providing 4X AF. Catalyst Control Center provides up to 16X AF. That's a HUGE difference for ground textures. When I played with 2142 texture filter settings on low, and the control center manually set to 16X, the game was like a whole new game. The ground is clear into FOREVER. Walking over the concrete tiles on "fall of berlin" is FAR better quality then before.
Needless to say, I highly suggest everyone else with control center and ATI to try this. It is one of the biggest graphical increases I've managed to stumble upon in this game, ever.
EDIT: Don't forget to make sure that you turn off "use application settings" in the ATI control panel, because you don't want it to utilize the settings 2142 gives it.
PS: How is everyone's framerate when actually inside the orbital itself? I'm not talking about when you're looking at it from 30 meters away. I'm talking about when the shells are dropping on your head. If there is nothing but orbital particles all around me in every single possible direction, the FPS drops sometimes spikes to as low as 15 FPS... although it doesn't feel that low for some reason. In any case, I'm dead at that point anyway. (If I'm on the fringe of the orbital, and even still taking some damage, I'm at around 60-70 FPS).Last edited by Eudiphon; 01-25-2009 at 11:32 PM.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Wow! FRAPS does work! Better than renderer.Fps 1 as it's up in the top left side where in game text is located at. Found at low video settings the frame rate stayed in the 70's area whereas in Northern Strike it lags down in the 60-50fps range.

Re: In-Game Video settings
i use a 7800GTX 256MB with some "homemade" tweaks that allows me to reach a fair 65FPS average on all high

Re: In-Game Video settings
Just a heads up:
The edge-detect form of AA for the ATI 4800 cards does improve AA visuals.
However, it also takes more computational power to pull it off. So it might see somewhat of a performance hit.
It's not quite as high as putting the AA to 8x (in my opinion) but it is noticeable.
Besides, simulated 12X = better than normal 8x in my opinion.
