In-Game Video settings
Morning,
As with all FPS type games, it is all about the frames per second. However as this games ages and newer video cards arrive to market, I believe we have come to a point where we can have our pretty pictures and frames too.
I decided to check out one of my favorite online haunts for video tweaking[1] and came up with the following in-game video settings to try out:
Terrain = MED
Effects = MED
Geometry = HIGH
Texture = MED
Lighting = MED
Dynamic Shadows = LOW
Dynamic Light = LOW
AntiAliasing = OFF
Texture Filters = HIGH
View Distance = 100% ( would you have it any other way?
)
Bloom = OFF
So with curiosity killing the cat and satisfaction bringing him back ( or doing a refib on Catman ), I would like to know how to you setup your pretty pictures?

Re: In-Game Video settings
I try to squeeze out every bit of FPS...when that orbital or EMP hits it's nice to have plenty to spare. Also I turn off all my lights and shadows to make it easier to see people in dark area's.
Terrain = LOW
Effects = LOW
Geometry = HIGH
Texture = LOW
Lighting = LOW
Dynamic Shadows = OFF
Dynamic Light = OFF
AntiAliasing = OFF
Texture Filters = LOW
View Distance = 100%
Bloom = OFF

Re: In-Game Video settings
well for 2142
Terrain = HIGH
Effects = HIGH
Geometry = HIGH
Texture = HIGH
Lighting = HIGH
Dynamic Shadows = HIGH
Dynamic Light = HIGH
AntiAliasing = In-game set to off manually turned to 8x in the nvidia control panel
Texture Filters = HIGH
View Distance = 100%
Bloom = I'm guessing is on
Don't think I every go below 70 FPS (i.e. arty and EMP plus lots of other particles or if I'm recording something) with my 8800GT overclocked to 725MHz from the stock 600MHz, which also runs at a cool 56 C a peak temperature thanks to a sweet aftermarket cooler because the stock one got ruined by a 'friend'Reapator, overlord of ponies

AntiAliasing = In-game off 8x in Nvidia control panel

I got no problems maintaining a high fps during any encounters on my laptop (512 mb 8800M GTS).

No issues with maintaining fps even in orbitals or emp strikes with my ATI Radeon 4870 1 gb.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Ever since I had my 4870, I've maxed everything and have not once encountered slowdown. Not even during orbitals and EMP strikes.

I don't really have FPS issues with the game. I run 2 ATI 4850s (512 MB each) in Crossfire.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Well I thought I would share my experience with those settings. Average FPS was around 48. Considering I only have a GeForce 8600 GT, tis not bad.
Specterr, since the game does allow for it, can one even consider those settings illegal by TG standards? I always wondered if I should do the same.
I should also mention that when I did the changes ( in this case it was to downgrade them ), the frame rate didn't change much if any ....Imaging a real super kewl 21st signature here

Re: In-Game Video settings
I see no reason why you can't take them off if you want, removing them is part of the game design and needed for low end systems (like my old computer that I began playing BF2142 with), I just kept the same setting when I upgraded because I was familiar and comfortable with the look and feel at those settings.

Re: In-Game Video settings
For some reason the ingame 4X AA looks better for me than the 8X ATI Control Panel settings. Maybe I'm doing something wrong though?
Edit: For those of us that are using ATI, the ATI Control Center has different AA filters available. Under the AA section you can select the AA filter you want, the default being "box" filtering. If you have a 4800 series card or better, you get the advantage of edge-detect filtering, which greatly enhances AA ingame. 8X AA with the edge-detect filter becomes = 24X, without massive FPS drops. You can also use edge-detect with the "use application settings" box checked, and the edge-detect filter will enhance whatever ingame setting you have. 4X ingame becomes like 12X AA.Last edited by Eudiphon; 01-24-2009 at 02:41 AM.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Personally, I find the ingame anti-aliasing to be more effective that the forced AA that the control center tries to force onto the rendering. Edge-detect will work with the ingame settings, enhancing them as well. 4X ingame will be converted to 12X.
PS: The drivers for the ATI 4800 series are pretty lacking right now for some aspects--the cards are relatively new, so the drivers have to catch up. I suspect that everyone here should see further improvements as they drivers get better and better. For those that have been tracking the ATI driver logs, they've made some massive increases. In Farcry 2 alone they managed to increase FPS by 10-30% with their updates.

Re: In-Game Video settings
Only reason I use the Nvidia control panel AA is because my video drivers cause me to have a black screen everytime I get motion blur (orbital strikes, active camo). By keeping the ingame AA turned off, I don't experience the problem. And I don't want to roll back to older drivers because they perform poorly on some of the newer games I play.
